Whether that stress is necessary or not is down to the individual preference. Heel elevated versions are widely accepted, especially in this exercise as it allows for a more upright position to maintain proper spinal curvature.
@Chiefontheditty Reply above. This heel elevation is an exaggerated version of the wedge used extensively in Olympic Weightlifting shoes. One of the sports with the lowest incident of knee injury.
