@fuckamericanidiot what do you mean by "samey"? every song sounds the same to you? they're all pretty different. would you describe a song like "music for 18 musicians" as samey too?
@rhymeswithgabriel what do you want from me? the first few times i heard it i loved it then i heard it with a lot of bass and they ran into each other, and yes, they mostly sound the same to me. cosmogramma and 1983 i like though
Good review. You mention that those unfamiliar with Flylo should check out Los Angeles, but I would have to disagree. I think they should start with his first LP: 1983. None of his albums are necessarily "better" than any other one, but I think that in order to understand his newer stuff a person needs to hear his progression from the start. It would be the equivalent of starting a movie from the beginning as opposed to jumping in half-way through.
I can't believe you would rate this album higher than Teebs' "Ardour." This music is embarrassing to the down-tempo beat music Flylo helped create. It seems like he's selling out to the crappy alternative music, just to get the approval of the Thom Yorke electro-hipsters. Save yourself the time and go listen to Flylo's "Los Angeles" instead.
@phadamblab You speak of these "Thom Yorke electro-hipsters" yet come off as an arrogant asshole yourself. You have self-imposed delusional ideas about what Flying Lotus is supposed to be; A selfish idea that he's only supposed to make down-tempo beat music, the kind that YOU prefer. I hate to break it to you but that's called the progression of an artist. He's not selling out to anyone, he's making the music that HE wants to create, not catering to your specific tastes.
@JungleMoth Most importantly, let me start off by saying that I used no expletives in my comment, nor did I single anyone out (besides possibly Thom Yorke). So unless you are Thom Yorke, or are unnecessarily offended because you are in the "electro-hipster" demographic I spoke of, then there is really no need to retort by calling me an "arrogant asshole." A little harsh, don't you think? Second, I can see from your comments that you recommend listening to Flylo's "1983" album as well as...
@JungleMoth "Los Angeles" album, and I can safely assume because of this that you've been following Flylo's work. What I mean by "selling out" is that he has seemingly degenerated into a genre that has already been exhausted for the last five years; extremely on-beat, high tempo, electronic music that appeals to both ravers and fans of Thom Yorke. While it is a valid genre in it's own right, I would have to argue that the progression from "1983" to the "Reset - EP" and even to "Los Angeles" was
@JungleMoth MUCH more significant than his movement to "Cosmogramma" and especially this EP. In fact, I would argue that his work on these last two works was more of a digression than anything. He was moving more forward and forward in a genre that he had himself created, exploring the mix of organic sounds with antisymmetric tempos and creative samples. Then he went back to completely simple electronic alternative. Which is understandable. If he wants to get more rave gigs, and ultimately make
@JungleMoth more cash, then this was the right route to follow. In addition, if he wants to actually sell his albums (and not just have them downloaded by hip-hop heads), then he should make music that earns the Thom Yorke stamp of approval; I'm sure the Radiohead demographic is much more apt to actually pay for their music (which is completely admirable). The point is, it's not just what I prefer, it is what he had created and was expanding on, and it was music no one had truly heard yet.
@JungleMoth Then he went backwards just to pick up more fans. I am truly sorry if I offended you personally with my aggravation, I just think it's sort of sad when a weak EP like this is given a higher rating by someone I trust than the work of Teebs, which I feel is much more creative, unique, and innovative (though not COMPLETELY original, I understand). I also don't feel that an artist should cater to my specific tastes, you're right. But would you not say that him making digressive
@JungleMoth else makes consistently amazing and ingenious. Stevie Wonder is my personal musical hero, but "I Just Called To Say I Love You" is one of the crappiest songs of all time. The two opinions can effortlessly coexist. In essence, just because I don't want to blindly (or rather, "deafly") accept anything an artist puts out as "great" doesn't make me an "arrogant asshole," it just means that yes, I do have specific tastes. But I'd rather had specific tastes than no taste for myself at all.
@JungleMoth Just to recap, I am not implying that you have no taste. Someone who recommends "1983" and "Los Angeles" to others has my musical respect. Sorry for the disagreement, and I'm sorry you took such offense to my comment
@phadamblab My apologies, I wasn't trying to imply that you were an arrogant asshole, just that your comment had come off that way. I understand entirely what you are saying, but in the end these are your perceptions of Flying Lotus' work. I would highly suggest typing in "Flying Lotus interview" and watching the second and third videos. He specifically discusses why he made certain shifts in his music, and judging from what he says I highly doubt he did it just to get rave gigs.
Satelliiiitteeee is definetly his most accomplished and mature track, although not quite his best, i think that would be a throw up between "Breathe Something/Stellar Star", "RobertaFlack" or "Massage Situation".

