  • peace

  • I'm related to him

  • @Yankeesiheart how are you related to him??

  • MICHAEL chased more snakes out of Eire than any saint cud have even hoped to - FACT- still love you mick .... rip x

  • @gavd84EIRE but sure they were already gone because st patrick got rid of them, they were gone long before collins time. hahahahahahah

  • The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long. Cut down at 31, Collins had lived the life men dream of and many never achieve! Such is the way of greatness.

  • Great song. Great movie. End of!

  • I'm sorry but who the fuck would dislike this??

  • @sausage6518 paisley

  • I think Sinead introduced this music to a lot of people. I hope my version stands up as well.

  • This may be the best version ever of this song!

  • Mick was a pure beashht!

  • Fuck dev go micheal collins

  • Michael Collins was the true hero.

  • im sorry st patrick but micheal collins is irelands saint, great leader and warrior,we tried 4 100s of years 2 remove the brits and along comes mick and he puts the brits on there knees.R.I.P MICK IRELANDS GREATEST HERO.

  • Fuck Éamon de Valera....

    Great Michael Collins!!!!

  • goose bumps

  • Great movie and the best song from Sinéad O'Connor

  • Sad Movie

  • Love This Song. Thumbs up

  • I always love a deceptive Rebel song. Mon Sinead.

  • @hearditman What do ya mean rebel song.

  • Shut up ye bunch of pricks and listen to the music! nobody gives 2 fucks about you or what you're saying!

  • micheal collins waht a hero but robbed by de velera

  • @MrRK3568 =D someone gets it!!!!!

  • Indeed historians have said that the Civil War wasn't really being taken seriously by either side until the killing of Collins. That a ricochet bullet unleashed the bitterness and reprisals. It was a pointless war that robbed Ireland of many of her future leaders, not least Collins and Griffin.

  • Civil Wars often broke out in countries soon after fighting a war of independence. The reason is that for so long people had settled their differences with guns and bombs rather than words. Irish people had been using weapons to settle their differences for years but prior to the Civil War the country had seen war for most of six years. They had gotten what they wanted through violence, why wouldn't it work again?

  • Why is there arguments over Dev and Collins? They were on the same side. They both wanted an independent Ireland, they both gave their entire lives to their country. Collins is credited for winning the war but often didn't know what was going on down the country until the British did. Dev was the last to surrender in 1916 but he's leadership and indecisiveness that week was also called into question. Both did great things for Ireland, but neither were perfect. They should both be celebrated.

  • o well do i remember the bleek december day , the landlords and the sherriffs came to drive us all away, they set me roof on fire with there cursed english spleen, ans thats another reason why i left old skibbereen.

  • Saor Éire Tríd an AE - Sionainne

  • If you knew Irish history at all you would know that your comment about De Valera is one sided and bias ,

    History graduate UL

  • @sirkenyard thank god at least someone here knows what there on about!!

  • ye shouldnt need to watch the movie to know about the rising or any irish history. theres thousands of great irish balads, rebel songs and the trad of coarse. we have some of the best writers and poets and our history in brief should have your celtic warrior blood pumpn through ye. triocfaidh ar la

  • @JoshFitzer in fairness. i would rather see people get their history from reputable sources rather than ballads or films. The culture of this island is rich in poetry and song, but if you want to understand political events, then read a book.

  • i dont tink you got my message, i was sayn that about the other comments, not myself.

  • @jethro081

    exactly

  • @jethro081 The only really good thing about a movie is if it gets you interested in the subject. THEN do your ownr reading and research. IF you have the money vistt the historical sites. I LOVE research, reading and digging for as much info as possable on a subject that interest me. No matter how good a movie may be it s not meant to be a history lession but it CAN spark your interest.

  • Micheal Collins, great Irishman. He should make us be proud to be Irish!

  • dev did his part for ireland but the sad thing is that it cost the life of a patriot

  • Eirinn le fada a bheith ina cuige naisiun aris! <3

  • your as free as the english ordinary people, works both ways :(

  • Oh i remember this song from Michael Collins from watching it for Junior Cert history class :) stuck to my head such a magnificent voice :O

  • Beatifull SOng !

  • @j2hig13 It is !

  • from a people that for seven hundred years the British had tried to eliminate, a man such as Michael Collins, "the big fella", a giant, arrives.

  • " The swan in the evening moves over the lake", Irish freedom.

