I actually thought the technical marks were a bit high. Two triple toes (one a step out) and a double axle? Plus she clearly gave no effort to at least sell the program (understandable). I would have given: 4.5/5.0.
I agree with the others. She was enjoyable to watch when she was on. But her public image and persona were so off-putting! Also, she had this 20-something going on 12 years old impression about her. It was disturbing. Glad she skated so well in 1994 after this though!
This was a typical Kerrigan program, full of mistakes. Her whole career was full of errors and sub-par performances. Look at the vids.
Until she brought in Vera Wang in 92, Nancy was considered unattractive with mediocre talent. Nancy had a huge wardrobe allowance, a terrific cosmetic surgeon, and a great styling team.
Vera Wang was the one who transformed Nancy's image and made her look stunning.
Nancy was all image and no subtance when it came to actual skating.
I do feel sorry for her - she is just anguished after this performance. On the other hand, this event may have been Surya Bonaly's best long program ever. 7 terrific triple jumps and I'd say good artistry too! Definitely deserved the gold!!!!
She looked like the American version of Kira Ivanova or Laetita Hubert stkating here. It also showed that she really isnt very artistic at all, as the whole program fell apart when the jumps did.
I was very upset as I recall. Because I think the poor showing by the American women that year meant no 3 spots at the Olympics-deja vu this year in 2010 I'm afraid.
what a horrible attitude she has. there is nothing as disappointing as failing at something you've worked so hard for but when you're in the public spotlight you need to show good sportsmanship and professionalism. Watch the end where she rejects flowers from the little girl who picked them up for her. That was very distasteful and embarrassing for her as an american athlete.
I agree with camillenadia, she wasn't TOO overrated. She had some great artistry and her skating was always polished! As Scott Hamilton stated about Sasha Cohen's 2006 Olympic performance "the athletic aspect of the sport betray her at times" same thing with Kerrigan! But she was robbed in '94 Olympics!
I hope that she was able to do something nice for her family after her silver medal at Nagano, since she received millions in endorsement money after the Olympics.
She did behave badly through much of career though.
Yeah, I agree. And although I was never a big fan of Nancy, esp. after her behavior after winning the Silver at Lillihammer, she's a really sweet and down to earth in person.
My mom and I were lucky enough to meet her after a tour performance years ago, and that meeting changed our perception of her. She may not have had the greatest competitive attitude, but after all that is said and done, Nancy is just one of us.
Since then, we've admired any appearance she makes.
So sad to see somebody choke this badly. Nancy seemed to need a lot of validation, and in spite of her solid technique and majestic presence on the ice, she seemed not to believe in herself...or to believe in whatever a person has to do to deal with the pressure. Too bad....
She did not skate well....But she look so pretty like a skating barbie doll.....i would love to here response to this now that has been so many years ago what really happen i know she chocked but was really the problem
IMHO, she was not used to having the focus on her-hence she did not have to focus as much while Kristi was around. That all changed in 1993. Also think she didn't pay enough attention to training. Again too many exhibitions and endorsements but who knows. This was one of those nights as a skater where you have to just throw it away and concentrate on the next event.
I sincerely believe that THIS is program that cost Nancy Kerrigan the gold in '94. Unfortunately, in those days, reputation played a part in the judges' propensity for favoring skaters. This program sealed her reputation as a choker (see also her '92 Olympic LP). In 1994, Oksana Baiul's brief history on the world stage was punctuated by triumphs. This program broke my heart and I could never believe in Nancy Kerrigan again in the competitive arena.
another proof of reputation: Plushenko getting 5.8/5.9 for artistry in SP at 02 Oly. He came in as reigning world champ and was gifted those marks. In 94, reinging world champ Kurt Browning fell on a jump and was in 12th after SP definitely not 4th...
That is stupid for you to lost respect for Nancy technically just because of one performance. Everyone has bad performances. Even Michelle Kwan, the best female figure skater ever in my opinion, has had bad skates. It only made me respect Nancy more when I seen her comeback in 1994. She definitely deserved the gold metal in Lillahamer. It was a shame that Oksana won that over her, just a shame.
