Descent 3 was the "game that never was" for me. When it first came out, I was interested in the concept of a six-degree-freedom shooter, but the computer couldn't handle it. Descent was advanced for its time. We had to take the game back to the store, and no more was heard of it. I'm glad there are videos on the YouTube, showing me just what I missed.

This is real gaming. The gameplay is excellent and exhilarating, the sound effects are just incredible. The massive echo makes you feel how cavernous the level is. The guidebot RULES! lol

I used to play Descent 1 back in the day and I loved that game so much my ctrl key got worn out from playing so much.

When I see this and yes I played 1+2 It kinda failed due to the lightning and textures-textures are always done to a 1 screensize ( then scaled down-baad) and the lightning is overall baad- and the music is not descent

@TigerRaptorFX ugh... I remember playing this level on insane... took a bajillion deaths from those storm troopers cause they're like 95% accurate with mass drivers on insane difficulty... Only way to get through them on that is tactical espionage, pulling them back, and picking off one at a time by taking them by surprise and just unloading on them.

Oh how I did love these games... I never got into D3 but I LOVED playing D2 on the Net or one on one against my roomate at the time. I will never forget the comedy of sending a nuke after my roomie as he flew past my hiding spot and hearing him go "AIIIEEEEEEEEEEE SHIT!" from his room down the hallway. That and watching people panic under fire and slam blindly into walls trying to get away, lol... Or doing it yourself... What a riot that game was. :-)

@Howler76 It works fine in XP/XP 64 bit, I suspect it will work fine in Vista. Usually, choosing the OpenGL version of the video driver works the best for new video cards. I used to have problems with various video cards manufactured after the game was made, but I haven't had problems with newer, recently made cards or their drivers with Descent 3/Mercenary

You play very awesome ! Could tell me what kind of control to use ? I tryed PS2 joystick but it weird. Tryed Joystick flight, horrible to aim.

Keyboard ? It is?

Mouse it horrible to turn 360º horizontaly, but is easy to aim.

I´m asking it because you dont suffer to turn the mouse

Try playing this level on insane mode. It's really cheap. The bots with mass driver are like 100% accuracy.

I wonder why Descent-style 360 degree 3D movement didn't last into modern games--the only FPS's anymore are ground based, not air based. You know what would be sick? If they rereleased Descent on the Nintendo Wii. B-)

This game died because the vast majority of game players cant handle moving in 3D space. That said, playing this game online in Deathmatch mode kicks ass!

Yeah, people either called it a 'Doom clone' or hated it because they couldn't get used to spatial awareness in 360 degrees. Sigh.

And then there's people who think this is a flight sim. Um, no. I mean, honestly, sure, you hover, but the gameplay is NOTHING like any airplane/space sim. Since when do you circle strafe in a flight sim?

Sigh, does anyone still play this AWESOME FPS online anymore? I'd love to deathmatch, or even go through the co-op mode in D2. :D

@raymoohackuray well spoken, this game was ahead of its time without question (brings back fond teenage memories) its a shame that it never took off like Doom, Heretic, Quake etc etc etc (clone clone and more clones) because it was too hard for most people to master where they can't comprehend a TRUE 3D environment with all 6 degrees of freedom. If there was a descent 4 i'd be thrilled.

@raymoohackuray This was an awesome game, why dont thwey make games like this more ? Remember also on n64 a game called forskaen ? it was the same idea as descent only the spaceship you used was actually a sort of space boke. Very great game too but this type of game seems not to appear anymore :(

trouble with descent is you cant bank and move in three dimensions at once because it takes four keypresses unless you use mouse buttons for up/down strafe - even thats tricky.

Imagine really being able to move like a skitzo-dart while tracking any combination of moving targets...

@eddiedeath I used to use the little "hat" button on the top of my Sidewinder joystick to strafe around. Joystick is way better for Descent anyways.