  • what was that De Valera said? ......"history will be writen at my expence...." i think he was a good man that wanted what was best for ireland as well as M.C.

  • @phsgrad89 The quote I think you're referring to is :

It is my considered opinion that in the fullness of time history will record the greatness of Michael Collins and it will be recorded at my expense.

Its a quote he made back in 1966

  • @PhluterGoode : thank you. i seen the quote at the end of the movie but i forgot most of it

  • i lived through the troubles and i have no doubt that the republicans let the british take as much as they wanted in 1922 knowing full well that the protestant greed would incorporate land that they never could hold and so it fell out and the struggle continued but bertie ahern never said a wiser word...there is no such thing as a catholic cow or a protestant hospital bed..there are just cows and hospital beds...we all agree on this ...surely...or is there such a thing now as a fenian mortgage?

  • My great great uncle Sean Mac Eoin was the best man at Micheal Collins wedding. After the irish civil war he was sentenced to death by firing squad but got out of it because he was one of the main leaders of the IRA and DeValera wouldnt let him be killed.

  • @RYMetallicer Bullshit man, if you knew your history you would know that Collins died before his wedding, so obviously you are full of shite.

  • @MrDeclandeadly Right ok whatever Mr i know everything.Im sure you have photos of the wedding and shit?Well of course you do because your know everything and what not.....

  • There is -no- evidence that De Valera had anything to do with the assassination or any hint written or oral that he set up Collins by sending him to England and thus partitioning the North. The answer died with him.

  • Michael Collins you are a pure legend! R.I.P you should not have gotten shot u just wanted freedom for the irish! God rest you're soul! <3

  • @Mega123456xxx fair play! here here

  • Beautiful song

RIP all our great Irish heroes.

  • R.I.P The Big fella. the less said about the Dev the better.

  • @MrLiamConnolly rightly said devalera sold out Collins and the rest of country, he was a coward who only wanted the glory.

  • @supermanfanforever you could'nt be more wrong.Don't believe everything a film tells you.

  • @LIAM92048 trust me i do not base my historical opinions on a film. Everyone knows this film is biased towards Michael Collins. I base my assumptions on the historical facts. Numerous historians have criticised Devalera and his decision not to go to the treaty negoiations

  • @LIAM92048 trust me i do not base my historical opinions on a film. Everyone knows this film is biased towards Michael Collins. I base my assumptions on the historical facts. Numerous historians have criticised Devalera and his decision not to go to the treaty negoiations in England. It is well documented, look it up. And 'could'nt be more wrong is an inane suggestion when it comes to a persons opinion. Don't be so assumptious.

  • @supermanfanforever I don't need to look it up I know enough about about the treaty negotiations to know that de valera didnt go to them, which was a mistake on his part but to call him a coward and to say that he only wanted glory is rubbish.De Valera was one of the last to surrender on the easter rising, despite having a nervous breakdown and during the emergency he stood by his decision to stay neutral. That doesnt sound like the actions of a coward.Collins and De valera were great men.

  • @supermanfanforever And its assumptious on your part to think I didnt know about the treaty negotiations.

  • @LIAM92048 well judging from your previous comments theres very little to clarify.

  • ok lets face facts here people while ye'r all shittin on about nothin - Nobody ACTUALLY knows anything - were you there??? No! And get over it.

  • i live in the north of ireland, and went threw bombs guns and the britishs forces. the free staters wouldnt have a clue what the north is going threw now.. yous sold us out

  • @Flamer1976 Please dont comment on history because you clearly have not got a clue what the fuck you are talking about!! Words cant explain how much i want to find you and fight ya, you stupid piece of dumb shit!! Big Mike did the best he could do, its dev that sold us out!!

  • @MrLiamConnolly u obviously dont have a clue either about the negotiations so theres no point giving out to other people. if u researched it ud know that both collins and Dev made mistakes during the negotations. its the fact that collins died at such a young age he was glorified as a martyr. both were great men, Dev did so much for this ireland u cant deny that

  • @DenisM011 It's you thay hasn't the clue. Dev did fuck all. He was a coward that survived 1916 because he had an american passport. He should have gone down in history a legend just like Mick, but shall always be remember a coward and rightly so. He sent Collins over to england because he knew it was impossible to get the 32 counties back. So he'd have a scapegoat in Mick. The Irish people voted 3/1 for what Mick got........yet that wasn't good enough for Dev. Horrible prick........

