  • Silent protest?

  • haven't watched this for 24 years. i remember that night on totp. lol. on of those childhood memories . love it x

  • Another good reason why good music, such as this, should _always_ be allowed to be live...

  • a little peek behind the veil of illusion so predominantly shoved down our throats day in, day out...

  • I think the same thing happend to nick hayward from haircut 100.

  • Why bother time on this when you can actually watch and listen to this extraordinarily beautiful song being performed by All About Eve elsewhere on you tube?

  • Type Wayne Hussey Julianne Regan Curios into the YouTube search and you can find a sampler of the forthcoming album. Thanks.

  • I hope they sued totp!!!

  • They requested to play live, but Totp wouldnt listen, so she didnt sing.

  • @OriginStudioFilms that's not what happened at all

  • @Hawkingtron Still, a great band never the less.

  • I originally thought they were protesting lipsyncing & playing, like all those other bands; Nirvana, Iron Maiden, Muse, etc.; I was disappointed when she tried to follow along with it.

  • FAAAAAAAAAKE ;)

  • Miriam Hopkins meets Dana. Folkie tosh

  • I bet Julianne Regan could have strangled the BBC for this.

    Remember what Pete Waterman said?

"Kids couldn't give a monkey's about pop stars singing live. All they want to see is their idols performing to their songs on TOTP. They don't care if they mime!"

    Prat.

  • i don't know if i am right but are they mimeing

  • Fantastic group and song......................the technician responsible was hopefully shot!

  • @Nick13AOR I think the technician was given a medal for exposing compulsive fakery and mimery on the show that the 'artist' didn't have a say in. Note 'artist' is their proffesion.

  • By the way: I hear steel string while seeing nylon strings.

  • @MarijnvdZaag

Duh, yeah they were miming. Just call me Sherlock.

  • I like the way the audience start clapping at 1:20 when the sound starts being played in the studio!

  • The following week, TOTP invited them back to play the song live, to apologise for this. They appeared, played live, and were spine-tinglingly awesome. The following week the song sailed up the charts... :)

  • Grandissima cantante, brano dolce, delicato, soft...davvero bravi!!!

  • i saw this happen...it was just like this on live tv...

  • Please don't think this was the bands fault. Apparently they couldn't hear the track that we hear on the television. Though also 'apparently' according to the shows one time producer, there was 'no policy' on miming and it was upto the individual artist to choose. How true that was and to which time frame it refers is ambiguous. Either way, whoevers fault, it was Epic fail but makes for great TV.

  • NOOOOOOOOOOO! OH GOD WHYYYYYYYYYYYY! She even sighed half through the fucking song!!! THIS IS A SHOCKER!!!

  • that's what happens when you lipsync

  • Ha! Ha! Ha! Just shows what a crap group these two made - for 17 year olds and nothing more

  • Tragic really..

  • good job she was wearing loads of white foundation,, she must have been really blushing under all that.!!

  • Ironically, she mimes really well.

  • Oh dear, i remember that, os embarassing but they did return and do it live

  • fave band !!

  • Bet they felt a little bit silly sat up there at first, lol.

  • How to fuck up a great song, Go on TOTP and sit there cause you can't hear your song, Still it's funny when there shaking there heads, Cracks me up everytime, Great song.. Thanks for posting this vid.

  • @TheJellybaby1988 - their, not there, dumb idiot

  • @SirBounder Ok who the hell is sitting waiting to mime to the f@cking music dip shit

  • I remember watchin this at the time...me and me mate was pissin ourselves laughin lol

  • @mudman1881 - Intsead of laughing, maybe you should have been in English class, learning that when you speak in plural (me and my mate, which should have incidentally been written as 'my friend and I') should be 'were' laughing, not was laughing.

  • @SirBounder LMAO What a tosser you are!!! this is youtube not a fuckin english lesson! Do you moan at everyone who uses text terms to communicate via mobile phone awell lol? or are you just to much of a borin loser that you don't recieve any texts?? Not that it's any of your business but I have a degree in English lit, so fuck right off lol! (oops sorry I mean laugh out loud)

  • @SirBounder - Bounder, I loathe you and all you stand for.

  • @SirBounder Ha you sp. and grammar nazi freak. INTSEAD WTF IS THAT??? Yes everybody makes mistakes, do you really think people care about how they write on YT? Your wasting your time, they don't. I see the standards of language failing too but INSTEAD of having a go at everybody why don't you do something constructive, like free school at your own time and expense, for some ppl that do want to learn, you sound like a good teacher, though even you could take a lesson in humility once in a while.

  • When was this performance? I am from Germany and don´t watch TOTP.

  • @Uthlander This performance was from August 1988. All About Eve were invited back to perform the song again the following week as a consolation. TOTP is no longer airing now since 2006.

  • @mickeytipp - 'was' invited back, not 'were' invited back. The band is singular, not plural

  • she handled it really well

  • Still a really nice song though, methinks.

