also when you bring the ball down after the initial catch you have to be careful cus if you do it with too much momentum then the ball will keep going down and you might hit yourself in the balls. trust me, it hurts.
don't get discouraged, I'm your height and when I played, I was able to put my head at the bar as well. Just because your're smaller, doesn't mean that you can't elevate.
@AndreasSchumacher I'm 5'6" and i can get my head to the bar a good exercise to gain more elevation or spring as i call it is to do bunny hops do some low ones and very low ones takes time and hurts like hell for a while but trust me it pays off
@AndreasSchumacher i agree that it can be hard for keepers like us who are short. although im taller than you (5'11) i still also find coming to claim high balls especially this year since it was my 1st year of senior football playing against older taller and stronger oponents. so i did wieghts, tried to improve my vericle jump and worked with tackle bahs to tuffen up. hope this helps:)
can i ask ...do u start to run when ppl take the run to kick or when teh ball is in the air....i kinda have a bad judgement on tht....i ussually stick and nvr even try to catch a cross...only stick at the center of the goal and deflect incoming objects XD
You must not move until the ball is in the air and you have judged the speed, trajectory and any curve that might be on the ball. Once you've made those calculations, then you have to decide where you will be able to take the ball at it's highest point and if there is enough space between you and any other players to get to that point without being impeded. All of this must happen within 1 second or so.
your first priority should always be to try and catch. always. If you find yourself into a large crowd of people and can't reach the ball, cleanly, then look to punch the ball away with the closed fist, but never slap the ball away with the open hand.
I know you say that the knee's primary purpose is not for protection but for momentum. But do you feel like the keeper in the first set of tosses should have left his knee up, landing on his take off leg, for the benefit of protection? This is the way I've been taught and I noticed that at the moment he receives the ball he straightens his body and lands on two legs.
the reason he lands on two legs as opposed to one leg is that he has better balance when landing on both feet. This way at the time of landing, he is not as succeptable to being knocked off balance by any incidental or intentional contact - thus losing his balance and possibly control of the ball.
I'm a goalie and when we try corners in practice, as you did in this video alone, I have no problem. However, when in a game I find myself confused by all the people and it seems very chaotic. Any advice on hot to run out and catch the ball while avoiding people?
the best way to learn how to deal with that issue is to train with players inside your 6 yard box. Depending on how comfortable you are with their presence, you might just have them stand in a stationary position and not move at all, while you take your crosses. As you get more comfortable with moving in and out amongst the bodies, then you can put the players in motion where there are ust jogging inside the 6, without challenging you for the cross.
im a goalie and i noticed that i have a really bad habit of thinking that i cant get down fast enough, and i started using my feet to kick balls out of the goal...
How far away from the goal line to you recommend positioning yourself. I'm usually right on the goal line, and don't find myself getting to hardly any balls on corners.
if the ball is coming from your right side, stay a little closer to the line as those balls will have a natural tendency to swing in towards you in the goal. Balls being served in from the left side have a tendency to swing slightly away from the goal, so you can usually take a starting position about 3-4 yards off the line.
try to catch the ball at highest point you possibly can. Once the ball is struck, just hold still and read the speed and trajectory of the ball being served. Once you know where you can take the ball at your highest point, then make your move toward wherever there point is.
I have a problem with corners though. I'm 5' 10'' and at corners, sometimes they send their tallest player to stand right in front of me when I play. What can I do to get him away as it prevents me attempting to come for the ball coming in.
I am having the same problem. I am 5'8" - 5'9" (havent checked in a while). I also would like a video on breakaways? Like proper technique coming out of the net and so on. Thanks.
a little tip i have pick up in my time playing is if you catch a cross for example the left as soon as you have it look to your right most of player will be centre to left and you ll find your right midfielder will have the space to receive it and break
the best thing you can do when they put a forward right in front of you on corners, is to take another one of your players, possibly a forward, and stick them in front of the opponent that is blocking you. This way any ball head height or lower that is served in is eliminated by your teammate in front and any ball served above head height is dealt with by you. As for encouraging those players not to stand in front of you...the moment the ball is struck, step on his achilles tendon and push off
one thing we teach is that when they do that, you take your nearest foot to the forward, and as the corner is taking, pressing down on the back of the heel or achilles tendon of the forward. DO NOT STOMP on the player as the referee will see that very easily. You must lift the front part of your foot and press down hard, but not stomp. This will send a message to the forward that if he wants to come in there with you, there will a price to be paid.
I´ve got a question...when the other team has to take a corner kick and the guy is kicking the ball, that I can catch it, so I´m going out of my goal, but then I realise it´s getting longer and longer so I can´t reach it, what should I do?I don´t have time to get back into the goal, but also can´t reach the ball..
If you find yourself in a position where you've started to come for the ball and realize that you won't be able to cover the distance in time, retreat back towards you line as quickly as possible. You're right in that you won't have time to get all the way back to your goal line, but get as close as you can before the crossed ball is met by an opposing head or foot.
hey i love your videos. crosses are definately a weak point in my game. but i was wondering what the best ways to make lean muscle are, cause im rather scrawny and would really like to get stronger.
but once again thanks for the videos, youve given me a few things i didnt know and need to work on
be careful not to confuse being thin with lacking strength. Just because you have a thinner build, which for a goalkeeper is okay, that doesn't necessarily mean that you are not strong. I would reccomend that you watch our "Individual Training" videos episodes 1 and 2 for excercises you can do to gain strength and power for your lower body, your core and your arms.
they will require two different technique. One for diving and another all together for scooping, which I assume you mean forward dive. For diving, are you having problems with balls in the air, or low on the gorund?
its in the air.. like alomst all. from dives especially. even if i sometimes catch the ball, when i land on the ground, the ball will slip out of my hands... any tips on that?
yes, that's a common issue. The problem is one of two potential reasons. 1) the top hand is not directly on top of the ball when you pin the ball to the floor. Instead the top hand is slightly behind center and the momentum of the dive is pushing ball away from you when you are trying to place the ball on the ground. Make sure the top hand is directly on top of the ball when pinning it to the ground. 2) you might be hitting the ground with your shoulders before the ball is hitting the ground.
one thing i don't get, is this a kind of college that you can have goalkeepingsoccer as a extra choice? i am from sweden and 15 yrs old, and you may think i'm stupid but i don't get this. I have goalkeepertrainings with the seniorteam some days a week, but i don't get so much out of it.
no, this is a school specifically for goalkeeping. Students can come in as often as they wish based on their personal schedule to work on their goalkeeping technique and tactical issues.
I agree with the physics behind what you're saying. watch his knee, though, does it come down before or after his hands have made contact with the ball?
he does...how do you think he gets his lift? once he's up in the air, he doesn't need to keep the knee up...he just needs to use it for lift and momentum.
an excellent question...most people think the knee is brought up for protection, when it reality it is driven up for momentum. The protection comes in the force and momentum which you drive through the ball at the point of contact. That's why we emphasize so strongly that you are attacking the ball with as much speed as you possibly can. Simple physics dictates that if you two objects of similiar mass and size, the one with the most speed will win in a collision between those two objects.
hey i wished if u could video for basic positioning i.e. for being in right place fo shots from 30 to 50 yards means long shots

definately not easy for someone of my stature (5'9"), this keeper's head is at the crossbar...way easy to take freekicks and corners with that size.
