  • I sent her fanmail when she was performing in London and got a short letter!

    I love this lady!

  • I saw this live the year she did it - and it was AMAZING! The guts it takes to walk onto a bare-naked stage and solo like that. What a Lady!

  • Thank you. Just Thank you!

  • The fact that she was 63 here just boggles my mind. And still on Broadway at 86!

  • This isn't the part I'd imagine her as playing, then again I was raised with knowing her as Mrs. Potts, but she does an amazing job with it!

Every part I've heard/seen her in is absolutely amazing!

  • What sort of grade would this be for both singing and musical theatre?

Any idea would be much appreciated :)

  • Please be live.

  • That's a very optimistic and "sane" interpretation of this song! Great :D She's simply the best ever!!

  • Love it!

  • I love Angela Lansbury. She is so talented and all of her programs and films are wonderful.

  • Thumbs up if you loved her as "Mrs. Santa Clause"

  • She has got to have been in her 60s back then,or very close to them! Again, like Merman, not the most beautiful of voices, but certainly ideal for 'musical theatre'.And,(I don't want to bang on about this, lol),another fine artiste we 'lost' to America! Though I'm sure the US appreciates the fact she relocated Stateside. But I sure would not wanna live next door to her in Cabot Cove, she attracts murderers like bees to a honey-pot!

  • Aww Look at Brian Williams!

  • Aww Look at Brian Williams!

  • just don't invite her to dinneer someone will die!! but i love her she is awesome

  • Never pass up a chance to see her live on stage. Saw her a couple of years ago in "Blithe Spirit" and she was the most energetic octogenarian I've ever seen! Marvelous performance!

  • People like Angela should never die :)

  • An enduring Treasure.....Always makes every performance special.......

  • OMG stick to Mame sweetie nice try but only Ethel

  • @scott12061972 She was actually considered to be the best Mama Rose out of all the women to play the character. Stephen Sondheim even said that she was his favourite person to ever sing the song.

  • Oh my Goddess...I did not remember her as a broadway singer.............She looks gorgeous in that dress too,and curiously enough,I did not like Ethel Merman at all...Angela made it more bold and powerful!

  • 9 straight men have viewed this video.

  • and a very young Brian Williams!!!

  • i want that presence, i want that talent, i want that fame.....i want that dress!

  • @Broadway3 You know that on stage she is about eight and a half feet tall. There is nobody with greater presence on stage and much of it comes from her sheer physicality -- she occupies space with those amazing arms and legs and that actor-perfect frame.

  • @Broadway3

If you are hungry enough & if you want it badly enough & are willing to sacrifice enough....you'll GET it !!!

  • Was that Brian Williams at the beginning?

  • How could they ever have made the movie of Mame without Angela Lansbury??!!!

  • Amazing!!!

  • WOW, it is great to see Angela Lansbury like this. I was never a big fan, but I'm impressed.

  • please tell me, viewers...HOW DID THIS WOMAN LOSE THE TONY FOR MADAME ARMFELDT?!?!?!?!?!?!

  • @sondheimisGAWD Katie Finneran was absolutely amazing in Promises, Promises. I have to say, the two performances were similar in the sense that they appeared in less scenes than the leads, yet were more memorable. It was a tossed up between the two. I agree Angela was absolutely wonderful. But I believe she will win her next Tony in the next year or two with another Sondheim piece. So don't be sad.

  • I love Angela Patti and Bernadette ( even though she was total miscast she can sing the hell out of those songs) Angela sounds awesome like usual

  • @broadwayloverny10 who was miscast? and in what?

  • @fatheranthony4pope Oh gosh that does look confusing lol. I meant to say Bernadette was miscast. She put a lot of emotion and could sing the hell out of those songs. But 1. She was sick for most of it and 2. Just didn't feel right for the part. Angela Lansbury was so damn good!!!

  • I love her explanation of the magic of theater - absolutely spot on. Saw her in Blithe Spirit. She was magical herself.

  • @bobbiwib LOL

  • wow you can tell she must have such an amazing presence

    what a dame!

    Lady gaga..WATCH AND LEARN!

  • I think that's Into The Woods coming onstage. They seem to play the music in the background.

  • i just love her on Broadway. She is gold on Broadway. Shes in a musical now

  • @rangerdave1973 Are you talking about A Little Night Music? I think Elaine Stritch already replaced her. It's a shame that she didn't win her 6th Tony this year for that role though.

  • @honggiangvogia Elaine Stritch is still at it? thats awesome that she is still that active good job Elaine

  • did she say 1989? that's the year i was born lol

  • Thanks so much for this gem - I think I fell in love with Dame Lansbury that night!

