@SkullboyVonGhastly Ok. Glad I learnt that. I remember it because Nikolai is the name of the Prince of Ironfirst in the ficticious world of Might and Magic.
How is it pronounced? Because I always read it "Nick-oh-lie" but I guess that's not right...
@JaiNobesIsARat (Another) hm... I actually think that you might be right about the pronouncement, save that you say "lai" at the end. By the way I saw a film this weekend (The Prestige), where they talked about him, and there they both wrote and said Nikola, so I think that it maybe vary... Very confusing...
A pirates vs ninjas debate... fun! Pirates. I mean, lets face it, pirates are the meanest, scurviest raiders ever. Ninjas... silent, deadly, but aren't much of a match against the gun totin', back stabbin' pirates.
I love this conversation. Here we have a disagreement - on Youtube, no less - and no one's mutilated the English language, as far as I've read. I've no stance on the pirates/ninjas debate, but I tip my hat to all of you!
@drstrangeman a large part of the reason why pirates still exist today is because the term pirate is a lot more generally defined. Any sort of nautical brigand or robber is technically a pirate. The Viking raiders were a type of pirates as well.
@HahalolxD56 Hm...actually, now that he mentions it, they actually do seem pretty similar. The generic word "pirate" pretty much just refers to someone who raids someone else's stuff from a boat. Of course, the vikings did a lot more than that, too. Similarities. Whether or not they're the same thing is debatable.
pirate>ninjas...pirates get airships, guns, rum, and women, plundered loot and timeless stories and songs, and fun movies. ninjas get a sword and rice wine and are nearly indistinguishable from their women. and crappy videogames and bad movies. winner pirates hands down.
airship pirates are like our air force. but they actually do shit unlike the NATO chair force. and how do you figure ninjas kick pirate ass? there is not a single ninja that made a single shift in history. pirates have shaped the history through out the world. and there are pirates of different nations, ethnic groups and they are still in existence. sorry pal (*not really though) ninjas are little more than glorified farmers with pitchforks turned spy for hire. historically of course
@drstrangeman But they had a very important shift in the history of Japan. The ninjas fought against the tyranny of corrupt officials and samurai and played a large role in ending the feudal era in Japanese history. They also developed very unique ways of assassination and spying. Neither are bad, however. Its like picking the shiniest diamond out of the shaft.
@tehBlixxy ok. i'll give you that. but still the age of piracy has made an international shift in technological development along with tactics. the simple fact pirates still exist today it a testament to their efficiency and their determination. personally I'd rather deal with a ninja than a pirate for the simple reason a ninja might out right kill you. a pirate would sell you right into slavery along with all your belongings. historically it was woe to those who crossed a pirate at any time.
besides if you wanna get all fantastical ninjas get all the credit because of the japan-a-philes and the over rated katana punks and sense all manga tends to be about japan only (with very very few exceptions like Hellsing) but pirates actually get recognized by novelists and movie makers with a massive success. but the ninja is just a dime a dozen generic assassin in black pajamas who if grouped together are really suck-tackular. basically pirates improvise adapt & overcome. ninjas don't
@drstrangeman If we're getting really technical, the history of ninjas is much better than that of pirates. But at the same time, you bash me when I say that the Airship Pirates claim superiority over Ninjas AND pirates.
@videocritic2463 To err is what a wench be sayin' when she messes up the rum order, TO WASH THE POOPDECK BE THE RIGHT THING FOR YE PHILOSOPHY NINNYS. Yarr.
@feefeenou Well, it sure took you long enough! Care to join me and my crew? Mullets, bucket boots and 1895 Colt-Brownings are currently existing in abundance!
@AspergirlSithstress yes I love their intention but not all their efforts. I think clockyard was tedious and drawn out. I am not a fanboy only a over of good music so I'm always a heretic to anyone who worships the catalog instead of the message.
@AspergirlSithstress a catalog is the term for a band's collected songs. e.g. "I have the complete Dr. Steel catalog he hasn't put out a song I don't own. " When you start pretending even the lesser songs by an artist are masterpieces you discount the term. Derelict and aether shanty and building steam were the best songs on this album the others were lesser to one degree or another. If clockyard had been the best song on the album it'd have been a bad album. Side note, awesome screen name.
@ratholin What if you're not pretending? What if you don't think the songs are lesser at all, and even like them better than Clockard, Building Steam, and Derelict? Not everyone has the same taste. And besides, some artist just create masterpieces everywhere they go--greater and lesser masterpieces, but all masterpieces just the same....
@ratholin They cough, fart and sneeze masterpieces, they turn around and a masterpiece flies out of their ear. Some groups do and whether or not one considers a particular song a masterpiece is a matter of taste.
Side note: thanks on the U/N. Combination of 'Asperger's+Girl" and "Sith+Mistress" --feminist Star-Wars autism rock-out name.
If this song tickles your fancy, try Alestorm. Wolves of the Sea, To the End of our Days, The Huntmaster. Keelhauled. The Quest. Captain Morgan's Revenge, Terror on the High Seas, Chronicles of Vengeance. Death Before the Mast.
@ibag321 It was partially written by Robert L. Stevenson for Treasure Island, but the full shanty was composed by Young E Alison in 1891. This is just Abney Park making the song awesome.
