I just trimmed all of my rabbits' (3) nails this week- I came out with battle scars. One vet told me to make a "bunny burrito". Basically, if your rabbit won't hold still, or kicks and hates being held, wrap the bunny in a stiff towel or blanket, and do the nails that way. I only suggest doing this if your rabbits are really tough, because they tend to breathe harder and that always scares me. I usually use this tactic ONLY for back nails.
I have on bunny that nips, and one who makes nests in your laps when you make her sit on you for long periods. What I do is I put them on their backs. Most rabbits go into an almost trance. It's great for trimming crazy rabbits nails.
I don't know if this helps, but sometimes if you can keep your pet's head turned the opposite way, so they don't see what you're doing, it might be a little easier.
once my mom decided to trim Lola's nails , but as she trimmed a little she started bleeding ): the poor bunny didn't react at all , but my mom had to desinfect her ):
Hi!Can i ask something?I got a bunnie and i want to cut his nails but they are very strong and i can't cut them with that!can you please tell me what to do?I know a way to do that but i am not sure and i don't wanna hurt my little love! =3
@xgdbeezy I watched one video about caring for rabbits, when your rabbit have a dark nail,, use flash light and aim it to the nails, so that you can see the part that you should cut!! Hope I helped!!
My rabbit bolt was in our house fire and he got seriously sick from all the smoke poor baby and last night i got him put to sleep. He died of leukemia from the smoke R.I.P Bolt!
I know this looks scary to do, but I have a bunny and it really isn't! My bunny actually yawns when I do it lol. One thing though is that I definitely wouldn't try to cut off that much at once (meaning that she cuts largs bits of white off of each nail all at one time). I find that my rabbit reacts better when I trim each nail a little at a time, but that could just be her preferance?
I got my rabbits when they're 7 weeks and i groomed and handle them constantly. The first time i cut thier nails, i was very scared!! But they're cooperative, now i hold them like carrying a baby in the cradle of my arms with thier feet face up. I normally would caress thier head first because they like it, they would be more relax and I could check through thier nails and cut them.
@grandamchi2000 - I just got something in my inbox telling me that you replied to MY comment, someone needs to grow up and move on. It's a fucking video about a rabbit ! LMAO!
I once accidently cut my bunnies claw off when trying to clip her nails, I felt so bad and it never grew back. After that I never attempted to go near them with clipper ever again.
this looks really simple. but i just wanna know... how much is it to have the bunnys nails clipped at the vets? becuz i dont wanna make a mistake. sooo i would like to know as soon as possible please!!! bitchbutcher can u help!
I really think this documentary is teaching wqrong things. It's quite dangerous to trim your rabbits nails. Especially if your rabbit has dark nails where you can't see the blood vessel. Because, if you accidentally cut in the vessel, the bleeding doesnt stop. That's why I owuld recommend , especially if you dont see the blood vessels, to go to the vet and let him/her do it. Because they have a special device to close the cut vessel.
No, the vet will never cut the blood vessel. there is no special instrument that's supposed to cut the vessel..because you never cut the vessel!!! For dark nails, it's harder to see where the quick ends so you have to shine a light underneath them to see a little better.
I think you understood me wrong. I mean that if you cut the vessel on accident you can't stop the bleeding. But the vet has a device to stop the bleeding. So it's quite dangerous to cut the nails of your rabbit and you should let the vet trim the nails. Did I explain it better?
Oh in that case, they sell this stuff called "quickstop" that's supposedly really good for stopping blood when you cut into the quick. I think that everyone should be able to cut the nails of their rabbit if the rabbit is comfortable enough for them and they are really careful. I would think that since the vet is more frightening to the rabbit (since they're strangers) and that would post more of a threat. But it depends on the rabbit. Mine would sit still for me.
ok. I haven't heard of that. The problem is, that many children have rabbits and they wont be able to do that. So I think in that case they should go to the vet and let him do it. That's why I recommended it.
how did you do that???it looks so easy there but my rabbit just wont sit still and everyttime i touch his feet he just bites my fingers away =( but i think his getting used to it =) but its hard to do their back feet
if your bunny bites, it could be that your bunny is suffering because it doesn't have a bunny friend. Rabbits live in groups, if kept isolated they tend to show aggressive behavior.
So if you have a female rabbit, the best is to get a male neutered rabbit as a partner. Mixed sexes get along the best.
Aggressive behaviors also happens if the rabbit has to less space.

