O Come on.. Take a look at the cyclist you are overtaking. Thats how you drive a bike. But I get it.. You didn't have anything to post this week so you had to provoke somebody again..
Man, get out of the middle of the road, just like the other cyclist you passed (and most other cyclists). By the way, the car passed properly and posed no treat to you.
"The UK law says that if a queue of cars builds up behind the tractor the driver should pull over to let cars pass."
Now... I'm not saying it applies to this video, but quite often I have seen cyclists holding up great queues of traffic... So should they too have to pull over if they hold up traffic?
also, censoring youtube comments is the measure of what kind of a man you really are: a morally weak and wimpy whinny child, ridding his trikey down the road.
Love this. stuck at reds but blame the bike. The ultimate was when a guy gave me the honk-and-floor-it to get around me while I was coasting to a red light. He drove his durango up the ass of a penske moving van and nailed some poor couple moving in from out of state. While waiting for police the guy goes on about how traffic has gotten so bad and they need to do something. "Yeah, they need to stop giving driver's licenses to assholes like you." The couple laughed. He stopped talking after that.
where was your lifesaver check when you moved more to the right to overtake the cyclist??? if you had you may have seen the car and as you didn't this MAY have been why he used his horn....to make you aware of his presence!!!
Look people dont want to drive around at your pace, if you cant go with the traffic then let them pass, the reason you have so many videos like this is because its all your rules instead of give and take
@2wheelsteve I agree, sometimes a car honks at me and I realize I've been climbing and my concentration lapsed and I've taken the middle of the lane for a long time and someone behind me should just be allowed to drive on. Will they get stuck at a red ten seconds later? I guarantee it. But let them learn the lesson when she see me ride past them 10 seconds later, not by arguing about it.
Magna Tom is a pain in the arse. At the end of the day there are bad drivers out there and we all know that. But......I can't say that his cycling is always perfect. Half the time his camera is looking in the other deirection which suggests to me he is not focused on the road ahead. He appears to spend more time looking for incidents. I hate this sort of attitude and I can assure you it will get you into bother. He also pulled out at the roundabout to quick for a cycle.
have read ur answer and cant see why u were in the primary road position for so long before the cyclist. i agree with ur theory but not ur practce of it
There are 4 good reasons to take primary here. Junction - best not to be at the edge here. Parked cars - look at one of my most recent videos on that subject. Pinch point - Always best to get in position in advance to avoid swerving etc, and the cyclist, whom I was about to overtake safely.
You really need to CALM the hell down. You ARE looking for fights.
"Primary road position" pisses faster vehicles off. When they load you onto ambulance will you still be chanting "but i was in the primary road position". I understand the concept of the road position as i ride a motorbike in london. But honestly mate, do yourself a favour and just be a little more defensive, you cant afford to fight with 2 ton vehicles who are (and i agree) driven by assholes.
Dont think i had a question there. Ive some now, hehe
Can you stop these people driving like pricks and dangering your life?
Does it alleviate the situation if you rode a little closer to the left and let cars pass?
Can you explain to me why you aren't in the "secondary positon" when you aren't in a position to overtake the cyclist until you are across the bridge (0:22)?
Mate, i give way to cyclists in traffic, but even i'd loose my patience in this particualr example.
Agreed, you didn't ask a direct question, but I have already commented on some of the points you have raised in my FAQ. Have you read it?
No I can't stop bad driving. That is exactly why in certain trouble spots I cycle assertively. Allows me to be seen better prevents some daft manouvers and provides me with escape strategies.
Cycling close to the gutter may reduce irritations but it will increase the risk of a serious situation where I have no escape.
I am in a primary position because I am aproaching a blind hill (himp in the road). It would be dangerous to overtake on approach, therefore I discourage overtaking by my road position. Is this not reasonable?
I am a motorcycist, I used to ride a bicycle and after that a scooter so I know all about road positioning, people like this have no experience, the amount of time I was overtaken riding my scooter at 30 in a 30 was rediculous and then riding past at the next set of lights was the best bit. Good on you mate! You have alot more admirers than haters and alot more road sense than alot of car driver. When you are on 2 wheels you have to be alot more concious of your surroundings.