  • They performed it live the very next week and it sounded better than the original.....quality !!

  • She looks like she is ready to start crying. What an embarrassment it must have been!

  • I remember seeing this and thinking that TOTP had played the wrong song.

  • It was a chart show with people lip syncing whats the big deal? The US had Bandstand, Australia had Countdown.

You forget that lots of bands WANTED to mime to promote the single they had spent hours in the studio getting just right. The ridiculous thing was how the Musicians Union insisted that artists re-record their singles for the show and then mime to THAT version, even though it was usually vastly inferior to the original and totally unrepresentative.

  • Reminds me of when Hendrix was on TOTP and they played Simon Smith and his Amazing Dancing Bear by Alan Price instead of whatever it was (Burning of the Midnight Lamp?). Really cool, he just smiled and said - Man, I don't know the words to this one - sheer class! Is it on YouTube?

  • @BenZaniline Chances are the performance you're talking about would have been in March 1967, which would have meant Hendrix was probably performing 'Purple Haze'. Unfortunately there is very little totp footage of this era still in existance, so chances are it was probably wiped...

  • great great band and great song. They could have played this live any day but weren't allowed to. Incompetence by the Beeb on two counts!

  • ..agreed...on three counts!

  • Reminds me when Fairport Covention wre on TOTP miming to Si tu dois partir...one of them played the fiddle with a french loaf and another wore a t shirt with MIMING printed on it

    Jim

  • Ah yes ... shame if that's all they're remembered for, it's an amazing song. QV also Nirvana's TOTP performance of Smells Like Teen Spirit - from a later era when their policy was that the singer sang live to a backing track, and Kurt Cobain sang it in the style of Morrissey as a protest.

  • I was lead to believe this was a protest at BBC's anti live pollicy. I did see it live , a great song.

  • This promoted MTV like you wouldn't believe.

TOTP held its head high on the lie of live performances.

This killed off the credibility of any live music TV performance in Britain and therefore made MTV possible and popular.

Please apply for a tin foil hat if you think this was deliberate, nothing more than arrogant incompetence.

  • Such a beautiful, beautiful song. Wonderful.

  • I actually remember watching this when it was broadcast. Fucking stupid BBC and their miming policy. At least play the music properly!!!!!!!!!

  • Lovely Julliane!

  • the shame!!

  • this was a blessing in disguise -because bbc put there hands up to this cock up they were let on the show the following week and that helped the single to go top 10 there biggest hit EVER HIT

  • Oh dear..... :(

    Still, it's a great song

  • Brilliant! Never thought I'd see this again. Love the band.... Julianne... hello :)

  • As far as I know on totp the artists weren't allowed to mime to their original recording because of musician's union rules but they could mime to a recording they had made in the studio earlier, strange but true. That's why the lesser talented, Milli Vanilli I'm looking at you, would just send videos.

  • You're wrong, TOTP essentially forced people to mime. You seriously believe a band as good as All About Eve would need to mime?

  • Don't agree it made them famous the song speaks for itself.Looks like a genuine mistake but''tounge in cheek''now as we look back at how terribleTOTP was as a Mime show, this illustrates how to baffle a good band not used of mime,a band that can play but not mime that is unlike todays dance routines & mime which are common practice with groups calling themselves bands.>Classic track influrenced by Led Zeppelin 4(symbols)?Why doesn't Robert Plant duet with Julianne Regan? That would Rock!Imagine?

  • Such a shame because she sounds near studio perfect when singing this song live!

  • do it live first time! not live there was s drum kit to mic up

  • not bad. was she singing live, or was it lip-synced?

  • Watch it again. She doesnt open her mouth to start with except to grin.

  • i know, i need to work on my jokes i think lol

  • I remember this like it was last week. Felt so bad for them - but the following week when they were allowed to do it live more than made up for it!

  • i seen this at the time. have to agree with ladymoonlight37, brilliant band, juliannes voice is that of pure magic, one of the best bands i have seen live

  • I still think Nirvana deliberately blowing it when they had to mime " Teen Spirit" on ToTP was classic!

  • thats what happens when a brilliant band like this arnt left to do the job live. all about eve are outstanding live.

  • Very true, I savour any live material I have with Tim Bricheno, he deserves some credit for his skill, both in composition and playing. Not forgetting Julianne though!

  • Oh! I so so wish i saw them live! you're lucky friend!

  • @ladymoonlight38 - All About Eve is a group, therefore it should be in singular form. You should say that it was left, not when they were left

  • Spot on. AAE will live on in my memory. TOTP was scrapped because of the plastic manufactured bands that later filled the charts and couldn't perform live.

  • Wonderful TV balls-up. If you're going to get caught out pretending to play guitar, you may as well do it live on TV with a terrible king charles spaniel hairdo.

  • Fantastic song. Nevermind the incident.
