Jason - profits are necessary to reinvest in the economy. It's the driving force behind technological change, without it we get stagnation (Soviet economy is a perfect example of this). What do you define as working? Do you believe the capitalist system is working to the benefit of the people? Inherent in its system is the drive for profits, making companies seek lower wages hence China's current role in the world. Cyclical recessions are purely symptomatic of a capitalist system. To claim "hundreds of millions" were killed by communism is a flat out lie. Totalitarianism and Dictatorships, and greed/power are at the heart of that.
