  • i heard 500 gigs have a high risk of crapping out is that true?

  • no...

  • Like he said, his system was a launch console. It may not be exactly like yours but it shouldn't be much different.

  • u forgot the blue screw

  • i was going to upgrade my playstations hardrive, but then i took an arrow to the knee..

  • You forgot the LBS! Little Blue Screw!

  • um.. oh boy! i saved a few complete full games on my ps3 games like LBP , dead nation , ratchet and clank quest for booty , DC universe , sonic the hidgehog 4 and MGS 4 database dose all that going to go to waste or can i get them all back in the new HDD when i do the restore?

  • @fareedbakhit you downloaded it through PSN, right?

If so, you should be able to re-download those games through your account once you'v switched harddrives.. They're are in you download list under account management.

  • @dgonza40 i've already upgraded my ps3 to a now HDD and and i never lost any full games or DLC :)

    but thanks anyway ^_^

  • great video,well--explained and easy!

  • does external need to be formatted to fat32?

  • He missed a screw haha

  • @darthsackboy lol

  • @darthsackboy Theres no such thing as a 50 tb external

  • cheap 60 bucks lol

  • i dont get why sony charges an extra 100 bucks for 160gb, i guess theres a sucker born everyday.

  • do u need a external hard drive

  • @IAmASmexyBeast they use internal like the ones they put in laptops/notebooks

  • mine goes in straight and does not have the metal thing

  • i miss roper on beyond.

  • Can the harddrive be straight out of the Box?

  • That's the phat system...is it just as easy to upgrade a slim system?

  • Hey guys I need some help, basically I know what to do and whatnot but the only problem is, is that I don't know where to find a hard drive. I know I need a SATA 2.5" 5400rpm but like I really don't care for ordering online, so i dunno where to get one like from a store. I think I'm going to go check out a Radioshack nearby today. But by all means if you know where to get one so I don't have to order online, do tell.

  • how do I download the update 3.66 to my flash drive

  • @shark2o10 Go to playstation website.

  • the back up disk has to be empty???? or all the other data in it will be deleted???

  • What about the firmware? Does it change or upgrade?

  • @Amerimokkka No, this doesn't change anything to the PS3 firware.

  • @MrStephen920 much obliged brother! Do the same rules apply for slim and fat? Isn't it true that some firmware is stored on the HDD with slim models?

  • @Amerimokkka To the best of my knowledge none of the firmware at all is stored on the HDD on the Original or the Fat model. And even if a small portion, for some odd reason is, if you do the backup utility that portion will be backed up. Besides, even if a small portion of the firmware is on the HDD, Sony should have made sure that the portion on the HDD is a useless part of the firmware. Enjoy your upgrade!

  • @Amerimokkka Actually I just checked, if your using a PS3 Slim model then what you need to do is get a small USB stick and put the latest software update on that drive. Plug the drive and the controller in when you first turn on the PS3 and follow the instructions. You can get the latest software by going onto Sony's PS website.

  • don't post hating comments people, he didn't ''screw up''...

  • i need some urgent help, ive done exactly as the video says including backing up, but when I switched the ps3 back on after the upgrade it said it needed to format the new drive but this took ages (around 30secs - 1 min per percent) then when it said it had formated sucessfully i pressed to restart the system (as instructed)

when my ps3 restarts the logo comes on then nothing, theres just the swishy line onscreen, no icons/menu

    please help

the hard drive is a wd 640gb 2.5 inch 5400 rpm

  • @Djbigkev69 I think you had the wrong kind of hdd. it has to be an Serial-ATA.

You have everything right, I can read, except that, I guess.

  • @4:39 he forgets the blue screw lol :p

  • How do you format the external hard drive?

  • How do you format the external hard drive?

  • 35Gig just aint cutting it anymore. Time to put in a 1TB drive!!!

  • Will a SSD fit in a PS3 or I mean WORK in a ps3

  • hei can i use a 250GB Sata 8MB CACHE Samsung HM250JI

  • @sharoz95 as long as it is: 2,5 inch, 9,5mm and sata, you should be able to use it ;p

  • if i'm using a flash drive to copy my saves what do i do about the copyrighted ones?

  • duuuude ur AWSOME!! :D thx soo much ^____^

  • Go on amazon and buy a hard drive

  • @SignalNeverFades so then what's the biggest hard drive that I can put on the ps3? Can I buy it anywhere like best buy?

  • @heavenlysword666 Biggest is 750 GB. I have a Hitachi 750 GB in my slim :).