  • @77pearljam you dont talk nonsense do you, your comment on dev was very interesting and all true in my opinion. rip the big fella

  • @77pearljam fuck all? u call dismantling the treaty and declaring a republic in 1949 fuck all? we would still be a dominion of england if dev didnt use the statute of westminister to destroy the treaty. and if u read my comment i said collins was a great man maybe dev did send him over as a scapegoat but others see it because they could refer back to him and not have to sign anything on the spot? and yes i agree with u dat dev shouldnt have gone against the peoples vote. ur completely biased.

  • @DenisM011 Actually they did have to sign it on the spot. They weren't sent over there as the preliminary group, they were the ONLY group. Dev and the Government gave them permission to sign when they felt they couldn't get anything better. The group that went did the best they could. Dev knew they wouldn't get anything more but he was also the most experienced negotiator and statesman Ireland had. He should have gone, Collins wasn't up for it, or to it. He knew that himself.

  • @AdamR2468 i know dat dey did have to sign on da spot but dev planned to make dem refer back to buy some time but dey were classified as "plenipatentaries" meaning dat dey had te power to sign documents themselves. And the government didnt give them permission lloyd george was growing frustrated with the breakdown in negotiations and threatend immediate war after december the 6th but collins knew the ira didnt have da supplies or manpower to continue fighting hence signing of da treaty

  • @DenisM011 Exactly, Dev designated them as plenipotentiaries himself. He knew what would happen. It is exactly because the British were getting annoyed that Dev should have gone. He was the only one who could handle them.

  • @AdamR2468 to be honest iv no problem with what ur saying because u can make a valid arguement unlike others who jus make random statements about him being a coward with little evidence

  • @DenisM011 Oh you mean the arguments that are based around what Liam Neeson or Alan Rickman did or didn't say in an historically inaccurate film? Never makes any sense to me.

  • @DenisM011 liam what are you talking about, michael made very little mistakes in his life, if he did he would net have m,ade it alive to the treaty. he was the most wanted man in ireland with the british empire was the most advanced in the world but he destroyed it. dev was actually an agent of the british empire according to some researchers, he was an american citizen or he would have been killed in 1916. michael collins was the the great one

  • @thebigfella221 an agent of the british empire? are u for real? collins was a hero no doubt about it im not sayin he isnt. how does being an american citizen make him any less of an irish hero? he was da last commander to surrender in 1916 but of course u knew dat id say. and wed still be a dominion only for dev dismantling da treaty. collins and dev are both heroes of ireland. dev knew dat wit collins death at such a young age he wud be remembered throughout time as a coward by people like u.

  • @DenisM011 denis dont try an be authorative on something that you know very little about, and you would be surprised what i know.!!!whos uglyt face was leering out a window at bealnablath pub the day collins escort arrived and asked for directions???? dev dismantled nothing and caused the cival war and played a big part in the ambush at bealnablath directly or indirectly he caused the overall situation.thats why he made that statment about history will remeber the greatness of<<im sure un kno

  • @thebigfella221 haha da fact dat u believe half of da crap in da film shows how much u know! and ur wrong agaain it was rory o connor and the irregulars dat started da civil war when dey took da four courts and held collins second in command jj o connel hostage. dev was wrong to walk out on da dail in protest tho. and have a oul look at a history book there and u might find someting about dev dismantling da treaty in 1932 when fianna fail took power

  • @DenisM011 dennis what has you so into eamon de valera come on wake up. i dont base my points on a film, the man who said he was at the window of the pub the diamond was infact an old priest who said it at a mass, i think i read that in fr pat twohigs book on the dark secret you should read it, but its quite thick and there are no pics in it so it migt not interest you dennise

  • @Flamer1976 You should have fought a little harder when the going was good down the South and not dragged your heals. Stop making yourself feel hard done by you little bollox.

  • @MichaelCollins1922 well good on ye mate :)

  • @MichaelCollins1922 I think this country would be in a entirely diffrent state if the big fella had lived long enough, But he done more than enough for this country. R.I.P Mick .

  • @supermanfanforever Yeah mate. You gotta point. I'm not actually Irish. I'm American. But I have a deep love for my Irish roots. Of the five people in the history of the world that I respect, Michael Collins is one of them.

  • Thanks For This Lovely Song !

  • Thanks For This Lovely Song !

