@Sodiumreactor it doesn't matter i was making an observation. they are dumb asses because they make comments about shit they dont know about if they were on board ships when they were making hard turns under full speed then they would understand that a ship heels to the opposite side of the turn.

when i was in NJROTC back in 03 or 04 we got to ride in a Mark V with the SEALS. pretty sweet. we hit port/starboard from a straight trajectory at about 40 knots, those things turn on a dime. its like a rollercoaster on the water.
Hell Yeah! I got a nice 3 hour ride with the SEALs coming back from a mission out in the philippines on the Mark V. I had a hard on from the engine, it was awesome
lol, i feel you man. i heard those twin turbines warming up as we were in the no wake zone, and i said to the LCDR or whatever walking around, that sounds like a turbo engine, to which he replied
"yep"
i knew right there that this was gonna be bitchin'
I'm positive it could hit 30+ knots today, the speed bleeds off quite fast with a turn. The main engines on these ships are replaced pretty often. The hulls are cleaned frequently. Age doesn't have a huge impact on speed on Navy ships.
looks like about 27kts maybe...USS Higgens an old ddg however...ddoubt it could hit that speed today...anyway..it's looks fun but when you life on a warship...it's pretty boring
i once was on a british Type 42 destroyer, we went starbord 45. i was on the flight deck and the ship leand over at 45 degrees and i fell overboard hahahahahaha. and that was in the south atlantic near the falaland islands
Per the intel it tops out at 45 knots. CSL 2, USS Independence, a trimaran design around 420 ft is supposed to zip through 50 knots...I'll belive it when I see it.
actually, the kitty hawk is the only non nuclear carrier in service. It should be getting decommissioned soon, if it hasn't already. But the USS Enterprise is nuclear powered.
That is a destroyer (DDG). It is powered by four LM2500 gas turbines totaling 100,000 horsepower, has two controllable pitch propellers and a top speed of 37 knots.
All Aircraft Carriers and Submarines are nuclear powered in the U.S. Navy. Not that it matters anyways, there is truly only two ships in any navy. Those are Submarines and targets. Also, CG's in the U.S. Navy are gas turbine powered.
So who makes the gas turbines for these ships? Is it GE, RR, P&W or does it differ from ship to ship, just wondering, us seabee boys dont know jack about shipboard life :)
What determines the size of a prop on these ships? Say for example that the designers chose a 15 foot diameter prop. Why that particlar size, against say a 17 foot or 13 foot prop? There has got to be a reason why a particular size prop goes on a particular ship, isn't there?
Size and tonnage with design included im sure. The props got to be large enough to propel the mass of the ship, but cant be overly large as the engines that are onboard wont be able to spin it as effective as a prop thats specifically designed for that craft. For example the engines that are build for destroyers cant possibly use a prop thats designed for a carrier the way it needs to. And same for a carrier, it wont go anywhere if its got a prop thats designed for a destroyer.
Fast enough to water ski. Arleigh-Burkes can maintain speed of around 35knts which is aprox 40mph. The scary thing is, so can the Nimitz class. 100,000 tons of carrier moving at 40mph is an awesome sight.
Well yeah, but at max displacement they can top 100,000. Normal operational tonnage is usually between 80,000-90,000 tons. Light load is around 75,000. Regardless, the Nimitz class moves incredibly fast for a vessel its size and weight. Even yet the elder Iowa class can move their 45,000 ton frames around at 34knts. Remarkable engineering is what it is.
It's fun even on a bigger ship like a CVN. It's kind of strange walking through the hanger bay and seeing blue sky out one end and nothing but water on he other end.
