Because so many viewers change channel if there isn't an explosion, or a death, or at least some shouting, every five seconds, grabbing their attention. Or so it seems, anyway. ;)

don't forget that they need to be shown the highlights of the whole show before it starts,
-and- told what's going to happen next before EVERY ad break.

try watching anything produced by Discovery channel...
they show you everything in the whole show in the first 30 seconds.
it's like going to a movie and getting told how it ends before it starts... what's the point?
