Anytime there's a leak or a loss of pressure, Alyeska can localize the problem and shut down oil flow. There was a much bigger problem in 1986. The Steele Creek incident. Someone planted C4 on the line, and blew up a small section. Same amount spilled, because they knew about it as soon as it happened. Pretty much the same drill as what happened in 2001. How about instead of sounding like a bunch of uneducated ignoramuses, you keep your mouths shut and let people like me and my dad do our job.

The only reason he was able to cause a hole in the line was because he hit it right on a weld. Oh, to the person who wanted to go up and down the line and put explosives all over it, good luck. My dad was on this repair job. You have no idea how the pipeline actually works. I've worked on the mainline pipe. There's dents from hundreds of people shooting the line. It's 1 1/4" thick mainline pipe surrounded by insulation and jacketing. Within minutes Alyeska realized there was a leak and shut down the pipeline. No wildlife was killed, and the hole was repaired as soon as was humanly possible.

Yes I do. Not only cars and heating use it, but plastics are made from oil, and just think of how many plastics we use. Perhaps I should have stated drastically reduce our reliance on oil. Although, we will run out eventually, which will stop our reliance on oil immediately.

will we? they keep finding more, it seems to be developing in the ground. however i agree we need to find alternative sources for our plastics. i know they have made some success in that area. i think however that too many focus on the negitive of oil and say we should stop using it instead of finding more efficient &enviromently friendly ways of using it sorry it took so long to respond

It is not developing in the ground quickly. It takes hundreds of years to make oil. Coal and diamonds are made by a similar process, so just think how long it takes to make them. Scientists estimate we will use all the oil left in the world in the next twenty years, though honestly I'm not sure if this estimation is based on level usage or an increase in usage. Either way, they figure since we started using oil, we have used half of what the world contains.

there are huge oil resivours that we cant yet tap, and many we haven't found yet but i think at the rate improving efficiency were going to slow comsumption some. plus many of those estimates are badly biased.
