Magnificent band with a magnificent song, brings back great memories of brilliant nights out in Glasgow, when we were all so much younger!! One of the best songs by any Scottish artist/band!!
without being too syrupy i first heard this on annie nightingale on a sunday night when i should have been getting an early night for school. so glad i didn't. the blue nile are the most stunning british band i have ever heard. this album was voted i think no 2 in the scotsman's best albums of the 20th century. buchananan transcends all borders with the most sublime talent. how the hell we were all banging about duran & spandau when these guys were about i will never know. best song ever imho
My fav song forever, and my fav Band, ..form elio, a lover of Scotland and its music (John Martyn, C. Twins& R. Guthrie ) living in Southern Italy ( Napoli )
Scotland doesn't do quantity but by God we do Quality.Seen the Blue Nile at The Royal concert hall in Glasgow, absolutely fantastic.Paul Buchanan took the time to thank people at a side door after the gig.The measure of the man.I have grown up listening to this band.Got the chance to tell him that then.
JUST WATCHED SCONNIE BOTLAND GET CHEATED! PISSED UP & PISSED OFF BUT WHAT BETTER A PICK-ME-UP THAN THIS? NEVER TIRE OF GREATNESS. (HOPE MY SPELLING IS OK) GOD BLESS.
Aye! Blimey. I bought 'a walk across the rooftops' in about 1984 on a whim having heard 'tinsletown' played by Steve Wright of all the c...... (with the same purchase as 'back in black' I recall....eeek) I still love the blue nile (and AC/DC for that matter). There is something fucking marvellous about all their music, got to agree with below that it does give me the goosebumps.
I love this song, and I love The Blue Nile. There's an indefinably special quality to their music. The first two LPs (esp. Hats) are damn near perfection. Everything works. There truly is no other band quite like them.
A truely AWESOME tune from an AWESOME band. Nearly 30 yrs on, the hairs still stand on the back of my neck when i hear this. Sits comfortably in my ten best tunes of all time. :0)
Best thing I've ever seen on Jools Holland show. I am now utterly ashamed beyond words can describe that I have never checked out Blue Nile before, but I know this song well. I thought it was something by some big well known artist like Frank Sinatra, from the 70's or the 60's or something, and decided to look it up on the internet. On the basis of this one performance alone this outfit look totally outstanding, everything is strong, keyboards/synth, funk guitar, drums, bass, singing.
I first saw The Blue Nile live in 1990 (?) on their "Hats" tour in London. This is no exaggeration, the audience gave them a standing ovation after every song they played!
Awww man great post, heard Andrea Corr's version on the radio today, no way near half as good as this, oi corr leave classics well alone woman,lol........THIS IS FANTASTIC.
@mikemckv I agree mate, her version's pish! She wants tae take her face away fur a shite! What kind of person disnae even ken where they are singin' aboot! Stupid cow!
Yes, this band deserved much greater acclaim. Perhaps everybody else simply
decided to go to the local pub, where for more money, they could drown out the magic from their ears, then at midnight realise that they did not touch the true magic that these awsome musicians were producing live in those days past.

strange.I can listening this song over and over again and it stil gives me the chills. But also a warm/ cold feeling. a feeling i wanna kiss my girl, a feeling like i can forget everything, a feeling now a days the music sucks, a feeling this band should have been bigger etc etc
Blimey. Never, ever knew what any of em looked like until this. Bought 'walk across the rooftops' in about 1984 after someone else played me 'tinsletown in the rain'. superb album. For my money after 'hats' they went 'slightly' downhill. Then again, in that period I'm sure the stone roses had 2 albums out...Fucking great clip. On a par with one I found earlier of Black Sabbath playing 'fairies wear boots from 1970...one digresses and should fuck off!
Great dance record of the eighties Glasgow, hitting the floor at the Warehouse ,Clatty Pats and Strathclyde Uni, gave you the courage to grab the nearest girl and let yourself go...........memories,cold nights in George Square and actually danced to this at the Savoy nearly 30 years later and still letting myself go ,a pint and this track go hand in hand . Thank you Blue Nile
The best song ever from the best band. Bought Walk Across The Rooftops on Linn label at a hi-fi show in 1984. This track still blows me away 27 years later
Absolute magic !! What more can you say about this song it brings back many happy memories of a girl I used to go out with . The Blue Nile are brilliant and Paul Buchanan has the most amazing voice, I love all his work with other people too.
I had never heard this song or even of the band before today and I can honestly say that this song is unlike any other I have heard. Quite mesmerising.
What is to dislike about this? This is from the time when music was made with a bit of passion. Must be 6 Justin Beber or what ever the fuck he is called fans who dislike this because they can't understand the lyrics.

