Good post. Best ever hurdler in my opinion. Had the finishing power to bury the best. Known as the Cob or the Freak.
Damn shame Boylesports churlishly took the Bula Hurdle away from the December card. Spoilsports more like!! I am about to lobby another course to take on the race.
Maybe not the best ever hurdler, but I think he was potentially the best-ever dual-purpose horse: he would have been a champion chaser if things had gone right for him. Very sad loss. Fair point about Boylesports: they'll give up their sponsorship soon enough, and so their short-term greed means the name Bula has gone. Shouldn't be allowed.
Warms my heart to to know there's somebody around to acknowledge the shameful greed and low class of that firm. Most courses retain time honoured names within a subsequent sponsorship. Not Boylesports though!! I contacted Mr Gillespie COC at Cheltenham and although he kindly replied he more or less said he had to respect Boylesports terms. I contacted them and they just asked if I wanted to open an account!!! I have not finished with this yet and when I get time will pursue it. Lowest of low.
Footnote to Bula. Like you say a great dual purpose horse and unlucky to get a bog and worst ever ground in 1975 Gold Cup abandoned after race when Ten Up ploughed through the mud. Bula was cantering 3 out. I remember it toying with Red Rum and The Dikler a couple of times at Haydock and Sandown but still advocate it was a great hurdler and can only think of Istabraq and Persian War in my time being as good. It just had that electric turn of foot. Who can forget Ben/Hedg hurd 1970 top weight win