WOOT, GOT THIS TODAY!!!!!one of my favourites all year!!!
argh i just can't say i have a fav flylo song, its just impossible
but i do think that camera day on pattern (track 6) is one of my absolutely loved ones, also camel, GNG BNG and parasian goldfish on LA and tracks 1, 2, 9, 10 and 11 on cosmogramma
and may i just say that the video for 'MmmHmm' (the single that features thundercat) is one of the greatest videos of all time for me personally, well, it ties with aphex twin windowlicker.....
you should review more hip-hop! Try "The Q4 - Sound Surroundings" aside from "Cosmogramma" and "Emancipator - Safe in the Steep Cliffs" it's probably one of my favorites this year.
@Sektion9 Hell yeah I forgot to mention that one - Aunties lock/infinitum is one of the best, I love how the it has the same tune Big Ben uses when it strikes on the hour. Must have something to do with the infinitum thing - time being infinite and all? Yeah I wish that track was longer :D
Easily Breath . Something / Stellar Star, sounds like something you could only expect from Dave Tipper, this EP makes me wonder if Flying Lotus, like many a great musician has done too many drugs, the names of the songs and their general feel are almost manic.. Anyone feeling this too?
Probably GNG BNG + Spicy Sammich. Which are actually quite similar actually...
And Cosmogramma does not suck! :P On the first listen I thought it was crap but once it sinks in its amazing. Could probably be condensed a bit thought ot just clock catcher, nose art, zodiac shit, computer face//pure being, ...and the world laughs, do the astral plane, table tennis and galaxy in janaki
@Dgonra I'd have to say Auntie's Lock/Infinitum (feat. Laura Darlington). Such a unique and soothing piece of music. I can listen to it on repeat for hours.
I'm a huuuuge FlyLo fan, but this EP is the most underwhelming Warp release I've heard in a long time. I loved the first two tracks and Cosmogramma is one of my favorites of the year, but the majority of this release is just too sketchy--it's very apparent why these tracks weren't released on an album, to be honest. I don't know, it feels pretty amateur.
Anthony, I'm glad you reviewed this one man cause I love flylo!!! I thought you might not since it's just an EP. I found out about it on Wikipedia of all places. I was just sort of surfin the wiki on the day it came out and saw, "Oh flylo has a new EP out, shit how'd I miss that. When did it come out? oh today." Downloaded that shit immediately. Also, did anyone pick up almost a Crystal Castle vibe from "Kill your co-workers"? Must be the 8-bit.
@theneedledrop of course i will. i was definitely kidding. good review sir. i haven't listened to it but knowing flylo, its probably great. also, you should definitely review the Japandroids No Singles comp. I'll put it in the modbox right now.
I saw you listening to this last night and was all "WHAT IS THIS?!". Then my friends told me there was a new flylo today. And then I saw this in my subscriptions. SMALL WORLD EH?
its hard to pick a favorite flying lotus song as theyre all so short and usually kind of meld together.. ive never really payed attention to the track names either.
anthony, a few things. 1. favorite flylo songs have to be: camel, gng bng, do the astral plane, massage situation, and tea leaf dancers. 2. how is this like dilla donuts? 3. have you ever thought about talking about dilla donuts or anything else that is your favorite from before you were reviewing? just taking 5 records at a time from your collection and talking about them and not necessarily reviewing them. it could be a new weekly/monthly segment.
@stewyjmu I didn't say it's like Donuts. I said it's as interesting to listen to. "Classic" or favorite album reviews are coming in the future, fo sho.
@theneedledrop excited about the classic/favorite albums. i disagree with your donuts comment though just because i don't think many things are as interesting to listen to as donuts period. i liked grid+pattern world, but it was more like cosmagramma lite than anything. just my opinion (and just yours too). have you listened to flylo's Reset EP?
I think the sentence "It's just an EP" is going to become more and more illogical in the coming years (months?). There is less a reason to put out full albums at a time when less people are actually buying these objects.
FlyLo could easily release a slow stream of excellent songs, say 15 minutes worth of music every few months, and I would lap it all up, whatever form it comes in.
@xTheOxx but the album is an artform in itself. I don't think albums are ever going to become irrelevant or play second fiddle to the EP. Its about the holistic experience. Sometimes a musician wants to paint a big picture and an EP is just too small a canvas to work on.
Totally agree. I didn't mean to dismiss the album, I only meant that EPs will soon become as legitimate an output method and won't be referred to as "just an EP". That's just my vision of the near future.

anthony, a few things. 1. favorite flylo songs have to be: camel, gng bng, do the astral plane, massage situation, and tea leaf dancers. 2. how is this like dilla donuts? 3. have you ever thought about talking about dilla donuts or anything else that is your favorite from before you were reviewing? just taking 5 records at a time from your collection and talking about them and not necessarily reviewing them. it could be a new weekly/monthly segment.

@theneedledrop do it. I'd love to see what are your favourite records of all time.

@stewyjmu I think he did a Donuts review on his other channel, the one where people donate and he reviews what they want.

@Jerdna3
Totally agree. I didn't mean to dismiss the album, I only meant that EPs will soon become as legitimate an output method and won't be referred to as "just an EP". That's just my vision of the near future.

Favourite track has to be 'TIME VAMPIRES', loving the EP in general.