Personally, I like this version better than the studio track. Paul sounds awesome! What a great group! All the great pop music comes from the British Isles! Makes me proud to be a yank of Scottish descent... ;>)
Muy buenos, pero esta vez se han pasado al tocarla en directo con tantas revoluciones, deberian haberla tocado mas lenta, para que sonara mejor. La voz del cantante fantastica.
I have very fond memories of my mum listening to this album when I was 5 years old, and I will be eternally grateful that she introduced me to this superb album. 27 years later and I've never grown tired of it......and I don't think I ever will.
you know the real mark of greatness is to re-create the studio version of a song on a live stage.....that is acheived here just about......so often a band will do a live 'version' cos its too much work to replicate the cool effects of a studio. Radio one presenters jump up and down saying...."wow they did a really amazing stunning awesome 'stripped-down' version of xyz'...lol.....
Stripped down=can't be arsed/want to look clever to dense folks hahaha
@jippyjester I think you're actually being a little harsh. I can assure you that more often than not it's nothing to do with wanting to appear clever or not giving a damn, it's quite simply that most bands are unable to replicate their studio sound in a live situation. They are so reliant on technology and producers making them sound so much more accomplished as musicians than they truly are. This explains why most "live" albums are really nothing of the sort.
Saved my soul, this album did. Thought I wanted to take a walk across the rooftops and just jump...but there's such wisdom in these lyrics and so much craft in the dramatic orchestration. Admirable, formidable, magnifique. J'taimes.
This band were, unless my memory defeats me, signed to Linn records, an independendent Glasgow label who also made super hi fi record decks and amps, it was all about the recorded sound. And yet, here we are with these geniuses really cutting it live. Bliss....................
Can't believe 6 poeple gave this the thumbs down. They must have done it by accident or either that they are fucking tone deaf! This is glorious and the Blue Nile are legends
Still reminds me of snowy winters in Glasgow mid eighties at night, my first girlfriend and I walking hand in hand down paisley road west, cold lips touching and warm smiles. Memories, as they say, are made of such things.
Watching and listening to this reminds me of just how powerful and uplifting a piece of music can be. I shall not listen to any more tracks for the moment because none will come close to this one.
Words like 'classic' and 'legendary' are often bandied around without justification - not this time though. What a classic from a legendary band. Reminds why I love music. Memories of Annie Nightingale on her Sunday night Radio 1 show, trying to put off thoughts of school next day. She played this to death - superb!
its 20 years since i first heard this live in the bottom line in NY,23rd july 1990, transformed my view on live music and every album since. They are still the best , their music changes with time. roll on vickers street and the next gig
better than beatin the racist scum airdrie at the theatre of dreams..NGE forever..

Can't believe 6 poeple gave this the thumbs down. They must have done it by accident or either that they are fucking tone deaf! This is glorious and the Blue Nile are legends

Just effortless 'CLASS' from a much underated band.....this is 'LIVE' and it just sounds as good or if not better than the record...!!!!!!!!!

She played this to death - superb!

the bass at 2.28, the great 80's funk chops at 3.20, and the way the vocal glides and soars across the whole thing, it's just majestic

That first record was like discovering the most beautiful piece of art you've ever laid eyes on. This still touches me.
