THE Mower deck belt breaks when the deck gets tilted as you go around say a tree. The deck tilts to one side. Because there is a piece of steel that sticks up at the back of the deck That the belt passes. It is meant to keep the belt from flapping so much it falls off >> But It is sharp and will cut and shred the belt every time it gets touched. This is a planned item to rip up your belts I believe the factory knows this. I have lost 3 belts in 30 hours.
@brokenbrush I'm aware of what you are describing. I have not had that problem with this JD tractor but my previous JD tractor had the same deck, except the machine had a manual belt clutch for the deck. it would experience that issue you have, and also scrape one deck pulley on the underside of the frame making a terrible sound. I feel the belts Deere sells now are a lesser quality belt as compared to earlier. ...too bad the cost of the belts doesn't reflect the lower grade.
I know exactly where that washer goes and you had to remove/replace another just like it. No, it will not be dirty or greasy and it will show signs of wear.
It goes over one of the pins that the deck hangs from. I had to buy two today as the JD dealer failed to replace them a couple of years ago. I found that out when I removed my deck and saw where they were at one time. You will see the marks on the yellow paint as well if you look for it.
@nourbutwatmi LOL! we'll see what happens this season. it gets grease-oil-filter and a fresh set of blades this weekend. hopefully no extra parts when finished!
@fergfergferg123 excellent idea, thank you. I agree they do hold up better. I use a Kevlar belt on another machine that has a big belt clutch / torque converter. -see my Minute Miser video.
@larry1961 sorry that was omitted, I had greasy hands and I was too busy trying to determine where the washer came from. the black pulley on the lower left has to be removed to slip the belt in place.

Try changing the drive belt on a 175.

how much are the belts?
mifan93 1 year ago
@mifan93 I forgot the exact costs, but the words "very expensive" will give you some idea. A guess would be over 100.00 if all three were needed.

@chatrkat go to the local mechanics they will sort you with a better belt (kevlar) for a few dollars