I've lost count of the number of times someone has overtaken me when I've been going at the speed limit and they are level with me later. Accelerating fast, breaking hard & overtaking constantly does not make you gain more ground- it just pushes your fuel bills up. Peeps who do this are fools who are large in the car department and small in others. Good for you filmmaker- PMSL when u caught up with him at the lights! Overtaking got him really far didn't it? LOL!
I agree with everything you have said! The amount of times where I've been cycling at the speedlimit on mostly residential roads and I get cut up by a bunch of idiots in a golf is rediculous! Keep up the good work Magnatom
Pathetic cyclists like yourself can pee off mate. You do NOT pay road tax you do NOT take out insurances of any kind or contribute towards the road/highway maintainance so what gives you the right to hog the road for yourself? the Avensis should have splatted u mate!
Road tax -- abolished in the 1930's, so I doubt you ever paid it either -- roads funded out of general taxation, which everyone, even non motorists pay. You are a complete and utter idiot.
What's so pathetic about these fool drivers who absolutely can't wait to overtake cyclists, is that they'll overtake even where they should be easing-off because of congestion, traffic lights or other obstruction. I find they often have to brake rather harder than necessary to stop, because they are going faster than they should be.
Drivers like this complain about the cost of fuel and drive like this, when they could save fuel and money by driving intelligently.
Maybe you should of drafted the other cyclist for a small while, and then looked behind (or mirrors)? then overtook when no cars were overtaking you. I didn't notice you checking behind you by looking or mirrors, maybe you did but it wasn't portrayed on camera well.
Yeh, ive started to shield cyclists more now. If you follow them at their pace untill the road widens, or more lanes appear. At best, you save the cyclist from injury, at worst, you stop other motorists buzzing them and annoying the cyclist.
I feel like some sort of motorist traitor here, but do we need to have areas where, because the lanes are so narrow and traffic is so heavy, that no overtaking is allowed unless you are passing a stationary object.
I enjoy going mountain biking so I'm not against bikes in any way but I simply can't stand bikes on the road. Your just too damn slow, it's nearly as bad as being stuck behind tractors. There should be cycle paths built beside roads or something in this day and age and I'm not trying to blame you for this, it's the governments fault... well maybe I'm blaming you a little... GET OFF THE FUCKING ROAD!!
you moved into the primary position much too far before the slower-moving cyclist. i think you knew the car behind would like to pass and, selfishly, you blocked him. magnatom, you are an embarrassment to your fellow bicyclists.
U are a sad man! have u not got anything better to do with your life, take it u have no mates? i think u purposely go out there tryin to get on peoples nerves and its obv u cant resist makin comments and are so proud of your camera, hope i see u cos i'll whip that camera off your helmet and bounce it off your head if u point it at me!
I used to have sympathy for you at first Magnatom, but I`m afraid I now think you`re a sanctimonious prick. I ride a bike, a powerful motorcycle and a car, and for 35 years I`ve driven large vehicles. I`m not a perfect driver, and don`t claim to be, but if being on the road pissed me of as much as it seems to piss you off, I`d walk. But even then you`d probably gripe about that. Get a bloody life, before your attitude ends the one you`ve got now.
In most of your videos you are in the right and i admire you for refusing to be bullied by car drivers. On this occasion you could do with getting over to the left.
What and knock the cyclist over that I was overtaking?! Look at my primary or secondary video for my explanation of why a primary position is vital for this road.
You are riding primary way before overtaking. I watched your video on primary riding. If you had been riding primary, bullies like that white van driver still would have tried to squeeze round you. It wont stop bully drivers risking our lives. On the other hand it might annoy the majority of drivers who give enough room when riding secondary. Still i think your general point that riders should use primary more often is a very valid one as it is reclaiming our equal right to the streets.
