He knows he's back to his old self, and he has a certain condescending air about him. The same as he did earlier on in the film when speaking to his teacher, and to his parents. They said he wasn't originally supposta do that but after many many takes kubrick was getting bored so Mal decided to just be silly and Kubrick loved it so much he kept it like that.