  • my god..I never ever cried at musical numbers...till now

  • is that Matt Lauer at 0:03

  • @irvingklaw57 No, it's Brian Williams.

  • @irvingklaw57 Close, but it's Brian Williams.

  • deos anyoneknow if the audio used for this performance is available, esecially the ending? I really need this version for an audition for my school's next year talent show. Please?

  • Angela Lansbury is beautiful.

    magnificent.

    Most Amazingly talented.

    A pure star.

    An inspiration(: <3

  • Holy crap. She does not move or look 64 here. What an amazing woman! Not for those reasons though. She is pure brilliance.

  • @lovelyjoints Resonance? Her voice has resonance. And it is quite easy to hear her.

    Maybe its your speakers.

  • I have been privileged to see two great ladies of the stage perform in Broadway shows-Mary Martin and Carol Channing. What i wouldn't give to see the marvelous Angela Lansbury live on stage too! She is absolutely the greatest!

  • HONORARY OSCAR. I repeat, HONORARY OSCAR. This years Oscar show could've used something like this. Alot of something like this !

  • I LOVE ANGELA LANSBURY!!! Who didnt love murder she wrote?! And her voice as Mrs potts?! SHE is a living legend! I must send her fanmail before she passes!!

  • Would love to have this Tony Awards Show on DVD-R. Also looking for other past Tony Award Shows. Please contact me! Thanks...

  • Hi Angela fans, does anyone on here have any video footage on a DVD-R of Angela & Bea Arthur performing from Mame? I'm looking for anything on Mame with Angela & Bea singing. The Tony Awards too! Please send me an email. Thanks.

  • Love this and her, but isn't it odd she opened up with a Gypsy song with Tyne Daly as Rose in the '89 revival that same year?

  • I can't get enough of this.

  • She's so cute. =]

  • no offence but i just don't get it with angela lansbury. i don't dislike her, i just don't get it....

  • Somebody posted this performance with the title "Ethan Hawke disses Angela Lansbury at the Tonys" - no disrespect to the person who posted the clip but I can't imagine anyone looking at Angela Lansbury sing "Everythings Coming Up Roses" at the Tony Awards cares what Ethan Hawke thinks.

  • Angela was always wonderful. Such a great talent. Great stage presence and so full of energy. One of my favorites of all time....so beautiful and talented.

  • Somehow in the "who's the best Rose" compilations on Youtube Lansbury always gets left off - I'd say on Broadway was second only to Merman.

  • @Chutson353 I have seen them all live except Merman who was NO actress. She sang every song like it was Alexander's Ragtime Band at the top of her lungs. Tyne Daly was the best actress and Delores Gray the best singer. Bernadette Peters was downright awful and Patti LuPone was a mixed bag but her ending was heartbreaking. Lansbury was too classy but what a powerhouse.

  • @roccoh21 Of course she didn't perform on the stage but I still say Roz Russell was the best actress to play the role - that's all a matter of personal taste though. She also had the chance to perfect every line since the performance was for a film.

  • Angela you are AMAZING

  • Comment removed

  • Mrs. Lansbury is one of my all time favorite actress. My wish is to meet her in person in London one day. That would be the utmost altimate gift for me.

  • Did they have wig mics in 1989?

She along with Broadway greats like Ethel Merman started out not using mics so I doubt she is using one.

  • OH my goodness she's just phenomenal.

  • not sure if thats her hair(i suspect its a wig )but she did slide her hands on the sides and not the bang area, which is where a good hairdresser would hide it.course nowadays they have to wear 2 in case 1 shorts out. either way i agree it is such a distraction when the mike is taped across thier face. Just one of those things you have to overlook in modern theatre, i guess...i would definitely belive she had the pipes to go withough a body mic...

  • danny, difficult to say 4 sure esp. w/ 2ndhand recording.tried to see if there was a bulgeon her back or a wire when she turned but it was too fast

  • i would have loved to see her in this role! i hope i get to see LNM....

  • I saw her do it in Dallas way back when - then I got her autograph at the stage door - what a wonderful person! I shall never forget her graciousness and interest in the fans.

  • amazing performer. i hope to see her this spring in a little night music, even at 80 i'm sure she's rocking the house.

  • She sure can hold the attention of an audience...

  • i love angela. she's the best broadway actress ever, hands down

  • Note too, that she isn't wearing one of those tacky mics clipped to her dress (or these days to one's wig or hairpiece, then over their ear to their cheek).

There's a mic front and center near the floor, but that's it. She had to belt it out over the orchestra like a REAL singer/performer.

