@Fezzterify do you really think that the government is going to spell things the way hillbillies say and spell it? No, and we are happy as hell to be as different from those corrupt pieces of trash.
@nbloomfield960 While I'll agree that most government at the federal and state levels are pretty corrupt, I doubt it's as much so at the local level. The more powerful the structure, the less motive there is for corruption. But this is all beside the point, the roads were named by the residents of each hollow, 15 or so years before I lived there, back when they were redoing all the 911 addresses.
@nbloomfield960 And, to be fair, we both could be a little right and a little wrong. The spelling could be colloquial and vary from town to town. My evidence is anecdotal, only from one town of many claiming Appalachian culture.
This song made that moment at the end of Justified! I'm from Scotland so can only watch the series on DVD. Can't wait for the 3rd season, though somehow I doubt they'll find a song to top this one.
no way near as good as Darrell scott, the creator of the song. Also check out Darrell's river take me, acoustic version. Pass the word people because if you ever get a chance to see darrell play then you are blessed.
One of the few Paisley songs I like, and I thank "Justified" (one of the best shows on TV and the only FX original series worth watching) for introducing me to it. A shame Paisley, despite his popularity, has never done as good music since. "Celebrity" was a fun novelty tune, but afterward he seemed to get caught up trying to repeat it over and over with garbage like "Alcohol" and "Ticks." One of the guys that's making country music suffer these days.
This is a great song, not really into his vocal style, mainly because it's so cliche every country artist sounds like this now. The Guitar and other assorted instruments sound good though.
If you want to know about someplace just go there and live there. TV shows you what you want to see and music shows you what the person wants to express. That said, this is a really nice song.
Damn I just seen a video of Harlan, Almost look's like I remember it 12 years ago, I need to take a trip down there again to see my family and where my grandpa was born and raised, and he told me a bunch of story's about Harlan and what it was like back in the day. I'm from a small town in Mid Michigan and if I go to Harlan I'll probably never leave I loved it there! RIP Gramps!
@cmrodican Considering I've only seen a couple of episodes of the show, I can't really say. I do know It's nothing like, "the old west". Harlan is just a regular small town, aside from a few areas. I personally think that most tv shows about Harlan (Or Kentucky in general) make us look absolutely horrible. Yes, There are a handful of illiterate idiots, but just a handful. Television portrays us as such, and it's a little insulting. and no. I do not know anyone named Cooter, nor does my family.
I'm actually from eastern Ky, have drove to Harlan for high school football games, and this song still gives me chills everytime i hear it. Great song!
Brad Paisley is one of my favorite performers, this is a great performance, but Patty Loveless absolutely is breathtaking in her performance. It is almost like you are there with the miners. They live a day at a time, there family is their #1 thought
Great cover of a great song. Brad Paisley is an amazing artist. If you want another take on the song, check out Darrell Scott's version. He's the incredible writer who wrote this song.
@RhCP4me311 - the song ended BOTH seasons.... Didn't you watch Season 2? *SPOILER IF YOU DIDN'T - AND, IF IT'S THE CASE: SHAME OIN YOU!!!* They played it when Mags killed herself in front of Raylan.
And guess what: I would bet my house they'll play that same song on every last scene of every season finale of "Justified"... which would be totally awesome.
Yeap born and raised in harlan and yes i do work in them ole coal mines it might not be safe but it will make u and true god fearin man cause u never know if u will leave them ole mines alive
.. Guess what.. I would not leave here for anything . There is nothing better then harlan county obviouslly.. @GBeret83 You have no clue. This is one of the safest places to be i can sleep at night with my door unlocked. What about you? Let me guess you sleep all locked up right lol...
@MegaFunkeymunkey - I lived in Canada too... and know people throughout the country - BC, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec - and NONE OF THEM, including myself, leave their doors unlocked.
So that's not more a city versus country life thing than being a Canadian thing. I mean, I know people who live in the burbs, where there's absolutely no crime to speak of, and yet they have security systems up the wazoo to protect themselves!
@madderthanever Im from New Brunswick...most people (not all of them) I know from the country don't lock their doors. They figure if someone is gonna break in to steal some shit, they may as well go on in and get it rather than leave a busted door frame to be fixed too. Only security system out in the country is the 12-gauge in your closet.
What's weird is it mentioned tilly Helton and my mom told me that my ancestors on my moms side were heltons and came from Harlan and I live in Harlan weird
i love this song i was raised in hazard ky i still live there . the best place in the world to live. just about my hole family works in the coal fields. everyone been affected by it. its what keeps eastern ky going.

I'm a life long Kentuckian; and would never leave. I don't live in Eastern Ky, or near Harlan. But, the history of coal, and what it means to our state runs deep in every Kentuckian.

@montana278 Yes, my sister and brother-in-law, a highway patrolman, lived in a small coal town in western VA for many years. The road was the only flat place for miles and the mountains rose up high on either side. I used to joke that she only saw the sun at noon.