I didn't lose respect for her because of that performance. It was merely the icing on the cake. Her performance in 1994 would have probably been just as sad if she hadn't had herself all psyched up because of the attack. Tonya Harding's thugs did her a favor.
I do think the attack gave her a little extra determination, but I have seen many performances by Nancy posted here on youtube, where she medaled in major events with very nice performances and jumps. The truth is Nancy and Oksana both made the figure skating sport popular in the 90's. After the 94 olympic games, sooo many more people watched the sport because of Oksana, but I believe mostly because of the way Nancy warmed the hearts of our country.
Nancy never stepped up in a big event except the 94 Olympics, where I agree she was robbed of the gold. The 91 Worlds maybe I guess, but she was an unknown then so easier to do. The 92 Olympics she had a chance to win after Kristi's performance and skated so poorly she was lucky to hold on for bronze. 92 Worlds she was even worse and won silver by default with some generous scoring too. 93 Worlds she
really bombed and for once the other women skated well. Sorry overall she was overrated.
Yeah, but Oksana wasn't much better. Her jumping was very inconsistent, and she never did any jump combinations. The only reason Oksana won the 93 worlds and 94 olympics was because of her bubbly personality. Nancy's jumps weren't consistant either, but at least she skated with maturity and did jump combinations.
I agree. Oksana was way overrated, which means both of the big stars of that half quadrennial were vastly overrated and overhyped in my mind making it annoying as a viewer. As overrated she was Oksana atleast managed to not mop up the ice with her dress at major events. If Nancy had skated with the drive and focus she did in the 94 season she was much superior to Oksana, and I agree she was totally robbed of the 94 Olympic Gold there. However the sad truth is she didnt, only that one season.
But Oksana only skated for two seasons, 93 and 94. Oksana outskated Nancy in 93 and vice versa in 94, so I would say they're about equal. Oksana shouldn't have won the world's in 93 either though. It really should've been Surya's shining moment. Additionally, you may be right about Oksana and Nancy being overrated, but you have to admit that these two skaters did bring popularity to the sport. There weren't many spectators of figure skating until the 1994 olympic games.
I don't think she was entirely overrated. She was always a good skater, she just had a very bad habit of flaking out in the long program, as was painfully demonstrated here.
I think this is one of the most beautifully choreographed skating programs ever. It really played to Nancy's stengths as a skater. I remember watching it on TV and feeling so sorry for her. It's a shame she let her nerves get to her.
Poor girl. It must have been so tough to skate after all those near-perfect performances by the youngsters. I think it's very impressive that she was able to come back from this - and the horrible attack a year later - to do so well at the Olympics. I thought Nancy should have won the gold in 1994 - Oksana's program didn't have the difficulty or cleanness that Nancy's program did. Even so, to skate that well after all she went through, she has my complete admiration.
You keep talking about all that Nancy overcame in Lillehammer to skate so well. C'mon it was over 6 weeks since the attack she had time to recuperate and get her head on straight. Okasana on the other hand had been involved in a freak accident just the day before and had to be on painkillers just to skate the LP. In fact i think she had a broken rib. Let's see any skater in that amount of pain skate like she did that night.
Well, I'm sorry but Oksana shouldn't have won the gold. She had several two footed landings, sloppy spins and no combinations. She shouldn't have won the 1993 World's either - Surya was robbed. And Nancy had the press breathing down her throat at all times during the 1994 Olympics. The attention was not on Oksana - that was a huge, huge advantage for Oksana, and yet Nancy still beat her IMHO.
Yes, it's sad. You can see her heart isn't in it, and after she touches down on the first jump, her confidence (if there ever was any) rapidly evaporates.
Painful, painful, PAINFUL! What always cracked me up with Nancy is if she was doing well she'd have this beautiful, happy smile, if she wasn't she had an ugly scowl throughout her program. It was a wake up call and she worked hard for 1994 when she won the Gold, at least that was my opinion.
HELLO, I said it was my opinion she won the gold over a two two foot landing and sloppy performance and also obvious biases judging to "the Cowsana Pitbull". LMAO! Nancy won that gold medal hands down, she just didn't get it put around her neck!