I completely disagree with that. Taking primary just to prove a point is completely the wrong reason. I only take primary for my own safety. Trust me taking primary here prevented this 'chap' from overtaking on the brow of the hill, where it would have been most dangerous!
Sorry, but my experience with biking in most of Europe, and various parts of Canada has never brought to my attention the primary position as you talk about. If a cyclist with over 30 years experience cycling has never heard of it, how do you expect commonly ignorant drivers to know that, if it was indeed true? Your overtaking is completely blown out of proportion, both because of your position, and your lack of approaching traffic behind you. Defensive biking!
If you resort to calling names (very childish!) that suggests you don't have anything worth saying. Is the discussion too difficult for you to follow?
Have a read of cyclecraft by John Franklyn. His book is recommended by the national cycling standards course in the uk (bikeability). Remember, the roads are very different in different countries. For example, the Netherlands and the UK are like chalk and cheese!
What was the numbnut driver saying to you? I get about 5 of those a day on my commute and my commute is only 14km round trip I cannot stand these drivers you both made it to the stoplight at the same time what did he gain by overtaking you? perhaps the last cheeseburger from the fathouse.
The idiocy is (1) unnecessary use of horn when it's obvious you're overtaking another cyclist - intimidates and says "I am a bully", advertising intent/likely to cause trouble (2) dangerously close overtake (3) only to join the traffic jam a few seconds sooner and meet you again. I would keep further left myself but it's up to you where you ride. There is no excuse for this driving.
Magnatom, I very much enjoy your documentation of correct riding styles.
Do you have a strategy in mind when you speak to these ignorant drivers? I think it is a mistake to argue the rightness of your lane position to them. They would easier understand Greek than your point of view.
I think you should simply repeat over and over: "You have an obligation to pass with due care." This duty rests on the overtaking motorist even if the other guy is violating the law. Tailwinds!
When I remember to I ask them if they have passed their driving test. I then ask them, would they have driven like that in their test. That often catches them out. If they say yes I just continue saying, would you expect to pass then? etc.
Is the primary road position the middle of the lane?
Thought cyclists were supposed to be 1 metre from the kerb? You were going over a blind crest and forcing other traffic to either slow to a crawl (which an awful lot won't do) or move into oncoming traffic in a busy bus route.
Yes it is in the middle. It prevents dangerous driving and provides me with an escape route (to my left) if required. The last place I want to be is next to the railings on the left (Cyclists have died by being crushed).
Drivers just assume that cyclists should be next to the curb. Properly trained cyclists will take their roadspace when required.
Indeed. Our biggest problem is that drivers think we take this position out of spite. They can't see things from our perspective. Maybe a week road cycling should be part of the driving test :-)
LOL! I wasn't planning on stopping by the car. I only decided to stop when he started swearing at me. Though to some extent you are correct. We don't have as brakes as powerful as a car. No ABS for bikes yet.... ;-)
He endangered my life. I think my response was very polite when I spoke to the 'gentleman'. Do you know what primary and secondary position are? Do I change in this video, if so let me know where. Have you ever swore at another driver, do you swear in your videos?
magnatom, thanks for a great laugh. I support your "primary position" cycling completely. I use it often and recognize that those who wish to debate you are simply under-educated, a more polite way of saying ignorant.
When you shouted as you did, I laughed solidly enough to have my wife wonder (again) what I'm seeing online.
There seems to be one constant in all these near misses, The halfwit cyclist who is filming them. I think the only way You will ever be happy is if people like Me who pay £1200 a year each for 2 trucks plus my private car tax continue to pay it to build and maintain the roads, and then abstain from using them so that cyclists can do as they like, thank god some cyclists conduct themselves more professionally than you
Actually you pay an emission tax not a road tax so what you pay has nothing to do with bulding roads. Its only a shame halfwits like you can never understand this.
It's quite scary that someone with three vehicles like yourself has absolutely now idea about how cyclists should position themselves on the road -- there was nothing wrong with this cyclist's road position, the error was on the part of the impatient motorist
PS everyone (even those without cars or trucks) pays for roads - do a bit or research before you post
Someone else has already mentioned the tax issue and how you're not paying for the road through car tax (the local council pays for it with council tax). However, it is worth pointing out that cyclists are shockingly enough PEOPLE and by driving recklessly near them, contravening the Highway Code you WILL endanger their lives.
