you can actually hear a faint sound of another woodpecker. those beaks of theirs must be bloody strong if they can keep on drumming on a metal surface

The use their pecking to announce territory as well as attracting mates. This one found a nice loud surface to drum on. :-)

Red Bellied Woodpeckers are attracted to echoing noises like that, may be the same reason.

Actually yes, I believe that woodpeckers communicate with each other like that. I'm fairly sure, at least.
