my parents used to play his songs when we were very small in 1956 in philly, after we had moved here from glasgow, but my parents are from ireland... love his songs, such a treat to find music on here... thanks.
I like this song, it's not full of enuendo or fowl mouthed meanings It just tells of a guy and a girl who love their time together, It's a good song w/o vulgarities. Thank you for sharing it with us.
When I was a little girl we had an old Victrolla crank phonograph. This was the record player I listened to and this song was on one of the records. I would crank up the phonograph and listen to the music until the crank ran down then crank her up again, Another one of the songs I listened to was called "So I Took the Fifty Thousand Dollars." Have you ever heard this song? I would like to hear it again.
My parents house burned along with the phonograph.
The thing is if you have a Scottish grandfather and a father that remember Sir Harry Lauder"s comedy, musicality and love for Scotland then you can near say a bad word & that's at fact.
My grandpa tells me stories of when he was a kid about when he would wake up in the morning to go fishing and acrossed the lake a man would play this song everyday.
Ok...So, in the light of a new HOLLYWOOD blockbuster about the dissapearance of the Roman 9th legion in the Highlands....I'm trying to convince the Americans that this song is about just that "ROMAN in the glomin" I think they are buying it.
I picked up this record a couple of months ago from a antique shop in the States. What a great song this is. I love to listen to it. When I listen to this record I try to imagine myself back in 1911 and what it would be like to meet, see and hear such a gifted person like Sir Harry Lauder.
10psi, (Sorry for the delay in responding.) Thank you for the kind words-I'm pleased you enjoyed the recording. Sir Harry is one of those artists you either love or hate, I think, I happen to love his recordings too! He was a real gem! Thank you for "favoriting" it as well!
This is awesome, thank you Fuzzbear! The first 78 record I ever heard was this one. I bought it when I was 13 and paid 75 cents for it (I knew it was worth a lot more) Some nice old ladies were selling 78s at Old Washington State Park in AR. My little sister accidentally broke it a few years later, and I haven't heard the song again until today. I wonder if Sir Harry ever imagined people would listen to his music almost a hundred years after he wrote it?
ZephyrZorlon79, Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I doubt many of the early recording artists thought about the long term future of their records!
When I was a child my "Nana" had a player just like this and we used to sing this song together. Then she would play Danny Boy and would always cry. Yes, we are Scottish & proud lads 'n lassies! Thanks for the memory!
Gypsymom03, Thank you for sharing your memories with us. 'Danny Boy' brings a tear to my eye as well. My Nana had a little music box that played it. I'm so pleased you enjoyed it.
Scottish heritage meant that my folks spent nothin on nothin, so even in my young teenage years we didn't have a record player.
11 years of my piano study and their hillbilly radio was it for us. Yet I knew the words to most singalong tunes popular in the 50's because we did LOTS of that!
Anyone got Lauder's ROAD TO THE ISLES???
Please, please, please, post it.
All I can find is a 30 second sample.
My musician son's touring Scotland and I'd love to share a favourite with him.
How splendid. My grandfather gave me all of the old 78s from great grandpa Harry when I was a little boy. We listened to them all the time. Nowadays, I even have them in MP3 (how modern!). My wife, however, cannot bear to hear them at all - so I use headphones. It is lovely to find that other people are still enjoying Harry.
I'm from Newmains, but now I live in Madrid. I was letting my spanish husband listen to this taste of Scotland. I grew up with the Corries, Andy Stewart and Thingummyjig. The Alexander Brother were distant cousins of my mother (so she said) I just lived for New Years Eve. There's no place like Scotland.
Mharii33, I'm so pleased you enjoyed the clip and happy to hear it calls to mind fond memories! Thank you so much for sharing them with us. That's one of the things that make it worthwhile to make these little clips. Keep an eye out for more from Sir Harry in the future, lass. ;-) Not to mention some more vintage Spanish for your husband some day soon. (I've got a couple of Spanish Columbias up already.)
So glad I could listen to this! Found a 78 rpm His Masters Voice record with this song and "Nanny" on the reverse side. Also with original sleeve. As I don't have a recordplayer this was the only way to listen. Thanks a lot!! Really enjoyed it. Pieter
hey, im 21 and live in scotland, iv been brought up with music like this from my grandad. harry has a true scotsman about him. he also sounds like my grandad after a couple of drams lol. thanks for puttin a smile on my face
So nostalgic. My grandfather came to Scotland from Ireland (McVey) and his family settled in Dumbarton on the shipyards. He sang this song to us on the way to picnics by the side of Loch Lomond. Although I've found the Edison cylinder version of this on YT which includes the extra verse it doesn't detract from your posting as these are all rare. Thank you so much for posting this.
this is so great , my father would play and sing along when I was a little girl. The recordings were passed down to me and some of the records are very thick and are one sided.
Thanks for posting as it brings back memorys of my Father and Grandfather !

Get real people. This is laughable garbage. It may be rooted in some nationalistic or cultural significance but, trust me, this is tasteless, boring and talentless garbage.
Sir Harry Lauder is in my opinion, (and the opinion of many) one of the GREATEST entertainers of the 1st half of the 20th century!!! Laughable garbage is what is mostly produced in studios today...
Songs like this lower my blood pressure and reduce tension, it reminds me that life really is worth living despite all the turmoil in the world today!

SBD, Thanks! I actually haven't check the speed on that Victrola in over a year. It seems to have held pretty close. So many of these "acoustics" were recorded at different speeds, it makes it tough to find the right speed for a particular record. I usually default at 75, 78 or 80. Looking forward to seeing more from you!!!! Regards, J.

I am visiting Glasgow right now (on the banks of the Clyde River) and passed a pub called Lauders Bar. Don't know if this is a coincidence or not.

I have a different version of this on 10" 78 somewhere. I grew up with numbers by Harry Lauder in the 1970s, courtesy of my father's old records.
What can one say about dear ol' Harry? He's a legend!
