  • Well Done Linda and Emmylou Harris

  • Respect Miss Linda Ronstadt!

  • The 'fate' referred to is that this song was written about his (Jackson Browne's)girlfriend who comitted suicide, she was a dancer...

  • @jonnybellie Watch some other videos of this song, Jackson himself says this song is about a male friend of his who was a dancer who died too young.

  • @jonnybellie Please don't post something as fact if you haven't even bothered to verify it. It's been well-documented for nearly FORTY YEARS that this song was written about JB's friend, Scotty Runyon. (See QueenBeatlesWings' post below). The "girlfriend" you refer to was actually JB's wife, Phyllis Major, mother of his first son, Ethan. She had been an actress. There ARE some songs that JB has acknowledged writing about her--check out "Ready Or Not". As for the others--do your own homework.

  • This is horrible, Im sorry Too fast.. Go Jackson-

  • bit too up tempo for the meaning of the song to me...and I prefer it simpler - as if sung solo by the grave...

but worth having to compare with JB's and there is still space for a haunting slower solo acoustic version IMO...

    still love Emmylou and Linda.

  • Their majic together will never end. I listened to them years ago, my sis (who is now passed away) used to do their songs always!!! we had that blend... of course nearly not like Emmy and Linda.. but nevertheless.. love you both!

  • this song is for my sweetheart

    jackson may do it better

    but i like this

  • This is horrible

  • different styles for different people- but overall same words same meaning. Jackson's is more about the sadness of death while these ladies' celebrates life. both are good versions- just different.

  • This is one of my very favorite songs that Linda and Emmy perform together. I love

Jacksons verson also. This song is timeless. It really gets to the heart of the matter. Thanks for posting. I love it!!!!!

  • Linda turned this song into a celebration. I realy like this version a lot more than JBs which was melancholy.

  • @kaladist The song is about a male skater who died - it was meant to be sad.

  • @bh319644 actually, the song "For A Dancer" is about Scotty Runyon. He was a very talented friend of Jackson's who was killed in a fire in the fall of 1973. Dancing was just one of his many accomplishments. Jackson even attended the funeral just days before his son Ethan Zane Browne was born

  • @QueenBeatlesWings Can't rec your comment high enough or enough times. I'm so tired of people writing crap without bothering to look up the truth. (It ain't that hard, folks.) Thanks for setting the record straight.

  • This took my breath away. Forgot how much I loved Emmylou and Linda R.'s voices. This is epic Jackson Browne - played it at my daughter's funeral four years ago. I'd never heard this version.

  • Always loved this by Jackson Browne. Is this a tribute to Nicolette? I like her spin on it. Doesn't capture the sadness that JB put into it. But I understand the words better with Linda singing, smile. Until we have a better word our fate is death but while we are here there is so much good we can do. Throw some seeds of our own! Love that.

  • @duron5966 don't know about this cover, but I do know that Linda did a great tribute to Nicolette at the 1998 tribute concert. she sang '' blue bayou '', and it was amazing...........

  • @duron5966 the song "For A Dancer" is about Scotty Runyon. He was a very talented friend of Jackson's who was killed in a fire in the fall of 1973. Dancing was just one of his many accomplishments. Jackson even attended the funeral just days before his son Ethan Zane Browne was born. It's not about Nico.

  • beautiful.

  • Glad the ladies are doing this song cause the more people that hear Jackson's songs the more fans he will have, I tried but I just couldn't listen to the whole thing.

  • If you love really love music, nobody beats Jackson Browne.

  • Linda Ronstadt=what a voice. saw her in concert back in 1981 sounded like she needed no vocal enhancement for her studio work.

  • great job! let me know what you think of my linda ronstadt cover as well.

  • I love Linda and Emmylou's version of this song because it is the first I had heard, then, I checked out Jackson's and found it to be very compelling. It's a great song that has so much for everyone.

  • Online sources render the "fate" line as "no matter what fates chooses to play."

  • great song greater singers, love la LINDA!!!

  • What's the "fate" line in this version? I can't quite get it, but I love the version. It seems so deeply personal to Jackson, and yet these ladies more than do it justice. (I ought to have known, considering it's Emmylou, but this song is as near as it gets to sacred to me, so I'm protective over it.)

  • I hear "Throws In Your Way"- Jackson version says-Chooses to play.

  • no matter what fate has to do - there's nothing you can do about it anyway

  • The lyrics inside the CD says "no matter what fate throws in your way" but it sounds to me like Linda is singing "no matter what is all through your way" both here and on the recording...

  • @ShadySidebury Well said. I like the idea of being protective of great songs, usually against covors that somehow don't seem to convey the original meaning. This seems to me to be just a bit too fast.

On the other hand, covers needs to be more than straight copies, so it's a fine line to walk. At least they have the judgment to recognize a great song, as they also do on Springsteen's, "Across the Border."

  • My eyes aren't that good anymore but to my eyes it looks like the 2 guitarists are GE Smith and Bernie Leadon. I am probably wrong though.

  • Great Jackson Browne song. Wonderful to hear this version.

  • Wows! G this is fantastic. Goes straight to my fav's. 5*

  • Hi G

This is fanatastic, slight glitch at 2.12 was it on original, thanks for posting.

    Ally.