I cycle, and I drive. I have seen some terrible cyclists on the road, but this chap acted reasonably and safely. The driver did not.
There is some truth in that. However, if you were to go along to nationally recognised training this is how you would be told to cycle.
The primary road position (read Cyclecraft!) prevents dangerous overtaking. It did on the bridge. My only mistake here was not holding a strong enough primary after the bridge.
The primary position also provides an escape route. If a car puts me in danger I have the option of moving into the space I have created. If I cycle close to the gutter I have no escape route. Google the cyclechat forum. I'm there (same username). We discuss this form of cycling a lot there.
I just got in, drenched, and i have tried the primary on a few occasions on the way home; St Vincent St, Gt. Western Rd etc. I didn't get any horn blasts!
It was very wet. Great fun! Generally I don't have any problems. Just occasionally you get someone who can't wait 15 seconds. Most drivers are actually ok. You just seem to remember the muppets!
I had a car beep at me a month or two ago but I caught it up with at the lights and then I got well in front of it again. I was doing about 25 mph and he never caught me up again due to the traffic only averaging 20 mph. I love it when that happens lol ,Getting one over on frustrated and impatiant car drivers!
I've seen it a million times, but it kills me every time the same as the first.
"Nice to meet you then!"
I gave you an extra star for not punching the car on your second pass. Very admirable restraint, since you could have easily pedaled away in any direction afterward. I wonder if you can do anything with the clear video of his auto tag?
What a stupid overtake! IMO a selfish and impatient driver, overtaking dangerously when there's no point to the overtake. He didn't even save himself a second, since he got held up in the queue just ahead. Shame on you.
Magnatom, you were exactly right in your road positioning. Driver needs to go and read the highway code as well as learn some patience and tolerance IMO.
O Come on.. Take a look at the cyclist you are overtaking. Thats how you drive a bike. But I get it.. You didn't have anything to post this week so you had to provoke somebody again..

I`m not a perfect driver, and don`t claim to be, but if being on the road pissed me of as much as it seems to piss you off, I`d walk. But even then you`d probably gripe about that. Get a bloody life, before your attitude ends the one you`ve got now.

Hi merlinbus
Just out of interest - when did you express any sympathy for magnatom?
nickperry68 4 years ago
In most of your videos you are in the right and i admire you for refusing to be bullied by car drivers. On this occasion you could do with getting over to the left.
Darrenov 4 years ago
What and knock the cyclist over that I was overtaking?! Look at my primary or secondary video for my explanation of why a primary position is vital for this road.
magnatom 4 years ago
You are riding primary way before overtaking. I watched your video on primary riding. If you had been riding primary, bullies like that white van driver still would have tried to squeeze round you. It wont stop bully drivers risking our lives. On the other hand it might annoy the majority of drivers who give enough room when riding secondary. Still i think your general point that riders should use primary more often is a very valid one as it is reclaiming our equal right to the streets.
Darrenov 4 years ago
I completely disagree with that. Taking primary just to prove a point is completely the wrong reason. I only take primary for my own safety. Trust me taking primary here prevented this 'chap' from overtaking on the brow of the hill, where it would have been most dangerous!
magnatom 4 years ago
Sorry, but my experience with biking in most of Europe, and various parts of Canada has never brought to my attention the primary position as you talk about. If a cyclist with over 30 years experience cycling has never heard of it, how do you expect commonly ignorant drivers to know that, if it was indeed true? Your overtaking is completely blown out of proportion, both because of your position, and your lack of approaching traffic behind you. Defensive biking!