  • are you sure about that? i work in as a professional wigstylist in theatre and opera and the proper wig or hairstyle can hide a mic. Her voice doesnt fade at all on her turn or when she moves fromone side of the stage to the other...You also have to consider the way music is written today versus the way it was in Styne's day.

  • Pretty sure. Listen closely...her voice does fade somewhat when she turns away from the audience and crosses backstage. Also the orchestra is the same volume throughout, yet she isn't. Thirdly, no mic is visible. And finally, at the end, she pulls her hair back a bit...if there was a mic hidden, she would be more careful.

    ???

  • @dannybex

I think she is wearing a body mic (common usage for stage musicals by the 1980s). If you listen to her dialogue at about 3.54 she exhales a laugh and lowers her head... the force of her breath makes a very obvious breathy noise which only sounds that way if the mic is close. I think it's in her cleavage! The transmitter pack could be a flat one strapped to her upper leg (Elaine Paige has used those). BTW... I saw Miss Lansbury's Mamma Rose in London and she was sensational!

  • she was really fit! her waist was like a pencil

  • mmm yeah hot

  • Angela is one of the greatest gifts this country has ever received from the British Isles!

  • @Hunterunc

I certainly second that emotion! A gifted actress AND singer! And a very nice & sweet lady to boot!

    :-)

  • 20 years later and she's still winning Tony's!

  • Oh my gosh, did anyone notice that the anchorman was Brian Williams? Looks like he did pretty well for himself in ten years. That's hysterical.

  • who doesn't love angela lansbury? haha

  • Just amazing!

  • OUtstanding Performance

  • Amost a year ago there was another video of this same thing with better audio and with the "prelude" music rather than the silence here (one coast got the prelude, the other didn't). I sure wish it would reappear!

  • She is brilliant. And still going on strong!

  • What she says about musical theatre being owned in the moment for the people who are there watching it and the stats who are performing it is spot on. Of love, in A Chorus Line, 'the gift was ours to borrow...' and true of the music and performance of any beloved production in the heart of the audience viewing. A beautiful thing to say and, of course... Angela. What an absolute knock out in all she does. The woman is truely an outstanding performer.

  • She was 200 years old on 1989 and look at her: what a body!!! XDDD

  • AND what a voice haha

  • lol i know!

  • This always brings a smile on my face no matter how many times I re-watch it. Thank you for uploading this MrDubbYou~ Angela is awesome!

  • That was beautiful!Not only a great performance,but such a great speech!Shes so inspiring,when i grow up i wanna be just like her.Wow i sound like im 5 lol

  • Not only did she give a great performance, she also solved a murder later on that evening.

  • @bugblood1978 What?

  • @bugblood1978 How is that? please explain

  • @bugblood1978

    HA !!!

    :-)

  • You can tell she enjoyed every moment of this performance. well done her

  • A true first class lady.

  • love it...

  • Whats up with Patti Lupone reprising Angela's roles? :) Madame Rose & Mrs. Lovett.. Love them both tho. <3

  • LOL well Patti can't help that Angela has played like every role in all of Broadway!!

  • I LOVE HER

  • I LOVE angela Lansbury. she was one of the best madame roses!

  • There's only two words to describe this woman...........The Best.

  • That's Broadway Stars and their real talent--live performances, and actual singing plus dancing and acting. And all, just wonderful.

  • Just saw her in Blithe Spirit yesterday. Still amazing. But this is just unbelievable. Brava Angela!!!

  • Angela is the essence of Broadway! What a lady!!!

  • haha I love Angela Lansbury! xD

  • love her! she gives ethel a run for her money!

  • Probably the most respected person in theater. Such grace and humbleness, and such TALENT! We love you, Angela!

  • Can angela get anymore stunning! I mean really? =D

  • Look n learn kids...Thats a star! A BIG ONE!

  • @TheMarkKarl here here

  • Amazing she is just one of if not the best performer of not only her time but all time. no one can match her

  • Angela Lansbury RULES!!!!!!!!!!

  • Angela Lansbury, I love you. You were the sweet in "The Harvey Girls;" marvelous in "Anyone Can Whistle;" and the absolute bomb in "Sweeney Todd." This performance is 45 years after Harvey Girls, and she still kicks ass and still looks good doing it. You can't beat that with a stick folks.

  • 64 WOW im 25 and dont sound that good

  • Angela Lansbury is BOSS!

  • Comment removed

  • Did anyone catch that was a YOUNG Brian Williams (anchor for NBC Nightly News) at the beginning of this video clip ??

  • Simply stunning! She can do no wrong in my opinion!

  • Was this hosted at the Gershwin theatre?

  • people say patti lupone was the best at this song, i think thats bull crap. Angela is the best! i love her in this song!!!!

