I had the pleasure of being here at Camp Carol in 69 . I was with the 36th. combat engineers. We build the under ground mess hall . It was when the first of the delayed fuse 122's were raining in on us. I wasn't there to complete the job thanks to some dumb fuck who didn't blow the damn whistle and instead just pulled the cord and fired a 175mm round right over my head . Thanks A--Hole !!! I was sent back to Camp Evans until I rotated out of that God forsaken hole of a country.
I PROUDLY SERVED MY COUNTRY IN THE 5TH INFANTRY DIVISION AND PASSED THRU CAMP CARROLL ON MY WAY TO FORWARD POSITIONS OF CAM LO AND CON THIEN IN THE NORTH BELOW THE DMZ. IF YOU WOULD HAVE SERVED THERE YOU WOULD KNOW THAT IT WAS A "FREE FIRE ZONE" TO ALL COMBAT UNITS IN THE AREA. THERE WERE NO VC, ONLY NVA REGULARS. 5TH INFANTRY, "C" COMP.1/61. . . .1968
@Micelli1947 You are correct there were mostly NVA in the area around the DMZ, however, we trusted no one, not even children in villages. Whenever we questioned villagers they would be quick to say, "no VC, no VC" they never said, "no NVA, no NVA." Whether they were VC or NVA, they were our enemy.
No one seems to remeber the depredations of the VC, like chopping off the arms of children who were inoculated by American medics, hiding handgrenades on children and making the walking bombs, murdering anyone who stood against them, whole families of government officials and villiage leaders.
@wilatemodel I wasnt surprized by your comments...but even though your info seems to come out of Apocalypse Now more than reality, I still ask you: Imagine your invaded by a force so superior than yours, and your trying to undermine the opponents moral, what would you do ? By the way, I'm Half American, with several of my ancestors having had their share of importance in the history of OUR country.
In war, there are no rights or wrongs....it depends on the color of your uniform .People die regardless whether they are young or old, good or bad.It has been like that since the beginning of civilization.I am living in one of the Asia's successful and vibrant countries and I am thankful for the British and other Commonwealth soldiers who in the 1950's till 1960's helped and sacrificed their lives for us.If not for them my country will like North Korea .ps I was in the army.
my grandfather told me he killed 75 american invaders he is a true hero to us because the american had all the best of weapons he also told me most of them were cowards who ran from them and cry like babys when captured he was not a communists he was just protecting his family and country from american murderers who killed women and childs and bomb villages full of inocents to make us afraid americas are the war monger terrorist trash of the world
@endracismguy Your grandfather is one man with one opinion. If you've never experienced war then you have only the opinion of others to base yours on. You express a strong viewpoint without having all of the facts from both sides, but I still respect your opinion; that's what we do in a free country. I suggest you do more research young man and broaden your own horizons. Take some time away from the Internet and experience life for what it really is. My opinion? Your grandfather was VC.
@jalimager it doesnt matter what he was he was fighting against an invading aggressor reverse the situation and what would you do to an invader who kills your family, friends ,neighbours and country men the trouble will you westerners is that you think we asians are a cheap race to kill for fun and we are not human, but i will tell you now we are more civilized than you bunch of corporate endorsed killers
@endracismguy Your view of Westerners is unwarranted. Your grandfather fought for a regime that continues to keep its people poor and limit their freedom; ask Vietnamese living in the USA. Look also at the middle eastern people rebelling against that very type of control. Vietnamese people will wise up too and rebel someday. I respected my enemy, but killed those who were trying to kill me. Your distorted sense of reality has apparently caused your anger. Get some therapy and learn to forgive.
@endracismguy I never killed a woman. I never killed a kid. I never killed a farmer, unless of course he happened to be a VC pointing a gun at me. What would you do? See, that's a generalized assumption you've made about all Americans. If you look at the humanitarian aid flowing into Vietnam, you'll see most of it comes from average people helping other the unfortunate people of the world. Grow up. You're immature and haven't a clue. End of discussion.
@jalimagerwhat about your assumption that they were all VC ive never killed anyone at all and have never invaded a country to force some poor farmer to defend his family ,if an invading army invaded the US (which is an out of control regime)what do you think will happen to them ........they would be annialated with no regrets the same as all of you should have been annialated any aggressor deserves this ..please dont try to justify your wrong doings you look rather silly
@endracismguy Thanks for the nice exchange regarding this subject. I also want to thank you for helping display your warped viewpoint on my YouTube page for all to witness, but in my last response to you I said, "end of discussion." Therefore, I will end it here and not respond to any further comments from you. Essentially, I've turned you off. Goodbye.
@jalimager but its not easy to turn off your memories of the murders you commited huh just keep reasuring yourself ...i had my orders and were fighting for freedom that will ease your conscience to some degree
@endracismguy Your grandfather was too busy sucking on Ho Chi Minh's dick in Hanoi. Your grandfather never seen an American and all he may seen was Uncle Ho's special gook sauce in his face. LMAO
I patrolled out of there as an Marine Infantry FO in Nov 1966. Echo 2/9. Left every night in the dark. Returned in the dark the next night, ate c-rats and picked up a new platoon and off again. Night after night! Had to sleep on the ambushes... Also was there north of Rockpile when JJ Carroll was killed on Mutters Ridge for which Carroll was named.
@bozermusic1 - Sorry, I never had the pleasure of meeting Jim Birchim, but many of the guys had nicknames and it was not uncommon to never knowing their real names.
Had to be very surreal to revisit a location like that. When you were young there you probably never thought you would be there when you were older, much less with your son. Thank you for your service and for making this.
How amazing! To return with your son....wow. Wonderful you made it, and great to return and help - marvelous......Was flying on WV-1 out of Da Nang in '72.
I got a tooth filled there, helluva place to get a tooth ache. I was there in July-Aug 1967 with Cco. 1/9. I see it's still windy up there, never forget trying to pee in those piss tubes and getting it blown right up in your face.
@allet020 Still very windy there but very quite and peaceful now. I'll never forget the crack of those incoming rounds. It was better to piss along the perimeter, shit in C-Rat boxes and throw them over the wire so Charles had to crawl through our shit to get to us. Thanks for leaving a comment and viewing the video. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your service as well.
I was at Camp Carroll in 1970, with A Btry (8" & 175mm) 1st/39th FA, XXIV Corp. From what I could see, the camp is virtually unrecognizable. I remember it had a fairly long road from QL9 to the main gate. Forty years ago and still so vivid. Thanks for toast!!
my fullest respect to u and all the americans who were in vietnam, thats coming from a 33 year old english lad, fascinated by that war, very intrigued by the vietnam war and my fullest respects and thoughts to the americans who served there. :)
Thank you very much for the video. I just got back from the areas around the DMZ where my father was in 66' and 67' with the 9th Marines. Very nice video and explanations . Happy Anniversary as well. Thank you for your service. Your payback is well deserved.

I was a few miles away at Khe Sanh in January of 68 with the 1st Cav divison.
You could hear those 175 for miles. It was a nightmare at both camps. My hat
go's off to all Marines who were there during that time. Great group of brothers.
Glad to be a part with the 1st Air Cav.