I'm glad to hear that. If you have any questions about how to introduce your new rabbit, just write me a message. I 'll be happy to help :)

Yes you need to, else they can grow too long and hurt the bunny, in their natural environment they dig, but a house bunny won't have much to dig in so their nails will grow.
yes, you do. Because in nature they fret their nail on the ground they walk on. But kept at home he wont have a good ground to naturally trim off their nails. But as I said. you should better go to a vet, and let him trim your rabbit nails.
My rabbit doesn't enjoy getting her nails trimmed. I use to get the vet to do it but that became way to expensive after a while. I normally have my parents hold her while I trim her nails. Then I give her a treat when it's done.
first time ive ever cut my bunny's nails was today. she had a previous owner before me but i decided to clip them. she hated it... she didn't bite, she doesn't bite at all. but she was jumping and kicking hard and i was scared she might break her back. for now on im taking her for walks outside becuuse the side walk shaves them. i was scared to cut them, i said to who was ctting them, away from the pink, waaaay away from it. shes laying don in her cage right now, probably mad at me
@grandamchi2000 she said not to cut the quick or they'll bleed. Which is basically the same thing as saying "if you cut to far it will bleed". At least people know you can't cut the nails all the way down based on what she said. but you're right, she didn't say anything about stopping bleeding or infections.
i use to have a bunny that would follow me constantly and circle around me wanting to play and we would be soo happy together (may he rest in peace)
but how do i get my new bunny to do the same thing?
i know alll bunnies are very different with different personalities but .. (sighs) i know my new bunny is not the same as my old one.. so how can i let him play with me? and be kinda like the old one?
THT NAIL TRIMMER CUTS SO SMOOTHLY!!! my rabbits' nail trimmer cut so roughly...it more like breaks the nail D=< and my dad is too cheap to buy a cat one T-T
This is trickier. You may need a helper. What you do is get a small flashlight and shine it through the nail (the helper can do this) allowing you to see where the bloodline (quick) is.
Hi. I am thinking of getting a bunny but i have some questions. If i ever get one, i am planning to put it in a rather big cage and let it out to play once in a little while ( minium 1 time a week). But i am not sure if i put hay in the cage, does it still need a litterbox? Or does in poop in the hay and stuff? I guess i'm asking some strange questions, but i hope bunny lovers can tell me the answer. ( I live in a flat with no backyard.)Some advice on bunnies too!
you have to let it out and hour a day. put a litter pan in fill it with carefresh beding (no cedar or pine its bad for them) lay newspaper e verywhere else and put in some hay for it to eat.
They need to eat pellets and hay. It helps grind down their teeth. They will use a litter box. You could put hay all over the bottom, but then you have to replace it often so that they can eat clean, fresh hay.
Why do you want a pet that sits in its cage all the time? I would suggest gerbils--they like to be let alone and are fun to watch (put in lots of bedding and watch them burrow). Rabbits need daily exercise outside of the cage and will litter box train. Use Yesterday's News in the litter pan. And buy a book on rabbits first!
If you knew how to take care of rabbits you would realize that only bad pet owners allow them to "sit in a cage" all of the time - or any of the time for that matter!
uhmm... i tried cutting my bunnies nails, im scared though and idk wer my nearest vet is... what shoulldd i dooooo!??!!? :( and my bunny always likes to run around so i got it one of those excercise balls but it just sat in it..... so i returned it, should i buy it back?? helllppp :[
a while back my mom was cutting my bunny's nail i think she cut her whole nail of cause my rabbit just started screaming it was so sad but after she was just sitting there and staring at my mom it was kinda funny cause she was just looking at her....she recoverd though!!!!!!
just wanted to tell you guy so you could laugh!!!!!!
I need help. I recently tried to cut my rabbit's nail and it came clean off. I stopped the bleeding but will his nail ever grow back? And should I take him to a vet (if I can find one) because he is limping a bit and holding his paw up.
thats so sad yes take him to a vet if he's limping and holding his paw but once i cut my rabbits nails and it came right off but it didnt seem to bother him he just kept hoping and didnt even bleed there was just like a little oich of blood on the nails but that was it
alisarap, you shouldnt cut baby bunnies nails too much, only when it starts to curve. Their nails are verryyy fragile and cuting them too much could break them too the pink part ( which is where the blood is).
Hmm... is it totaly black? one of my rabbits have black nails but a red/pink part is visible underneath. ;) Check that. If it is totaly black, you should only cut the nail when it starts to curve, and only a very small part. If it bleeds, put some oxygenated water (I dont kow if that's correct english) on some coton and press the nail until the bleeding stops.
If you feel uncomfortable, you should take your bunny at the vet's so he can show you exactly how it's done ;) hope that helped!
I have a black Holland lop. I've heard from several people that he's pretty much one of a kind, mostly because he's so calm. I can do pretty much whatever I want with him and he doesn't care. I carry him around on his back most of the time. He's never bitten me, but he does like to lick my face and arms all over. It's the cutest thing in the world. :)
My rabbit is the worst - my Dad has to hold him down because he squrims to much. We took him to the vet to get help and the vet said my rabbit was the worst he ever saw for trimming his nails. It took me and the vet assistant to hold him while the vet trimmed his nails. Clover has never liked me touching his feet, just his thing I. guess
...huh..my ginea pigs the same way hes so hard the handl wene it comes to his nials and his head so liltte and he trys to bit me...do you think a vet or groomer -like the ones at petsmart- will try to cut the because he did loos a nail once-its ok it wasint harmeful..there was no blood but he didint run arand for a waile after that..-
but hes ben cut 2 times on the same foot because 1 of his feet are black so its hare to tell where to cut..im useing the Pedi Paws thing now it works on most pets
I tried to trim my bunny's nails, but he keep struggling a kept trying to bite me...my bunny and i get along fine...but he doesnt let me cut his nails...
my bunny used to be like that too. i get a towel and wrap it around him loosely and i just take his paws out one at time slowly and he is very calm that way. He doesnt try to bite me like that. hope it helps!

