Commonly referred to as "potato bugs," even though they do not prefer potatoes and are technically not bugs, they are also called niña de la tierra (child-of-the-earth), stone cricket or chaco. Believed by some to be fierce and poisonous, this nocturnal cricket is actually non-aggressive and possesses no poison glands, although its jaws can inflict a painful bite.
You can find them in their greatest numbers along the western coast, from Cananda down to Mexico. They enjoy cooler, humid/moist environments and are nocturnal, so your best bet is to look for them at night. They can also be found in other areas of the United States. That's all I really know about that.
They don't actually bite, they are 'munchers' and only try to burrow for protection. They pinch sometimes but it is very mild and can't break the skin.
As l already stated, there is but one true potato bug, that is the Colorado beetle which invades potato crops underground where potatoes grow, while all crickets are surface feeders, that eat the leaves and stalks of crops,a Colorado beetle to the untrained eye would pass as a strange looking lady bug but have nothing in common as a lady bug is a predator.
"Here are a number of folk tales regarding Jerusalem crickets which are simply untrue; first and foremost, they are not venomous. However, they can emit a foul smell and are capable of inflicting a painful bite - but neither is lethal, as some of the tales would suggest." Strait from wiki, yes they bite, no its no venomous.
I have had 'potato bugs' crawl on me numerous times. They are harmless and don't bite! They may pinch a bit trying to dig and hide. People so over-react out of ignorance to bugs that look strange. They are really cool creatures.
one of these was in my house i didn't know what the fuck it was, then a friend of mine said it sounded like a potato bug. i have never seen one of these before. that was the one and only time, but man that thing scard the shit out of me. thought it was some kind out mutated roach