  • @rendezvous65 i think the biggest is now 1tb but who knows

  • So then what's the biggest hard drive that I can put on it? N where can I get it? Thanx for the response

  • Can I put a 1TB hard drive on it? Does it have to be 5400rpm? What happens if it's a higher rpm?

  • @heavenlysword666 No you can't 1TB are too big and won't fit. The console is designed to run at 5400rpm so if you put a 7200rpm it will actually make it slower. Weird right? Anyways, thanks for the sub bro!

  • @SignalNeverFades

i have a question, i have (imation) external hard drive disk 500GB and i want to back the saves files to, i did the trophies analizing and it is finished, but there is a problem and it is telling me to (connect storage media at the save destination), WHAT TO DO ABOUT THAT PLEASE ?

  • @sadiq2008 That means select the HardDrive.

  • Comment removed

  • LOL @ the forget about the blue screw !! LOL LOL LOL !!!

  • LOL @ the forget about the blur screw !! LOL LOL LOL !!!

  • ok..i bought i new ps3 console...and i want to get my data from the old one back on the new one, ive made no back up data, and i want to update the old hard drive software to 3.56 , the latest, and i dunno how to update the old hard drive cuz the old ps3 is broken :(

    PLEAAASE HELP

    thank you

  • @NikerEkin If i'm not mistaken updates are stored on the NAND, thus changing hard rives won't change the update version. Just plug the 2.5 drive into your pc and copy the files over to the new one then plug it in. Should all work, probably best you read up about it though.

  • lol u forgot the blue screw

  • @kingofderpness FAIL

  • hey if i backup my ps3 that has 3.55 CFW to an external hdd and then restore it will it brick or update my ps3?? please helpp thanks

  • if u have games like Fallout for example that wont let u transfer it on to a usb drive will be backed up if u do the method he showed us?

  • @scott11133 if u downloaded it from the Playstation store u just have to re-download it

  • @gamefreak20065 no what i meant was that for example Fallout 3 doesnt let u transfer ur save data on a USB drive. so i was wondering if u do the backup data thing like he did that Fallout 3 will transfer over no problem

  • @scott11133 o, I believe it does

  • Hi..I Have One Question I Wanna Upgrande My PS3 Slim 120GB To 320 GB..I Want To Know If Is Goin To Work Fine ? Can You Tell Me ?

  • When you back it up on a external hard drive does it also back up your psn account or does that just stay on the system

(whoever Helps my I will subscribe to their channel)

  • @TripleKillGaming Your PSN login and stuff is saved on the PS3 itself.

  • I just upgraded my 60gb ps3 to a 500gb seagate but ended up with 40gb of extra data? 54/55 => 367/465 which should only be 411/465. Did anyone else have this problem?

  • lets say that my PS3 YLOD's and as long as its not a HDD failure, can I take my HDD from the YLOD'ed PS3 and put it in another one? the reason I ask is because I already upgraded my HDD to 500 GB and I would rather not Download everything again if something were to happen to my current PS3

  • ahhh i didn't know it was THAT easy to change. i've been dealing with my tiny 20gb this whole time...

  • is he looking at me or looking for me? X[)

  • where the hell can you get a hard drive

  • dose ur psn games get coped on to the extande harddrive

  • we all watched just to see him screw up (haha...screw)

  • Got a YLOD on my 20GB (replaced with 160GB after a week) PS3 and popped my old HDD in a new slim. You have to manually go to user files / saves etc and press triangle as you would with other options in the XMB and copy it separately to a device. I was able to use a smaller thumb drive hows he using a 1TB? Isn't it FAT only for PS3 to recognize it and if so isn't FAT limited to 40GBish?

  • @ftn725archangel No it is not limited because i got a 2TB drive for my fat ass ps3

  • @SR5127CL I meant the FAT file format

  • @amazing0187 any computer store

  • Video no longer accurate. Couldn't get it to reboot. I had to download a separate system update file and load it onto a flash drive. PS3 could then install the file from the flash drive, and then I could format the hard drive and load my backup data. Go to U.S. PlayStation site, go to the bottom of the page under "Support" choose "Knowledge Center." For the three drop down boxes choose "PS3 System" "Install & Setup" and "System Software Update." Then choose "Reinstalling the system software"

  • He Forgot to Say That The External Needs to Be Formated to Fat32

  • @PlasticineEffect109 Yeah, I'm actually doing this today and it was formatted to NSFT. And there wasn't the option to change it to FAT32 (only exFAT which didn't work) I proceeded to have a meltdown (since I payed so much for the thing) But a trip to the makers website gave me an installer to have FAT32 available. (The thing was, was that it did not appear as FAT32 but NSFT worked fine.) Very valuable lesson learned.

