  • Back in the days when anchors only had last names....

  • I used to do security for the Chicago Bears for a few seasons. After every game in the tunnels Amy Freeze would hit on me. I was 18 ;)

  • and lol, would it have killed the announce to say their first names?

  • wow, Lester Holt was at WCBS in New York before this time and went back to New York after this to host Today

  • They probably thought that having like 34 televisions would be a good idea (the probably didn't contribute anything to the broadcast, except for a distraction)

  • was lester holt from nbc nighlly news there??hmm ^^)

  • Boy, she's wearing the pants on this broadcast...

    "Bill is off...Lester is in"

    To the point

  • @zbsx She sounds pissed off and that's why she belongs in the kitchen making sandwiches.

  • Damn, that intro was intense. Lol.

  • God Linda was so hot back then!!!

  • I think I see their rating problem--they don't stick with anything and keep changing the anchors, graphics, logos, and theme music.

  • It's the all-last name only newscast! I remember Linda MacLennan when she co-anchored the news in the early '80's on CJOH in Ottawa (the same station where Peter Jennings got his start), then later in the '80's she co-hosted "Canada AM" on CTV before moving Stateside.

  • Linda looks like she's in a hurry.

  • I take it these news anchors don't like to be called by their first names?

  • Sorry, you're gonna have to check the NMSA: This was from 1992:

"WBBM News Theme: Chris Crane. 1992-1994"

  • ...what else do you have to go by?

You weren't even alive in 1991.

  • then have them argue for you, because you really have nothing to back yourself up; unlike us, who have 2 things to back us up: the NMSA, and this vid:

    watch?v=saiykPqjJME&feature=related

Just saying you know someone who aggrees with you isn't enough to persuade us.

  • if you are telling me that never made it in 1992, what did? we can agree to disagree but i am 1000% sure it is 1992. the copyright credits say 1992.

  • no, its 1992. I have the videotape and the newscast to prove it.

  • a rather embarrassing era in broadcast news: the tabloid era of the 1990s. i wonder how many viewers lost their sight just turning on the news!

  • That is one scary, yet smokin' opening!

  • First, LOL @ that set, I mean WTF??? A bunch of TVs plastered on one side with a row on top?? I mean, get real here....the music by Chris Crane (WSVN fame) is cool, and again, Scott Chapin waking you up is neat, but that was the one thing that caught my eye...that set.....eek....

  • My guess is when people saw Lester Holt's moustache, they went "Bow Chicka Wah Wah!"

  • that is so coool i love the theme song and the news

  • A little too WSVN-like for a station that once had such a proud history...they even got the always over the top Scott Chapin to announce! Anyone else curious to hear how he says every day things?

  • WBBM also hired some WSVN people when the stration went tabloid.

  • Sorry, I misspelled station.

  • Scott Chapin: "Live! From WBBM-TV Chicago! Kurtis! MacLennan! McPherrin! Baskerville! This is Channel 2 News!"

  • I *love* this opening. I get the biggest kick out of how over-the-top it is! The music and the swooshes just adds to the over-the-top sense of urgency that seems to say "Listen up! Why you were sitting there watching "Dallas," we were covering the stories that keep you in the suburbs. This ain't your daddy's news, b*tch!"

  • This is back when Bill Applegate was running the station. He took a top notch news product and turned into tabloid crap. The result? Bill Kurtis and Walter Jacobson left. And the station become mirred in FIFTH place at 10:00pm, behind news on WLS-Channel 7, WMAQ-Channel 5, and reruns on WGN-Channel 9 and WFLD-Channel 32. And, despite several years of retooling, they're STILL trying to climb out of the basement

  • Not sure - I've been in Atlanta for the past bunch of years; last time I was up there, I didn't see her on the air...

  • MacLennan left because they did not renew her contact. I recorded that video and it was 1992 and not 1991.

  • Thanks for posting this vid. I used to have it (following a commercial from Bennigans!) but recorded over it like a dumb-a___. What ever happened to Linda?

  • A little too "in your face". I'm all for catchy theme music and nice graphics, but this went a little too far. I can see why they fell to last place.

  • ummm Chicago News has come a long way