  • She has been a star on Broadway for over forty years. She has starred in many shows including "Mame" and "Gypsy" and has won four Tony Awards. She is a legendary musical star.

  • she just won her fifth--God bless her!

  • Very suprised about this...I know she sang back in a few of her early movies..But good on her!!!!

Muder She Wrote nails it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I really don't know what everybody's talking about... Angela Lansbury was absolutely the best Rose I ever saw, including Ethel Merman, Rosalind Russell, Bette Midler etc.!

  • Lansbury is great, but Ethel owns Momma Rose lock, stock and barrel.

  • she is awesome in just about everthing. btw is that brian williams at the beginning?

  • WHAT 60 no way

  • Yep, she was 64 here. Even after all those years, she still nailed it.

  • I love that she is awesome! It's crazy how some stars are just ageless (she had to have been in her early 60's at this point). Frickin crazy!

  • AMEN!

  • I might not necessarily agree... but definitely see what you mean. Mama Rose is suppose to have talent, but not quite enough. Too loud-mouthed, too ego driven, too in-your-face... almost a Willy Loman of Gypsy. Thinks more than they are.

  • Exactly. Lansbury was too English, too polished, too sophisticated. Not brassy and loudmouthed and vulgar enough. Like you said, Rose needs to be almost Willy Loman-like, a nobody who thinks they are someone. Angela Lansbury's Rose would have made it without a doubt.

  • I remember when the CBS specials still came on like that, with the drums in the theme song and the spinning logo...lol

    I was 6

  • wow!, she's good, and by that time she was what? about 60's?

  • Watch more videos of her actually in the show! you will change your mind, i am sure!

  • In February 2009, the wonderful Angela is back on Broadway playing Madame Arcati in 'Blithe Spirit'.

Sure, its not a singing role but great that the lady is still able to be seen by people who can make it along.

  • She is so sweet

  • I love Angela i am 14 aswell

  • Is that a very young Brian Williams?

  • Sure looks like him to me O.O

  • I love this song. I am probably one of her youngest fans. I am 14 and i think she is absolutely AMAZING!!!!. I have seen nearly all her movies! YOU ROCK ANGELA!

  • I agree! I am 14 too, and I love her!!This song is just amazing when she sings it (although I liked it when Ethel Merman sang it too) Yes, ANGELA ROCKS!!

  • Somehow I missed Gypsy out in my musical education, so I'm trying to catch up... and blow me if it isn't Jessica Fletcher doing the educating!

  • 4 Tony awards,a CBE, Lifetime achievement award snd countless other awards. She is up there with all the other true greats of entertainment.

  • she's soo nice!!!!!!

  • oh come on! murder, she wrote?? my most favorite show on tv when i was little. and she reminds me of my grandma!lol i didnt know she sang! and this is in the year when i was born! yeah, Jessica, so you can even sing! haha

  • She's also the voice of Mrs Potts in "Beauty and the Beast" and sings the title song. :)

  • did they lower the key??? that ruins this for me.... but she's still amazing

  • angela played mrs lovvet in sweeney todd

angela played mamma rose in gyppsy

patti lupone played mrs lovvet in sweeney todd

patti lupone played mamma rose in gypsy

  • Patti is a second-rate hack. Please. Rock, Angela and Ethel!

  • OMG HOW DARE YOUUUU?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Patti LuPone, second rate???? A HACK????

She is as FIRST RATE as it gets.

She can't be that second rate if Roger Berlind (lead producer) would rather close Gypsy after her contract is up March 1st than to attempt to replace her.

Have you even seen Patti in Gypsy???

You are obviously uninformed and downright disrespectful.

That being said, Angela is an awesome Rose there is no denying that!

  • Uninformed? I have gone to theater for more than 30 years and I know what I am talking about. They are closing the show because of MONEY and because quite frankly actresses hate replacing someone because it is not worth it [i.e., no Tony award] unless their careers need help. And also no one wants to spend real money to sign a real star. In this production it is the scenes without Patti which are most interesting; the peak? "If Momma Was Married."

  • Actors replace each other all the time and shows keep running, but thats when the emphasis is on the show not necessarily the actors (like Phantom for example, not that those actors aren't great) but Gypsy is clearly not one of those shows because Patti LuPone is the one selling the tickets. The whole cast is fabulous and can stand on its own without Patti, but its the audience that determines a hit and the money just wouldn't be there without Patti, even if she was replaced with a "real star".

  • Laluponeista88 is correct.

Gypsy is, in fact, closing b/c they'd have trouble replacing Patti LuPone. It does NOT have to do with money.