my rabbit doesnt struggle when i carry her, touch her legs fingers or clean her eyes. very obedient girl. but i dare not trim her nail, i am afraid it will bleed..
my rabbits are really calm with it but my new rabbit i just got her a week ago, she gets impatient then mad and when shes mad she bites...HARD :P very painfful i suffer much but i still love my bunny's lol and i have troubles clipping the front side nails that are on the inner leg kinda and when i turn over my other rabbit on his back he thumps me with his back feet and they are huge...((has 12 pound rabbit)):P any tips ??

aebpsin39620 2 years ago 2
i use to have a bunny that would follow me constantly and circle around me wanting to play and we would be soo happy together (may he rest in peace)
but how do i get my new bunny to do the same thing?
i know alll bunnies are very different with different personalities but .. (sighs) i know my new bunny is not the same as my old one.. so how can i let him play with me? and be kinda like the old one?
SexiKittie 2 years ago 2
when a rabbit circles you it is not because they are playing, it's because they "love" you because most likely they have not been spayed.
tinnybell 2 years ago
lol i know, he wasnt.. but i still love him.. even tho hes gone.

my rabbit has dark nails how do see where the blood line is?
tcgymnast88 2 years ago
me too my rabbits nails are black and i see nothing
BunnyLuv011 2 years ago
ya me too! wat do i do?
brittsfamous1 2 years ago
This is trickier. You may need a helper. What you do is get a small flashlight and shine it through the nail (the helper can do this) allowing you to see where the bloodline (quick) is.

