As the title suggests, the protagonist was a "respectable" young lady. The change in lighting, the removal of her outer shirt and her change in demeanor indicate that she was then forced into prostitution. Most likely because her husband passed away and she needed to make a living, but that last bit is speculation on my part.
@GnomaticReverie I think your intepretation is quite right. It seems that at first she was trying to run away from something, hiding behind the curtains,and there was quite a struggle after she took her shirt off. Very emotional, and the dancer did a good job, which actually makes it very hard to watch this.

i think she's got great techniques but the choreography is unfortunately quite boring...