BeeRich33 4 years ago
i agree entirely. Magnatit thinks he owns the damn road.
hawkwinddave 3 years ago
If you resort to calling names (very childish!) that suggests you don't have anything worth saying. Is the discussion too difficult for you to follow?
magnatom 3 years ago
Have a read of cyclecraft by John Franklyn. His book is recommended by the national cycling standards course in the uk (bikeability). Remember, the roads are very different in different countries. For example, the Netherlands and the UK are like chalk and cheese!
magnatom 3 years ago
What was the numbnut driver saying to you? I get about 5 of those a day on my commute and my commute is only 14km round trip I cannot stand these drivers you both made it to the stoplight at the same time what did he gain by overtaking you? perhaps the last cheeseburger from the fathouse.
elgeneralsv 3 years ago
Maybe you could have waited until it was clear to overtake the other cyclist...or maybe it's you who has a " must overtake mentality " ?
bluesishere 3 years ago 5
This twit ALWAYS cycles in the middle of the road. Don't know why he HAD to overtake the other treehugger on the bike.
peterthepervert 3 years ago
Treehugger! LOL! Do you drive a Ford Cortina by any chance! I think you are a relic from the 70's! LOL!
magnatom 3 years ago
The idiocy is (1) unnecessary use of horn when it's obvious you're overtaking another cyclist - intimidates and says "I am a bully", advertising intent/likely to cause trouble (2) dangerously close overtake (3) only to join the traffic jam a few seconds sooner and meet you again. I would keep further left myself but it's up to you where you ride. There is no excuse for this driving.
mailpauljonescouk 4 years ago
Magnatom, I very much enjoy your documentation of correct riding styles.
Do you have a strategy in mind when you speak to these ignorant drivers? I think it is a mistake to argue the rightness of your lane position to them. They would easier understand Greek than your point of view.
I think you should simply repeat over and over: "You have an obligation to pass with due care." This duty rests on the overtaking motorist even if the other guy is violating the law. Tailwinds!
ddallass 4 years ago
When I remember to I ask them if they have passed their driving test. I then ask them, would they have driven like that in their test. That often catches them out. If they say yes I just continue saying, would you expect to pass then? etc.
magnatom 4 years ago
Is the primary road position the middle of the lane?
Thought cyclists were supposed to be 1 metre from the kerb? You were going over a blind crest and forcing other traffic to either slow to a crawl (which an awful lot won't do) or move into oncoming traffic in a busy bus route.
Seriously man, get over!
christophereeles 4 years ago
Yes it is in the middle. It prevents dangerous driving and provides me with an escape route (to my left) if required. The last place I want to be is next to the railings on the left (Cyclists have died by being crushed).
Drivers just assume that cyclists should be next to the curb. Properly trained cyclists will take their roadspace when required.
magnatom 4 years ago
I'm with you on this one. YOU were overtaking the other cyclist.
I see far too many moped drivers who hug the kerb - fair play they're letting the traffic pass but only at their own peril.
Often better to get a dominent road position for safety.
svengalie 4 years ago
Indeed. Our biggest problem is that drivers think we take this position out of spite. They can't see things from our perspective. Maybe a week road cycling should be part of the driving test :-)
magnatom 4 years ago
Are your brakes that shit that you cannot stop by the side of the car? LOL Maybe you are the danger on the road.
before67 4 years ago 2
LOL! I wasn't planning on stopping by the car. I only decided to stop when he started swearing at me. Though to some extent you are correct. We don't have as brakes as powerful as a car. No ABS for bikes yet.... ;-)
magnatom 4 years ago
Yes(I admit) I swear in my vids!!
Know quite a lot of positions, on the road and more interesting places ;-)
Have swore at other drivers for making me look like a bad driver in a bus, and for endangering up to 100 peoples lives.
Cyclists have been included in the tirades of abuse.
Believe that anyone wanting to use a public highway must have a test to fully understand rules/regulations.
m4rkmckay 4 years ago
Verbal abuse?? That is a very good way to deal with a situation(note the sarcasm).