Posting to all bunny videos:
( I live in a flat with no backyard.)Some advice on bunnies too!
imtama 2 years ago
you have to let it out and hour a day. put a litter pan in fill it with carefresh beding (no cedar or pine its bad for them) lay newspaper e verywhere else and put in some hay for it to eat.
tcgymnast88 2 years ago
They need to eat pellets and hay. It helps grind down their teeth. They will use a litter box. You could put hay all over the bottom, but then you have to replace it often so that they can eat clean, fresh hay.

Why do you want a pet that sits in its cage all the time? I would suggest gerbils--they like to be let alone and are fun to watch (put in lots of bedding and watch them burrow). Rabbits need daily exercise outside of the cage and will litter box train. Use Yesterday's News in the litter pan. And buy a book on rabbits first!
Sugarbuns68 2 years ago
If you knew how to take care of rabbits you would realize that only bad pet owners allow them to "sit in a cage" all of the time - or any of the time for that matter!

I need help. I recently tried to cut my rabbit's nail and it came clean off. I stopped the bleeding but will his nail ever grow back? And should I take him to a vet (if I can find one) because he is limping a bit and holding his paw up.
BlueDAngel 2 years ago
Yes, BlueDAngel,
TAKE YOUR BUNNY TO THE VET.
His nail will most likely grow back.
FunnyStuff908 2 years ago
thats so sad yes take him to a vet if he's limping and holding his paw but once i cut my rabbits nails and it came right off but it didnt seem to bother him he just kept hoping and didnt even bleed there was just like a little oich of blood on the nails but that was it

oh yeah nice , i am about to buy a two baby rabit !
TA A LOT !
alisarap 2 years ago
alisarap, you shouldnt cut baby bunnies nails too much, only when it starts to curve. Their nails are verryyy fragile and cuting them too much could break them too the pink part ( which is where the blood is).
Just be very carefull ;)
MilkyFactory 2 years ago
How do you avoid cutting the pink bit if the rabbit's nails are black? I'm scared of cutting my bunny's!
leesajade 2 years ago
Hmm... is it totaly black? one of my rabbits have black nails but a red/pink part is visible underneath. ;) Check that.
MilkyFactory 2 years ago
I just did a mini-checkup on my bunny... the fleshy bit is just visible, but i still don't have the confidence to cut is nails... :s

MakiMaki962047 3 years ago 2
you can try to light it up with a lamp under the nail so you see through the nail.

i am assuming you have a bunny i am thinking of getting one are they aggresive or do they bite a lot? plz respond
modderman3000 3 years ago
I have a black Holland lop. I've heard from several people that he's pretty much one of a kind, mostly because he's so calm. I can do pretty much whatever I want with him and he doesn't care. I carry him around on his back most of the time. He's never bitten me, but he does like to lick my face and arms all over. It's the cutest thing in the world. :)
MakiMaki962047 3 years ago
thank you for the reply it was very helpful :D
modderman3000 3 years ago
My Holland Lop doesn't stay still too . I think it doesn't trust me a lot ... Hmm .
xstrawberryl0ves 3 years ago
Try to lay it in you arms, so it looks up on you. Then it feels like they feel inferior or something, they almost look sleepy x). Hard to explain.
but my rabbits are very calm when they are laying like that. Hope it helps..
tILOVERAINt 3 years ago
what about the bunnies that dont sit still? mine pulls his paw away when i try to trim his nails, and he doesnt stay in one spot.

My rabbit is the worst - my Dad has to hold him down because he squrims to much. We took him to the vet to get help and the vet said my rabbit was the worst he ever saw for trimming his nails. It took me and the vet assistant to hold him while the vet trimmed his nails. Clover has never liked me touching his feet, just his thing I. guess
lilmalachiteclover 3 years ago
...huh..my ginea pigs the same way hes so hard the handl wene it comes to his nials and his head so liltte and he trys to bit me...do you think a vet or groomer -like the ones at petsmart- will try to cut the because he did loos a nail once-its ok it wasint harmeful..there was no blood but he didint run arand for a waile after that..-
but hes ben cut 2 times on the same foot because 1 of his feet are black so its hare to tell where to cut..im useing the Pedi Paws thing now it works on most pets
