I am still finding it really difficult! I find it hard to relax my finger joints and keep moving in the sideways direction described here, this is gonna take a while...
Lol the fingering for me is mehh but i cant seem to keep up with a straight sound, the horse hair bounces off the violin strings. Lol im a noob at the moment but i noticed my left arm gets tired after trying to play. Well practice makes perfect.

OH THANK YOU!! finally someone who doesn't tell me to pull my fingers up and down. When i tried to "break" them back and forward, it just felt like beaking every bone in my fingertips and i just felt terrible for making my violin full of bad sounds.
Been playing classical violin for over 10 years , and found your video has taught me a better , more effecient wayt of playing vibrato - thank god for violinists like you!
Playing classical for over 10 years , and found your video has corrected a decade of bad vibrato for me - if only we all had teachers like you. thankyou !
That's actually how I learned after some time trying just finger oscillations. I consider this an old school approach to vibrato, and it works. I also consider it a top-down approach to vibrato, whereas one can fine tune amplitude and speed 'after' they get the basic motion.
this is enlightening!! Jeez...I've been teaching myself violin but I can't get over with vibrato technique...It's my pain in the ass. But this is good. Heheheh
Oh don't worry, you'll get there. Vibrato is notoriously hard to learn and it takes time to make it sound good, sometimes years. I've been playing for years and I still don't have it quite right yet. Just don't give up, we all have a virtuoso in us waiting to play =)
@kyosato27 no not really. with vibrato on guitar you are RAISING the pitch as you bend the string SIDE to SIDE.
with violin you are not bending the string, and you are lowering the pitch by rolling from the tip of your finger, down the length of your finger - and returning to the original pitch by rolling back to the tip of your finger (instead of raising, and returning to the original pitch with the guitar.) this is done along the length of the violin string, unlike the side2side w/ Guitar
@kyosato27 In my opinion, definitly not. I have a friend who plays guitar, and I tried doing vibrato on his instrument, but couldn't with my technique. Neither could he when he tried my instrument.
Yes & no! Yes: Your ears might be more sensitive to the intonations & you can read the staff. No: Unlike guitar, Finger position on violin is hard to judge & if your finger moved 5mm over, you might hit a different note. Learn to play violin is easy but to get the right note that's one of the hardest. But practise does make perfect. I suggest you try it.
@PaulRamos1993 not at all. I picked up violin and have played guitar for 10 years. totally different instruments, and employ completely different techniques. although i guess fretting on a guitar for a while will just be a minor thing accomplished on violin - your biggest problem would be intonation by far... bowing technique as well is important
BUT... I'm enjoying it, I was in a rut w/ guitar for a while- and learning something new/challenging is refreshing to say the least :)

I find it difficult to keep the violin still while I'm using vibrato. I suppose it's because I apply too little pressure on the chin rest ?

Apreciate an answer, thank you.
