i remember seeing him live and was struck by the medium size of the voice, but at how totally capable he was at being a total performer. beauty of tone and timbre and control of the line. very good. and he made us listen and respond. . a huge voice is great..but i don't think that is all verdi was writing for, really
The greatest varitone on the world's opera stages with a classic lyric baritone voice replete with great beauty and easy top notes. Thank you for the post.
Whoever has heard him at the MET will agree that he has a relative small but very beautiful voice. He is a master with the microphone and uses the mic more efficient to his benefit than anybody else in opera today.
Listen carefully to the unusual deep breaths starting at 2:18. Especially at 2:58 and 3:10where his breaths are overpowering even the orchestra. He must have the mic very close to him or hidden somewhere which makes his voice sound so big.
D.H...wonderful, although some don't like him.I don't hear off pitch notes or vocal forcing. He adds that fluttering (whatever the Italian term is ?), at the end of his arias for colour, and to me it adds so much.He is a major talent and has been for some time, and hopefully far into the future as well.
FUCK! He forces his voice at the end, sings off tone because of that. And, come on at the end...high A!!! why not? he is building it up to the seventh with great power and....NO!
bull... get new ears. Singers have some say, conductors have the final say. You don't sing it the way they want, then you don't work with them anymore... except if you are a Sutherland, or Pavorotti or Niellsen etc. And, he might have had a bad cold and chose not to take the "A". He's a singer, not a jukebox. He sings an old school style. I didn't hear him force, just singing in an old Italian style. We don't hear a lot of this anymore... unfortunately.
i don´t understand how somebody can say, that he barks...
he is ...parfait:))

@energyglobal, Totally agree. He has a beautiful but small voice. The mic does wonderful things.

Such a pity to end like this. Really bad.
