Hey, I got a question - what would you suggest me of those 2 knives? I dont care about the price because my cousin will bring it to me? My hand is about 10 cm wide.
I would choose the Recon Scout. But I haven't played with either of them.
Still I like the bigger thicker knives. Plus I am not really a fan of the AUS8 they are using in the SRK nowadays. I like it in a folder but I don't know if it is suited for a survival knife other than the fact that it takes more for it to rust. The Recon Scout makes a better survival blade in my opinion
I trained with the US Army/Special Forces Group in Bad Tolez Germany. We did eveything with our knives from opening ammo crates, digging a pit, cutting C4 explosives & timed fuze to taking out a guard at night from the rear, but we NEVER..............chopped WOOD with them:)
Get a roast, put it into a pair of blue jeans or military fatigues. Now hang it from a tree limb...........put ON your war face(You got a WAR FACE dont cha?)...........Now....Stab it, cut it ,slash it and evaluate if this knife will do what it is designed for, KILLING the enemy!
@hobbitg3 i'd definitely go with the srk. tanto point knives are only good for two things: stabs through body armour and snap cuts in a knife fight, and neither of those help much more than a normal knife even in a fight. they're much more time consuming to sharpen because of the secondary point, and because they lack a smooth curve many tasks like slicing, cutting, and fine point work are nearly impossible for most people to do.
try ou the leatherneck sf - that is a great compromise between the 2. i just got one and will do a d-test/ batoning test later like within 2 weeks. i love the looks of it so far and easy work i've done it works great. chopping is like so so. but batoning is the main function i'd use aside from of course everything else. i know it's not a chopper!! for that you need a RS or TM - Busse, or custom like a felix franscisco. all in the same price range. i do like the SF though it looks cool.
Nutnfancy is chopping Pine and Aspen trees which have a lot of sap and you must use WD40. The wood you are chopping looks very dry and maybe a hardwood?
WD40 makes your life a whole lot easier when batoning. Good video, both blades look good. Currently I use a Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie for wood processing, which it excels at, but it is kind of a beast, you don't want that thing hanging from your belt!
I think what you said about the WD-40 was spot-on. It's not altogether necessary at all, but it doesn't lubricate the blade quite well, and you can DEFINITELY see a difference when you're splitting, or when you're using a saw to cross-cut. Lub'ing up that blade just makes a big difference. But, you're right that it's more of a luxury than a necessity. If I'm stuck in the wilderness, I can do without WD-40. There's no way it goes in any of my survival kits. Haha. But it is good fire-starter!
I noticed in one of your other videos that you have a GB axe. I'm very curious as to whether it is as much better than the Cold Steel Trail Boss as the price difference suggests. Don't really know anything about 1055 carbon either. Any thoughts?
I owned both is Carbon V and will not buy any of their carbon models that they now make with stainless. I didn't like the handle on the Recon as it is narrowest at the point where the hand is widest. Also, 5/16 was way too thick for me, 1/4" would be better and often less than that is great. I sold the Recon and the SRK took place of the Kabar as I thought the blade was more practical on the SRK. WD40? Yeah it's just something else to carry and is just disposable.
i have to agree i do love th ark but on the other hand i also love my chopping capabilities of a larger blade. if my saw breaks and i haveno more spare blades i can at least count on falling somewhat large logs. nice vid bro.
Ever try pitting the recon tanto against the SRK? I do realize that the recon tanto is more "hollywood" if you will, but seems like it may be as good at chopping, and when used as a pry or leverage tool, it should also do well. I would be interested to see if the tanto truly cannot do certain things the SRK can. People say it, but don't prove it.
Nice job and all vallid points. I have been carrying a 5" blade, hatchet and folding saw as of late and fine them all good for what I need them for. Thanks for the head to head test.
i love both blades brother. both are high value quality knives. i prefer recon because just like u mentioned it just chops like a machine and the full flat ground just rocks. i love that ground. but SRK has a special place in my heart because it was the first blade i "made" myself as you saw in my vid. did you see that CS is coming out with new "leatherneck" knife? looks like a great combination of srk and recon. and great price point too... be safe mate
I bought the srk (AUS8 steel) less than a year ago and...... I love it. I used it during my hikings or camping in the alps (in Italy) winter and summer.
If you are searching for a good survival knife and you don't want to spend much, that's the knife!
Great video! I really wish Cold Steel would start making the SRK in Carbon steel again. I know why they dropped the Carbon V steel but I don't see why they couldn't just start using 1095 or something.
That being said the AUS-8 is good IMHO if you are going to stash the knife and not use or maintain it for a while in say a Cache or bag that you don't touch unless it's an emergency because you know the knife wont be rusted out.
I have an SRKin AUS-8 in my vehicle emergency kit, I'd rather the carbon V or another version of Carbon Steel in the SRK but I also like how with stainless steel I can feel confident that it wont be rusted out if I leave it in the bag for a year without oiling it. I'm building some "caches" in Action Packer Totes to lock and leave in family members basements to keep some supplies out of my house and I'm thinking of getting a couple more Stainless Steel SRKs for in those caches.
Nice demonstration, but I have to agree with some other posters that chopping wood is not a knife's function. Great idea in a pinch though. I would for that purpose use a 12" Ontario Knife machete with a sawback feature to cut wood too. Not too much larger and you can clear brush also. The extra heft allows for chopping and that's something a knife just can't do well. My .02 and thanks for the vid.
Dig the review bra. Great job. I'd also pick the SRK. Only thing is, I like big knives. So mixed emotions. Hate being conflicted like this. But when its all said and done the SRK is a hell of a lot cheaper than that recon. Problem solved. Aloha
Great video , love your channel. Umm... I don't want to come across as a jerk, but I seem to remember a time when people used an axe to chop and split wood. I think using a tool (any tool) for a task that it wasn't made for is not a fair test. Knives are cutting tools, if you want to split wood... Buy and use and axe. My two cents worth.
@kyadak I have to agree, a knife to me is a back up tool- PLAN A would be my wetterlings axe PLAN B would be to use my sawvivor PLAN C would be my knife
@kyadak The knife axe combo is a classic for sure. For my camping kit I like to keep it lightweight, so I pack a 12" bow/hack saw and the SRK. I wouldn't carry a hatchet, so the SRK fills that role plus it's primary function as a cutting tool. After this experience, I'm thinking I'd rather use a saw than an axe in many cases. Of course both is better.
@envirosponsible i want to buy a coldsteel knife but i hesitate because it has a rubber handle that some people say will deteriorate quickly.. what do you think? is the handle strong or is it comeing apart like i was told? how long have u been using the knife for?

Cold Steel should have used SK-5 carbon steel for the SRK. SK-5 is much closer to their old Carbon V than AUS-8 is. Much tougher than AUS-8 also.

Those knives are designed for stabbing, cutting and KILLING! These are FIGHTING knives.
Not for splitting wood. If ya wanna split wood? Go get a hatchet or an axe.
Use the Right tool for the right JOB! "Sarge"......US Army Recon
HerbWalker 4 months ago
@HerbWalker Doesn't look like a fighting knife. Fighting knives are usually double edged at the tip for stabbing. These look like single edge knives.

I think the 6" blade is a jack of all trades, master of none. It's a good lightweight, do all tool if you are willing to live with compromises.