  • @MichaelCollins1922 but you also have to remember Lloyd George threatned Collins with a immediate terrible war if he did not sign the treaty. I am an avid pro treaty and Collins devotee and believe who ever killed this amazing man should be ashamed.

  • @supermanfanforever Oh no I know. Trust me. I was merely saying that the King of England wanted an end to the war. But I do know that the war would have continued if the treaty was rejected. I was just solely focusing on King Geogre V, not Lloyd George. I love Collins, for he was a realist in this situation. It's a shame, for I would have really liked to see what Ireland would be like today if Collins had lived.

  • sum fukn man he was class urhh rhhr

  • he was a man of this times, its a different country now, way different from the land he knew. He is an insipiring figure & i wonder what he would do

The war is over lads, he and those like him fought for the foundation. They laid the foundation & others built on it, we have to prove ourselves like they did but this time not arms or force but we can contribute to the future. we can still inspire the world. that man can reat in peace nd we honour him by making this land as great as it should be.

  • @malcolmkav76 A wonderful sentiment. It is hard to judge even the comparitively recent past, the world has moved on as you suggest. The fight was well fought and was right for the times. I am proud that my forefathers stood shoulder to shoulder with yours in Irelands cause. I have fighting Highland and Irish blood in my veins and though forced to leave the lands they love my family settled in Glasgow and passed down their passion for these lands. That will continue. May prosperity return.

  • Collins was a legend, sold down the river by that American bastard Dev. Collins could have been a great leader but like so many cut down too young. It's amazing that he was written into Irish history as the traitor instead of the hero he was, but at least that has been remidied. RIP Michael Collins

  • @blarneykite this is not true. the movie michael collins, however entertaining, was incorrect in saying devolera killed mickey. it was really the king the british who is to blame

  • @ff75ef So, a secret team of British assassins killed Michael Collins in 1922? eh is that what your getting at? And please remember, that it was the British King who wanted a halt to the violence in Ireland, which was a major factor on why the Irish War of Independence ended the way it did.

  • Collins was a legend, sold down the river by that American bastard Dev.

  • He was Irelands jesus

  • a great man and we all agree a man all irish men can look up too.. my grandad went pro 32 counties and i know there is know way they would have done want they done if they knew how our country would end up... these were brave men and to be honest the richer half of ireland forget ...

Anyone know of anywhere I can buy just this one song?

  • @merrilyx4 You can find it on the album by The Chieftains, "The Long Black Veil" ;)) That's where I heard it first even before they made the movie, enjoy it...

FROM MEGAPOLLOCK

  • The politics of Micheal Collins and the politics of modern Ireland are two very different things. Micheal Collins wanted a united democratic (and fair) republic, which they fought for in 1916. But in 1921, he knew (as well as Develara) knew that they could never get it without agreeing to partition. All we want now is peace, and for it to stay that way, and thats what he would want.

  • @brabbitte

Mmm, bear in mind that the Unionists didn't want Partition either: Carson was dead against it! Partitiion was a compromise, imperfect yes, but compromises usually are!

What Partition allowed was the Ulster question to be sidestepped, not solved, but postponned indefinitely. I mean, no Staunch Republican would accept a solution that was not an All Ireland 1, and no Unionists would accept an Independent Ireland that included them!

That's still the basic impasse to a United Ireland.

  • the worlds most beautiful love song

  • cudnt give a fuck bout the politics - i love this song !!!!

  • Ah politics!!,,,why dont u all shut the fuck up and listen to this gorgous song!!

  • Michael Collins <3 National hero!!

  • My Mum was from Cork, she never let me forget about it, she was so proud, she is in a nursing home. Ive never lived in Corek, but I know where my heart liees

  • hed put the gun back into irish politics

  • Max Keiser: Irish govt slaves to IMF terror machine! What would Michael Collins

do today if he was around??????????????

  • Fuck all of your political bull shit...fuck all of your hate, resentment and provo muppetry. Amazing song, heartfelt performance.

  • i new we shouldnt have signed the lisbon treaty , but also we fucked up when we elected fianna fail , ive said it a 1000 times if ive said it once the irish goverment should be made up of independant tds all on a reasonably set wage

  • its my understanding that the Republic cannot afford to re-assume control over/ unity with NI, on the other hand Britain doesn't really want it as it eats up a disproportionate amount of the budget. in words, britain doesn't want it, Ireland cant have it (yet)

I look forward to a day when an island is unified, geographical, politically, and socially.

