@beastinblack But some women can be very brutal. Anyway brutality has nothing to do with art and civilization. There’s no brutality in this symphony. This orchestra is only a group of frustrated machos.
During May 1809, when the attacking forces of Napoleon bombarded Vienna, Beethoven was very worried that the noise would destroy what remained of his hearing.
@heinerle456 Yes I heard of the pillow tragedy. Lud couldn’t hear his maidservant who was bringing dinner knocking on the door so he starved to death while humming his tenth symphony. That’s why women can’t be musicians in this orchestra.
Barry Cooper has extensively studied Beethoven's sketchbooks. Barry is best known for his books on Beethoven, as well as a completion and realization of Beethoven's fragmentary Symphony No. 10.
@heinerle456 Barry had a hard time deciphering B’s fragmentary 10th because at the time B was as blind as a mole and he had written the first fragments in Braille.
During that sad period, Haydn died, aged 77, at the end of May 1809, shortly after an attack on Vienna by the French army. Napoleon was hugely impressed with Haydn's work and praised it to others.
How cool is it the way Bohm just listens and tilts his head during the segue leading from the third movement to the opening of thefourth movement? He does nothing with his arms. His mere presence is enough.
Very very good - IMO equal to my Kleiber/Concertgebouw classic of the 1950s and THAT for many years was the standard against which all others were measured - I hope your posting receives many more hits

At that time we where a few who really knew the incredible chance to have him still in this world. Official critics did not like karl bohm, he was out of fashion. Some knew, yes, that he was the last of all a world of music. He was like an old wine, with no more body but allways more taste. He was simply great. And today we can discover him again, that dear herr professor
Magnificent conducting of the work, played by a stupendous orchestra. Incredible that this was in 1977, and note that the VPO still had not a single woman musician. This was not by chance, but by policy.
Absolutely agree about the quality of the conductor and the performance ... but any good conductor who chooses to do so can conduct without the score of a well-known work. When asked why he did not do so, Klemperer replied, 'Because I can read music!'.
Ahhh Karl... Ever, even as an old man, an inspiration. No score required, knew every note by hugeness of heart. Felt every nuance, every subtelty. Able to translate through the orchestra, that passion and fire into incredible performance.

I have always dismissed Bohm for his turgid slow tempi, but this has me thinking again. I wonder what they put in his tea this night?

A masterwork of simplicity, efficiency and musicality.
