Usually if I want to hear a band,I listen to that band. There are exceptional covers out there,but,this song takes "cover", to a different level! It not only shows respect and admiration to Iron Maiden, but it shows the broad,expansive talent of Dream Theater.
Oh, and FTR, for the Labrie haters, you know he was the first choice replacement after Dickinson left Maiden. So I think the IM guys think he is an excellent singer and was capable of filling Dickinson's shoes. Had James decided to not stick with DT, he would have ben IM's singer instead of Blaze Bayley! As well, he was also considered for Rob Halford's replacement after leaving priest.....two VERY heavy hitter vocalists and he was considered for both of their replacements....Just sayin'....
When will you people learn that with musicians of the calibre of IM and DT, there is not a "better"; it is only personal preference. Both bands have amazing musicians; they are just different. I personally like DT's creativity expressed in this cover. And being that members of each band are friendly with each other, I am sure the IM guys appreciated that creativity just as much as well as being honored as being a huge influence on DT.
First time I heard this cover just now. I like it. DT tried to do something different with one of Maiden's lesser known album cuts. I like Maiden and Dream Theater.

I think this is great! I love covers that creatively stray from the original, makes it more interesting to listen to, as you don't really try to compare. It's a real good way to honour the original band too, because it shows that you're not trying to out do them, but use their music to show how influencial they were in your own mucical creativity. The movie Spun has a great bluesy version of Number of the Beast in the intro. Worth a listen.

I have heard some pretty gay covers, but that definitely is the absolute gayest cover I have ever heard Gangland was a great song without all this Dream Theater bullshit
gangland is the most unappreciated iron maiden songs. it makes me feel a lot better to know that someone respects not only the song but the album as a whole enough to do a cover for each song.

I don't get some of you people. I know the vocal performance sux, but just listen to the music. By far superior to maiden's version, which is totally BLAND (in this particular song of course. I mean listen to the original solo, totally boring and stale, unlike this version.

everyone may listen to whatever they want to, and if you think DT is "fag metal" (it's actually prog-metal/rock) that's your opinion, but calling the band talentless is just silly. where do you find band members with more talent than in dream theater? I'd love to know since I'm a HUGE fan of music! maybe LaBrie isn't the world's best singer, but he's not bad, and the band wouldn't be the same without him. oh, and I don't think this cover is a very good one, even though the musicians are great.

I agree! Gangland really is one hell of a song, especially due to Burr's drumming. It's got a great drive and I prefer that song over some other, more well-known songs from the Number of the Beast. It's a hidden gem, really...

a couple of things. FIRST of all, what is all this shit about James LaBrie's voice? His voice is trained and fucking awesome. Secondly....this cover is incredible because THIS is how you cover a song....TOTALLY changing it. IF you play a cover staight...and dont fucking NAIL it...people will rip you apart because they are used to hearing it a certain way. This was original, genious, cool and different. Always amazes me that when a band actually dares to change a song there's always a groupd of guys going 'this isn't axactly the same as a song I like so it's crap'
We know Dream Theater can do almost identical Maiden covers, this was deliberately done to make it soft and mellow, it's a swing version of gangland for christ sake, of course it's not a serious cover.
If you want just plain bad cover go listen to a metallica cover of maiden, especially remember tomorrow

I don't get some of you people. I know the vocal performance sux, but just listen to the music. By far superior to maiden's version, which is totally BLAND (in this particular song of course. I mean listen to the original solo, totally boring and stale, unlike this version.
