IMHO this was a rigged match. Jake was paid to lose the match. He could beat Sugar Ray at any time he wanted. Get to see the movie Raging Bull containing extra interwiews to Jake La Motta..
@Aniva66 robinson destroyed jake lammota with those body punches , to say tht jake lammota let the greatest fighter to wear boxing gloves win is jst an awfull lack of knowledge
@chrismck100 my knoledge is little, it's true...but i've got seeing the extras/interviews's J.LaMotta ...and he explains that match was 'rigged'. Jack already won Robinson time before that match. Would to have won again if he had not sold hiself (how in english? sorry my bad messy grammar) ...IMHO he was stronger than 'Robby' :))
@Aniva66 ok ...ray robinson had over 200 fights ,with 173 wins 108 by knockout and only lost 19 and was unbeaten at 1 point with a record of 85 wins no losses and 69 of those wins by ko,,also jake lamotta was the first person to beat suger in a close fight,, all there fights were close ...but to say tht a man with a record and video evidence to prove it was not stronger or as strong as jake is logical ...jake lamotta was trying to win, he had to lose alot of wieght the day before this fight .
How would post-war fighters have fared against boxers of today? We shall never know, but seeing Sugar Ray Robinson its definitely hard to judge, and I reckon Robinson for one could definitely look after himself. Lamota had the heart of a lion.
good stoppage by the referee. jake wouldnt go down and it was getting brutal and the ref made a good call, saved jake from raking a lot of punishing hits later on
Robinson was prob. the best ever. but give Jake some props no fighter could have taken those punches. sugar ray was speed and power-Lamotta was just overall tough...fought like a mini Marciano.what impresses me most is these guys endurance
If it wasn't for all his out of ring troubles I think Lamotta would've gone down as the greatest fighter of all time. Lamotta won their second two fights (although the score card said differently in one of them) and that was them in their prime. In his prime I think The Bronx Bull was unbeatable, but he just didn't have the longevity of the great Sugar Ray Robinson thanks to all his paranoia and self destruction. So sad.
@andrew587658 you could just see how gutted SRR was when he buckled his legs with that sweet hook lamotta took his soul by being able to absorb everything he had
No middleweight in history was better than Ray. The only fight he lost in his 20's was to LaMotta. Jake had a cement head and didn't fight pretty but when he was on he was an animal. No one but Robinson wanted to fight him. Give Jake props for beating the best ever WHEN he was the best ever.
@LiquidIndian911 i think greb could tie him for that number one spot also i think fittzsimmons is very underrated he beat heavys at 168pound they say no man under 200 pound hit harder than him id say for sure hes the number 1 welter tho leonard woodnt stand a chance neither wood hearns or any other welter
This is a 30-31 year old Robinson. God knows what he looked liked when he was in his mid 20's. As for fighters these days going against him, I can't think of a welterweight today who would really pose a problem for him. Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Kid Gavilan, Marvin Hagler, those are the guys who would give Robinson all he could handle. I'd still take Robinson at his best as the very best welterweight ever.
man some of you guys are crazy. stronger now a days hav you guys seen some of the knockouts robinson has, they are the most brutal punches ive ever seen. its just taht la motta was tough as nails with the fact that he fought bully which is basically im gonna get hit to hit you harder
Taking this argument to an extreme example, would you say that Jack Demsey would hold his own against Mike Tyson if they met? Or any two other fighters with 60 years of knowledge of training/technique/history between them? Those old boys were TOUGH AS no doubt about that, but lighter gloves aside, you really think Jim Jefferies could go 12 rounds with Ali at both of their respective primes? The principle is the same, but the variables have increased.
these old timers are overhyped- they are supposed to be better fighters for many reasons (probably mostly due nostalgia) but they don't look so technical- modern fighters will kill them.
they were powerful strong incredibly durable men they might not have been technically great but they were tougher than any fighter today how many fighta do you see that are toe to toe like this the whole way through? not many you obviously dont know much mate
im no expert dont get me wrong but ive been in the ring and fought and i know from my experiences that those old time guys were hard as nails im not saying that todays boxers arent but id rather fight a modern day boxer than 1 of these dudes any day of the week
dude, no one will ever know. they're all dead. they're tough and can reach 15 rounds. but that also means they fight differently to save energy for those 15 rounds.
so what is new in modern boxing? just new rules? and everything else is the same?
yeah thats true would be good to see mind. yeah rules have changed and technique its less dirty these days cuz to be fair a lot of them old style dudes were dirty as fuck
Not sure I agree with that. A modern fighter might out-point them over say 12 rounds but the old timers used to user thinner glover and go 3 or 4 times as many rounds. Tough guys I assure you.
Yeah definitely brawlers that done 15 3 minute rounds brawling. Wow you guys are really sensible I can tell. But you don't know shit about boxing. The only thing that changed in Boxing is it got softer! The gloves the length of fights and the Go to your corner at a knockdown. There are still different types of fighters less technical and more technical, tall fighters with bigger reach short fighter with harder hits. You can't make a general statement like that. That's ignorant.
i am not taking nothing away from these guys they where hard and it was tougher in those days. but fitness levels change world records do nothing but get broken as we advance as humans. look at the difference in strenth between body builders now and a mere 20 years ago. yet this fight was 60 odd years ago.... i respect your comment it was harder but the fact is these days we are stronger more skilled humans. science does not lie buddy
bullshit if anything ray robinson was getting paid not to bust up lamotta. Jake lamotta fought with shit defence
