I swear, sometimes i think he sounds like a scatman. Just listen to the beginning of this video! Anyways, i think give ya a 5 out of 5 comrade, because ya bring such good ol` memories back to people. Keep them up!
They were all done in B&W originally. In the 1980s, Turner bought the whole lot and shipped them off to Korea to be "colorized". Unfortunately, they cheaped out on the process, coloring only 1 frame in 12 instead of the original 1 in 24. Thats why the color ones look so jumpy.
Truly thrilling animation pieced together at breakneck speed. Pace increases as the toon progresses. Note the intricate activity of all moving objects in the stop/go policeman scene. Disney and Lantz popularized anination, but Paramount was the legit creator of the animated story.
I doubt all the mumbled stuff they say is actually scripted, which makes this so much better then cartoons nowadays which demand lip syncing and all that rubbish.
You're right. It wasn't scripted. A few lines were, but a lot of that was just made up on the spot, which is why Popeye's mouth isn't moving half the time.
That was unusual even at the time, though. Everyone else did it the other way around---dialogue recorded first, then animation done to sync up to it.
The backwards-sound process and constant adlibbing are one of the things that give Fleischer cartoons that weird, dreamlike quality they have.
Her voice is so sweet! I feel so "sad" because the children today grow up watching cartoons with so much violence and emptiness and without this innocence! Long life to the spinach!
I just watched this episode this morning on Netflix and it had me tripping out.

something I've never understood, were these cartoons done in color and transferred in black and white, or were they painted in black and white?

This is the last "Popeye"Fleischer Movie
cartoon to feature Ms.Questel doing "Olive's"

Mr.Mercer is also the voice of the rink attendent.

there's a couple more done in the early 40s.
after that it moved to Famous Studios, where the cartoons would loose lot of their fun.

The black & white Popeyes were always the funniest -- especially those one-liners in small talk!!!

The cast always sounds like they really had a blast making these classics.