  • i bought two external HD and either worked what happened

  • what about the console-strict save files like lbp?

  • Why are all the users still there? Didn't happen on mine.

  • That was very helpful, thanks a lot! :)

  • what part with the holes is that holding the Hard drive

  • forgot to put the screw in there lol....4:36

  • @homeboy20012009 okayy man, have fun :D nd uhh, wut abt the blue screw?

  • @Intruder8231

I am kind of afraid to open mine. I have never replaced a hard drive, In any of my game consoles, my Ps3 cost $500 It has a 80gb. Sure It looks easy In this video, I don't wont my ps3 to be unplayable forever. And I don't trust anyone else, to replace It either. They might damage It.

  • @homeboy20012009 did yu see the video? it lookz really easy, nd jzt follow step by step nd yu'll be fine, dnt worry abt it

  • not a terrible how-to but he forgot the blue screw i know he got chewed up for that one

  • wat about de screw

  • Thanks mate, was great accept no mention that I had to download new system hardware onto the hard drive and also save it in specific files for it to work.

  • @BiohazardGA

    Some of them don't work.

  • @cayeyano24 -.-

  • cool dude dont lose that blue screw now

  • As other users have said before me, this is a terrible tutorial.

  • This was a terrible tutorial. He forgot to say the hard drive has to be max 5400 rpm and that the external harddrive must be in FAT32 format. Plus he forgot the fucking screw. Typical IGN.

  • you forgot the very important little blue screw... dont know about you but id rather there be no chance my drive will wiggle itself out if i decide to move my system.. just sayin

  • better and cheaper than xbox 360

  • he's got ProTools HD!

  • how come you connected the 1tb external drive? what format was it? fat32? need a reply

  • yes he forgot the little blue screw but it doesn't matter

  • thx i swapped it for a 2Tb hard drive

  • @FC2ClassyDestroyer are your trophies and ps3 trophy profile still there. I have like 8 GB left and was going to update too.

  • i got a external hard drive, but every time i go to back up, it says "connect storage media at save destination, what the fuck does this mean? its doin my head in!!!

  • @chchedda have you fixed it i have same problem

  • @sstrunks1234 yeah m8, you need a external hard drive that has the format fat32, hope this will help ya!

  • @chchedda Yep alredy done=D500gb now!!!!

  • @chchedda

do you have the FAT32 format on the external HDD for the transfer?

  • does the firmware have to be updated or will it be the same

  • thnx!!!

  • what speed of the hardrive do you reccomend ?

  • @Panoudimi dont go any higher than 540 rpm

  • What can I do if 2 of the tiny screws are stripped? I couldn't get the damn things out, and now they're stripped. Is there any way to remove them? Or can I buy a new harddrive enclosure for my ps3? Or am I just screwed?

  • Okay I changed the harddrive to a new one but I keep coming across some text no matter how many times it keeps restarting if it makes sense. What am I doing wrong you think?

  • hi sorry... quick question

wen i backup my files to an external, does the external have to empty?

  • another thing he says "before you do any of this you should go and sync your trophies just to make sure". sync your trophies? wha? how?

  • to anybody who knows about this and has done it, when he says "of course any game installs you had before or any downloaded games, youhave to do that part again" what does he mean exactly? if we purchased any DLC or games, do we have to PURCHASE them again or just download them??

  • @TANK1671 just go to playstation store then download list and you can re-download anything you have already purcheased :)

  • @MrJames6565 ok sweet thanks a bunch dude!

  • really nice tutorial indeed

  • how did you format your external drive to fat32 so your ps3 could read it? x_x i'm having problems with that...

  • @xihakuix You need to look for a software online. cause Vista/Windows 7 dont seem to format anything over then 32GB i think.

  • @xihakuix Get the program called "Partition Master 8". That'll do the trick.

  • @xihakuix there is a freeware program called fat32 formatter

  • @xihakuix there is a freeware program called fat32 formatter

it formats harddrive over 4gb to fat32 because windows wont

  • @Flyniecom thanks, i actually found partition wizard and used that. thanks for the help though:D

  • Does firmware version stay the same when you upgrade hdd?

  • @evildeadTim You have to download the latest firmware onto a a flash drive its on the sony website and it gives you instructions on how to do it.

  • can u put ur other hdd drive in a pc so u can use the ps3 system on pc?

  • so its a 2.5 SATA drive? or ATA?
