Emily skinner at least gives a reasonable Ursula here. Although she doesn't go with the more diva intelligent role that Pat Carrol put in the part that may be for the best. Scott put that in her role and look at where that got her, sheesh! Skinner takes the song into insanity mode here and it surprisingly works to a better extent.
she is much better than sherri renee scott. I like scott, but damn, she is terrible in the broadway show. i think she fit 6 accents, 7 different interpretations in one song.
i think my biggest problem is they went with a more comedic and younger ursula, and its almost like they tried to give her sex appeal, there were too many jokes and none of the actresses were dramatic enough, i mean in the movie ursula is so over the top in her actions, and she seemed to put the right amount of stress on each word
@SuppScott The switch from Ursula being a heavy, husky, alto that Emily Skinner portrayed perfectly to Scott's thin frame, shrill voice, and lackadaisical performance. there's hardly a part for talented full women as is and this should've been one. Complete idiots whoever made the lyric and character changes. The show had a long run guarranteed all they had to do was not mess it up with awful casting and stupid plot changes.
@TBon3Supl3x Preach, Preach Preach. I couldn't believe when I heard of ALL the changes to this classic show, I mean WTH did they think got the movie such fame in the first place??? And then to change the villain, such an iconic villain at from a full figured woman to a thin, frail with complete vocal changes was just unsettling. I wonder what Pat (the original Ursala) would think if she saw the show...most likely that it deserved to get shut down!
@QTipbandit Pat actually DID see the show... she attended opening night. While Jodi Benson said she liked Sierra's portrayl of Ariel, Pat didn't say anything about Sherie. What does that tell you?
@frymahhide1982 Well it should definitely tell the casting department something! hahaha. I don't even blame Sherie, i mean in all respect who wouldn't want to play Ursala and get to sing this fantastic song???Its the casting who should be ashamed, i mean Sherie is a good singer, but not for this role, plus her portrayal was more "cartoon" then the actual Disney version which was a cartoon so...I wonder what Pat thought of others portrayals.
@frymahhide1982 Actually, Pat caroll really liked Sheries rendition of ursula. In the Opening night video she was interviewed and I quote " And Sherie Rene Scott, Bang on, Bang on job!" that is all she said about Sherie's ursula.
Personally, I love the version of Ursula Sherie created...I never liked Ursula's portrayal as an ugly, manly woman who turned to evil kinda because she was outcast. That's the sense the movie Ursula gives me.
Sherie's Ursula is a comical beautiful villainess...she's full of ambition and a thirst for power and a want to acquire what she feels is hers. I just loved how the character changed, because I felt it was done poorly in the original movie. And this sounds a lot like the movie version...
no way Sherie changed it too much it, the movie is still the best version it was the same with Sebastian they changed him from a bass to a tenor and it just wasn't right for the character, but Sierra was AMAZING as Ariel and I like that they made her more soprano than mezzo
Sherie's Ursula was watered-down, nothing more than a middle-aged ingenue with thin belts and an overacted caricature of Ursula that did not overcome what she lacked physically & vocally. Ursula was never supposed to be beautiful, the movie's Ursula was a breath-taking release from the stereotypical female villain. Emily Skinner physically and vocally embodied it perfectly. B'way pussed out and in return they got the shortest run of a Disney Musical on Bway by several years. Serves them right
i looked up the shortest run for disney broadway show
TLM hasnt yet hit the two year mark (and wont, thanks to its August 30 closing night), this makes it the second shortest running Disney musical so far. Tarzan comes in at the shortest run (and rightfully so) at only fifteen months.
reading your comment just made me wonder which was the shortest show
I like this a lot better than the cast recording version, but I still don't get why they felt the need to raise the song up an octave. What was wrong with the lower toned version from the movie?
I love this script better than the Broadway one. I'm not sure why.

She's very good, really. But in my opinion she breathes to loud and to often. I hate that. :D

Emily Skinner is amazing! The only Ursula that counts after Pat Carroll. She makes Sherri Renee Scott sound puny.
