I had no idea Caccini also wrote an opera called il Trovatore. I can`t believe how BAD this is!!! And obviosly they hired a Manrico who seems to be dying of anemia as well, I would have burned both along with Azucena up the stake, preferably during the first minutes of the first act!
Disgusted. This is a singer with no technique and no sense of how to perform in any style. She sings like a 15 year old who constructs the music around her defects. Sorry but its the truth. People are so easily seduced by the weird and uncanny. There is NO trill, no true legato, very bad intonation...nothing. There is not even a good basic instrument.
My dream is to master class with Simone Kermes and know it pessoalmmente. She is wonderful and a great inspiration. For me it is the best soprano who is alive today, with the best techniques, followed by Patricia and Julia Petibon Lezhneva. Simone Kermes is, without doubt, the Queen of the Baroque. His technique is impeccable.
I love your staccato, Leggat, trills,, oh everything! I really wanted to make the general trills and flourishes as it does because it is, harmonically speaking...
Just kill me, but I think this is the first Leonora which sounds like Verdi might have heard or even intended - she is singing pure Belcanto in its original meaning, and the period instruments orchestra and the great choir provide us FINALLY with elegant, subtle and stilistically appropriate Verdi - a great job!!! Just listen to the Miserere, I've never heard it so stunningly fearsome played! I think THIS is the future of opera!
@ilNuovoArchaeOpteryx Well, Verdi is certainly not a "pure Belcanto" composer ; try and read Celletti's book about it ; perhaps you'll catch a glimpse of what "its original meaning" is actually.
@JB63operaphile I was not meaning Belcanto in its meaning as a musical epoque but in the meaning of vocal technique. And by this, I suppose, you can call this Belcanto singing by any means, and, in addition, every singer in Verdi's time (and later on) was trained in this tradition. Rosina Penco, Verdi's first Leonora, was without any doubt a belcanto-trained singer, and her vocal "Fach" was certainly that of a dramatic coloratura soprano in the tradition of Belcanto-singers like Giuditta Pasta.
@JB63operaphile And, regarding books, I certainly can recommend Philip Gosset's splendid study "Divas and Scholars - Perforiming Italian Opera" - so, you see, I am not writing my theses out of noting... ;)
@ilNuovoArchaeOpteryx But how can you say "this is the first Leonora who sounds like Verdi might have heard"?! I mean, it is just nonsensical : Ponselle, Callas, Gencer, Price, Caballé, Sutherland, all of them were remarkable exponents of Belcanto as a technique...
What a shame about that terrible tenor! He ruins the whole performance. I know Ms Kermes only from her early music recordings and this certainly makes an interesting performance (until that awful sound of the tenor joins her, horrid horrid horrid!) Bravo Kermes though.

Eh no!!! Il Trovatore no!!
Absolutely splendid ! perfect musician and technique. That's pure bel canto ! I wish the best for her career, and she will sing more this repertoire. I hope a cd will come with this aria, maybe some Meyerbeer, Rossini, Pacini, Mercadante.
My god ! A soubrette singing Leonora ! Her voice has no depth, very few colours... and no power ! I find her baroque contribution rather poor, but this one is almost funny : I keep wondering whether she is not a pop-singer ! She is a real joke !

At least a singer who sings as the composer intended, with a steady clear tone, without the obnoxious quarter-tone wobble that has been called "singing" by the tone-deaf since the gang of mighty screech-owls, led by that tone-deaf cheap Greek whore Callas, drove people away from opera into the arms of nigger jazz and punk rock. Now MUSIC and CULTURE might finally have a chance to return to Europe - what a joy!
