I wonder how many cigarettes of yours are floating in the bow river? pretty pathetic. By the way why don't you towel off all the fish's protective coating the next time you land a fish you cant handle.. even your child is distraught with it!
@icdesign2006 Yeah I picked up that cigarette but after I finished toweling off all the protective slime coat on that fish, made a mistake by throwing the butt in the river. I try and learn from my mistakes and not repeat them. I don't think my child has gotten over that yet and it's been a couple of years later. He still goes to therapy to this day !!!!
I see my video is not the only video you have left a nice comment on. You must have alot of friends on YouTube because of your kind remarks
@GooseGuy400 Just one of those days when the rainbows took over the river gooseguy... Then we get those days when it's all Browns man...Different times of the year will see more rainbows and then you will start to see more browns in the fall. Thanks.
I fish the bow as well and don't have alot of experience fishing on rivers. Without a boat available where should I fish to me what signs should i look for on the river that would hide trout. P.S are storm drains something to stay away from or use to your advantage???
after wtaching most of your video's, i'm envious of your fish their huge trout!!!!!! i'll have to plan a trip next spring or summer!!! keep the videos rockin!!!!!
nice fish, big rainbows, where is this location, i assume nowhere near the west coast, good fishing though fire tiger seems to work great in california how bout where u r?
Do you have an e-mail address which you could display on this site, or do you have contact info on your personal website? I would like additional on the specifics of the Bow River for a potential trip. Thanks again.
Hello Mike, here is what I use year round on the Bow River. The rod is a Berkley Precision Tech 6'6 medium action spinning rod. The reels I use are Pflueger Supreme spinning reels 8040MG is the model number on the reel.
The line is 8LB Berkley XT Monofilament straight to the lure, no fluorocarbon needed. I will e-mail you the rest on the info you requested here.
I use a similar rod/reel setup for my freshwater fishing, with the exception of the line; I use braid with fluorocarbon leaders.
Regarding my other questions, are you comfortable with floating your e-mail address on this site, or can I get your e-mail address through your blog site? Please advise, and thanks again.
What has been your most successful all round rig (rod/reel size, line weight, leader weight, etc.) for fishing the Bow River? Do you use a braid main line with fluorocarbon leader?
If I were to plan a trip for the Bow River, what would you consider to be the best time of the year to go (all things considered -- weather, fishing traffic, river height/fishing quality, etc.). Is the River easily accessible and easily fishable from a kayak? Do you guide the river?
Thanks for all the feedback on my "lure of choice" query. The river in Maine we'll be fishing this summer is the Androscoggin. We have a great guide whom we've used for the past few years. The stretch we'll be fishing is premiere smallmouth bass habitat with the fish averaging 14"-16". Last year we took a couple large rainbows 17"-18" which hit Rooster Tails. There are Browns in the river system, although we have yet to catch any. Thanks again for the feedback!
Try and see what kinds of fish are swimming in the river/rivers you intend to fish, that way you are already ahead of the game. Check out local forums and see what you can find out before your trip. Hire a guide if you can afford one for a day. It will save alot of time learning the river.
Depending on the day and the way the water looks, I use the Countdowns first and then usually go to the X-Rap even if I am hooking into fish with the Countdown's. The sizes I use are CD-9 or CD-11 in the countdowns or in the X-Raps I use the XR-8 or the XR- 10. The colors I like in the X-Rap's are RT, SB, OG and HS. I do not use smaller baits on the Bow River. Small fish will hit big bait and so will large fish.
Hello bigblip, In the September video I was using the Rapala Countdown CD-9 Brown Trout pattern. When fishing the Bow River for Rainbows and Browns my go to Countdowns are natural patterns that are native to the river system. The rainbow trout pattern or the brown trout pattern come out of the back pack first. Then the flashy colors come out if the natural color's do not work .
I'm curious, which size/pattern countdown Rapalas were you using during this September outing on the Bow River? In another of your Bow River videos your buddy seems to be cleaning up on an X-Rap, in another he seems to be using Rapalas in color schemes I havent seen before. Which is your first choice, go to lure/color pattern when fishing the river and why (Countdown Rapala, X-Rap, other...)? I'm planning a trip to Maine this summer and wanted to try some similar lures and techniques.
My apologies, no disrespect intended; admittedly, I can come across a bit harsh and sarcastic in my commentary -- writing online doesn't always arrive as intended.
Overall, you did a great job in presenting the use of countdown Rapalas for river fishing, and you had the fish to show for it! Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much, I am plannig to do a series of videos on presenting lures, how to fish spinners etc, etc. It will be both from a boat and from shore. I am hoping to do the first two videos before the snow flies and then I will finish the series off in the spring of 2009, so stay tuned for more vidoes to come.

Awesome fish, mike I have to ask you a few questions i can't find the answer to on your blog.
1. What type and test line do you use when in search of large browns and which type of mono line and test do you use generally?
2. What colours and size of clackin raps have you found to be hot?

Hello golfer, this is the Bow River which flows through Calgary, Alberta. Some of the best trout fishing in the world.
Fire tiger works fairly well as well as the natural patterns. I like brown trout and rainbow trout patterns, they seem to work great also.
Thanks for your comment,