ah okay, im sorry i missunderstood you! i think she didnt deserve the gold, and if this scandal wouldnt happen she would not even stand on the podium!she wasnt a very good skater in my opinion! but everyone has his own!
I couldn't agree with you more, Twilliger123. Nancy was clearly the better skater in 1994. Oksana's program was very entertaining but full of minor errors. Even though Nancy's opening jump was a double flip instead of the planned triple, it was still skated cleaner and with far more difficulty than Baiul's. Nancy had two very difficult combinations; Oksana, none. I think Surya Bonaly should have been world champion in 1993 for the very same reasons Nancy should have won in 1994.
I still like the way on the triple-triple sequence (mislabeled a "combination" by the commentator) the second jump was better than the first. I wish she had gone for the triple on the second lutz attempt. She had nothing to lose.
This hurt to watch. Everything came to a head here--her habit of flaking out in the long program, the pressure on her to win, as the silver medalist in 1992 and the last of the "Big 3", and watching every other skater do a phenomenal job
Poor her? Uh, Josee Chouinard blew it just as bad as Nancy did, and she really berated herself in the kiss and cry, asking herself out loud why can't she ever skate well in the long program at Worlds. It was even more heartbreaking to see and hear than with Nancy. Chouinard dropped from 3rd to 9th.
Nancy Kerrigan looks so gorgeous on ice just like a princess. One of the most beautiful skaters on ice i have ever seen u looked so well put together..
If Nancy had won the Worlds this year she would have won the Olympics. Being so close to winning even with Biaul's advantage of being the reigning Champ, and the status Kerrigan was having before boming here, it would definitely have been Nancy's gold at the 94 Olympics with the same performances. This skate not only cost her the 93 World title but the 94 Olympics.
So true. The Biaul "narrative" -- poor orphan becomes world champion -- took flight with her victory here. That narrative was too powerful for Oksana to get anything but gold in 1994. The judges didn't want to get in the way of a good story.
Yes, and Nancy's story--coming back from this disastrous performance and a brutal attack should have been equally powerful.
Either way, the judges were going to come off looking like they were playing favorites and not really judging the quality of the skater's performance.
That's the problem with figure skating, which I love, BTW. It's a difficult sport, like anything else, but it's too subjective--the 2002 Pairs scandal proved that.
plus that Oksana was from a former soviet country. they always paved the way for them at the olympics and it became very ugly and more evident by the newer era of skating from 80s-00s
Also, remember that there were two big tragedies in the event and back-to-back. First, Nancy's and then Josee Chouinard who skated right after Nancy and was also the final skater of the night. Both women had the door wide open for them to medal but even win the title. Josee found herself in a chance to win moments after Nancy's disaster. Nancy: 1st to 5th, Josee: 4th to 9th.
tragedy. i wanted her to win this (and it was so sure she would), but even today after the big 94 olympics issue and her being a victim of corruption, i really wanted her to win this and olympics! i watched this but i forgot how she did in the warmup. anyone know? she should have not watched the girls or heard the crowd, but instead put on a walkman in the back while waiting.
This performance made her tough and determined to come back strong which she did the following year. Sometimes you gotta hit rock bottom before you rebound. Love the music though.
My god she looked so terrified...I did feel sorry for her. Mind you, with only two clean triples (two toeloops) she was lucky to get the marks she did. I do agree that the pressure Chen, Sato, Baiul and Bonaly put on her must have been immense.
I remember that moment. What pressure she must have had considering how well every other skater was doing ahead of her but she was never a consistent skater anyway, but at least she came back to earn a silver in the olys.
She is SO real:)-:) Nothing phony about Nancy Kerrigan and that is rare in that world of figure skating. Rare and refreshing!

I agree. Nancy had nobody to blame but herself. Just like in '97 if Kwan had won the worlds instead of Lipinski I thinks he would have won in '98.

I agree; when the top two perform well and the judges cannot decide the current world champ usually gets the nod,

LOL, she has the most dramatic Kiss + Cry moment here. "I just want to die".

Poor thing! I feel so bad for her! That's really tough! She looked so shaky and scared right from the beginning.

She looks like she's about to fall apart in her opening pose. I can't believe someone favorited this... :-P

Yeah, especially after the performance at US Nationals just prior to this.