Moving from the Primary position to the Secondary position so frequently as you do in all your videos, is it any wonder people get impatient???
m4rkmckay 4 years ago
He endangered my life. I think my response was very polite when I spoke to the 'gentleman'. Do you know what primary and secondary position are? Do I change in this video, if so let me know where. Have you ever swore at another driver, do you swear in your videos?
magnatom 4 years ago
LMAO! what a twat he was!
littlebigman909 4 years ago
magnatom, thanks for a great laugh. I support your "primary position" cycling completely. I use it often and recognize that those who wish to debate you are simply under-educated, a more polite way of saying ignorant.
When you shouted as you did, I laughed solidly enough to have my wife wonder (again) what I'm seeing online.
Keep up the great work!

There seems to be one constant in all these near misses, The halfwit cyclist who is filming them. I think the only way You will ever be happy is if people like Me who pay £1200 a year each for 2 trucks plus my private car tax continue to pay it to build and maintain the roads, and then abstain from using them so that cyclists can do as they like, thank god some cyclists conduct themselves more professionally than you
malkyerf 4 years ago
Actually you pay an emission tax not a road tax so what you pay has nothing to do with bulding roads. Its only a shame halfwits like you can never understand this.
atractorboy 4 years ago 3
It's quite scary that someone with three vehicles like yourself has absolutely now idea about how cyclists should position themselves on the road -- there was nothing wrong with this cyclist's road position, the error was on the part of the impatient motorist
PS everyone (even those without cars or trucks) pays for roads - do a bit or research before you post
nickperry68 4 years ago 3
Someone else has already mentioned the tax issue and how you're not paying for the road through car tax (the local council pays for it with council tax). However, it is worth pointing out that cyclists are shockingly enough PEOPLE and by driving recklessly near them, contravening the Highway Code you WILL endanger their lives.
I cycle, and I drive. I have seen some terrible cyclists on the road, but this chap acted reasonably and safely. The driver did not.
Kaipaith 4 years ago 3
This is a troublesome stretch of road!
I still think the problem is that the so called 'primary' road position is an entirely unexpected occurrence to encounter while driving a car.
Gchoob 4 years ago
There is some truth in that. However, if you were to go along to nationally recognised training this is how you would be told to cycle.
The primary road position (read Cyclecraft!) prevents dangerous overtaking. It did on the bridge. My only mistake here was not holding a strong enough primary after the bridge.
magnatom 4 years ago
The primary position also provides an escape route. If a car puts me in danger I have the option of moving into the space I have created. If I cycle close to the gutter I have no escape route. Google the cyclechat forum. I'm there (same username). We discuss this form of cycling a lot there.
magnatom 4 years ago
I just got in, drenched, and i have tried the primary on a few occasions on the way home; St Vincent St, Gt. Western Rd etc. I didn't get any horn blasts!
Gchoob 4 years ago
It was very wet. Great fun! Generally I don't have any problems. Just occasionally you get someone who can't wait 15 seconds. Most drivers are actually ok. You just seem to remember the muppets!
magnatom 4 years ago
Is it not illegal now to show a vehicles number plate on video hmmm I think ill look into this
Glasgow2008 4 years ago
It's perfectly legal.
magnatom 4 years ago
I had a car beep at me a month or two ago but I caught it up with at the lights and then I got well in front of it again. I was doing about 25 mph and he never caught me up again due to the traffic only averaging 20 mph. I love it when that happens lol ,Getting one over on frustrated and impatiant car drivers!
xdr5xdrf 4 years ago
I've seen it a million times, but it kills me every time the same as the first.
"Nice to meet you then!"
I gave you an extra star for not punching the car on your second pass. Very admirable restraint, since you could have easily pedaled away in any direction afterward. I wonder if you can do anything with the clear video of his auto tag?
joeybike2 4 years ago
What a stupid overtake! IMO a selfish and impatient driver, overtaking dangerously when there's no point to the overtake. He didn't even save himself a second, since he got held up in the queue just ahead. Shame on you.
Magnatom, you were exactly right in your road positioning. Driver needs to go and read the highway code as well as learn some patience and tolerance IMO.
lsmike 4 years ago
What a muppet. I wonder what he would have said if you were driving and did that to his daughter?