    PEACE

  • they are all turning in there graves to see the bastards up in the dail now, the sovereignity has been thrown away, a very black week in irish history!

  • I think for any Irish person, or for anyone of Irish ancestry in general, it's very hard not to be moved to tears when listening to this song; particularly this rendition. Its use its use in this film is very appropriate as there is a metaphor of sorts embedded in the lyrics. It has always been a dream that Ireland would be united together, one independent people and finally it was thought that at the beginning of the 20th century this would come about. In the song this is represented by the ..

  • @ChaosDynamics ... couple who had planned to get married "It will not be long love 'til our wedding day". I presume the feminine element in the marriage would be Hibernia - a representation of Ireland's culture and tradition. The masculine element is the land, the workers and the people. The marriage between the two would be a recognition of Éire and the independent of the land and people from Britannia. However, sadly, the man dies (however it was the other way around in the original lyrics) ..

  • @ChaosDynamics

... The death, of course, would represent the partitioning of Ireland and a people divided but the culture, heritage and tradition remains alive (the woman) and she still dreams that one day they will be both united again in true unity. "I dreamed last night ...". I know that the lyrics for this song existed long before the partition but this is just my interpretation. "It will not be long love until our wedding day", Ireland will be united again; one island - Éire, my love.

  • Tiocfaidh ar la

  • The British Govt and the British people never treated or thought of Northern Ireland as part of Britain. If what happened in Belfast in 1969 occurred in Glasgow or Manchester or London we would have been up in arms and outraged that our police where battering British citizens for demonstrating for civil rights. The Catholics where treated badly but so where the protestants as they were allowed to practise and enforce their bigotry, No protestant on the mainland (Britain) would have been allowed

  • Donegal raymie is a partionist free state bastard. Not to mention a west brit

  • @WestBritWatch

You know morons like you, would have found gainful employment in the Third Reich! You'd have been happy there, reporting on anyone who showed hints of free thought & failed to maintain "Standard Dogma"!

  • @DonegalRaymie201 your right to give an opinion even if you are a west brit, happy?

  • four people are very silly

  • DonegalRaymie201 wer did u hear that? wikipedia go fuk ureself

  • @jdxv7

Where did I heat what? (And Christ, can you not learn to spell!)

  • It is shameful that throughout history self-centred individuals will seek to attach there own twisted political sentiments to anything that will gain them the briefest spot of limelight. Whether it be someone else's religeon or in this case just a very beautiful and haunting song. We don't need your rhetoric to spoil the beauty... so hang your heads in shame for bringing your bigoted politics here.

  • Sometimes history is actually written by murderers. God bless Michael Collins! Ireland's greatest hero.

  • I agree with aranjumper1! this song is brilliant, and let's face it, the History of Ireland is full of turmoil and so... but still it is a great country which everybody likes! (and I include my homeland NI in this, which hasn't any second meanings)

Really, the Americans should stop romantizising the IRA, please, it's just wrong. (try watching something like 'Mickybo and me' and ye'll see)

  • 1921 was a turning point in our countries history it should never ever be forgotten>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>things never stay the same everything changes move with it but never forget your history

  • Happy birthday Michael Collins R.I.P 16 October 1890(1890-10-16) – 22 August 1922

  • @dazzis .2nd that, a true son of ireland..

  • Can people not just appreciate that this is a brilliant song and forget about the fookin politics!!

  • If ye all want to talk shite feck off there's plenty of other places on the internet to do it this one should be about this great moven tune!

  • @cobhlanger Yeah second that! Sometimes it gets stupid allright!

  • Some people see Collins as a traitor. Not at all.He got what he could. If it wasnt for the big fella, there still might not be a Republic.

  • Lol, I come here for the studio version of sinead's moved through the fair and find the inevitable vicious argument. I don't think you're going to sort out Irish history and politics in the youtube comments box. At least go out and gob off over a drink ffs.....

  • To a true Irish hero, the only man in 800 years to achieve 70,280 square km of Irish Freedom

  • @eirpoc too bad the island of ireland encompasses almost 85000 square km : /

  • @fatbap

I have a slight suspicion that if Collins hadn't been shot Northern Ireland's history would be recorded differently

  • He was a brave man.

If your think the Big Fella was right to sign the treaty, thumbs up

  • great
