  • what was the name of the second song he played?

  • What's the argument lol? All the drummers mentioned are great drummers, have nice resumes. Their drumming style fits who they play for, I couldn't imagine any other drummer playing Giants like how napper did

  • Lmao I love music drums play to, it always sounds like arcaded music. Calvin's nice though.

  • is that the emperor x on his snare

  • good stuff

  • Yo anyone know what the first song is called?

  • nice

  • if you can't keep time why are you playing drums? end of all arguments ever... pocket > w/e else.

  • yep youre so right bro, pocket is the key. and good timing and placements.

  • i have played with alot of major gospel artist why ? because of my ability to keep a pocket. ask yourself this question why is it today with all these gifted drummers out there alot of them don't have gigs? answer, all flash and no pocket!!!! when you guys get a resume like calvin napper than you guys can talk other wise listen and learn peace.

  • to all you new jack drummers first let me say that i think that all of the up and comming drummers are missing the point . all the chops and licks are good don't get me wrong but in there place. the bottomline is our job is to keep time and the only way you can keep good time is to develop a consistant pocket period!!! i an 44yrsold and i have over 30yrs in the gospel drumming arena and still holding it down

  • BigDaddyFoote50 ... you basically wrapped it up for me there ... lol . Plus ... all drummers that have great pocket ... have AMAZING chops. Maybe I'll check you out because you on the right rode right now. Thank you for breaking it down for those people at that level. Interesting Thing: Did you know that most of the best gospel drummers use Yamaha? Its kind of crazy, but it's cool

    Thanks For a Nice Comment!

    Peace,

    The Drum Commentator.

  • THANK YOU!!!!!

That goes for all genres as well.....if you can't hold a pocket with the correct dynamics you're not gonna get any work...PERIOD.....because playing pocket is one thing but playing with volume based on where your venue is located is another thing. :)

  • I agree with you THETHEORYLIVES!!!! Its not about licks or hotness!! There are MANY great gospel drummers in the industry!! Its foolish to try to compare these guys!!

One correction....jmf80916....Calvin has done MANY great records but no one has done more gospel records on drums than Terry Baker! Learn you Gospel History before you speak out next time!!! All of the guys mentioned are great musicians but bigger than that...they are great minstrels!!! Blessings to all!!!

  • Guys, don't get stuck on who'd be considered the gr8est, the freshest, or the most abstract. Every musician must share the common goal of "motive", and that's what TRUE MUSICIANS DO! Put each one of these drummers in the room2gether, and here's what YOU, as well as they, would learn: "THERE'S STILL MORE TO LEARN AND APPLY." There's none gr8er on this earth. Every1 of you who commented: Don't get caught up who YOU consider the best. MUSIC IS TOO UNIVERSAL FOR A STATUS. Be blessed!

  • @THETHEORYLIVES You just wrapped up in a nutshell. There are MANY great musicians, but none will EVER be the GREATEST. No matter what anyone's opinion may be, truthfully there's no one who is the GREATEST, and no matter our skill level as musicians, there's ALWAYS more to LEARN AND APPLY. TRUE MUSICIANS don't consider any one person "better" than the other. We learn from each other. No one is the BEST. As musicians, we're always STUDENTS because there's always more to be learned.

  • Anyone who stops being a student and considers themselves the best or greatest, they're only fooling themselves. Be blessed everyone!

  • aint got shit on eric moore or brent easton

  • t you

  • Fuck eric moore... I would put him on a gig. Stick to the guitar center shit. yo ass must cant play....

  • so u sayin this nigga is better than eric moore...go fuck urself...u must be sorry as hell...this nigga aint shit on him...and have u heard him play for a gig

  • and for your info calvin played micah stampley's first cd

  • whats up with the cursing?

  • Dude ur crazy Calvin napper is the truth as a drummer and a composer. U doosh bag!!!!! U don't know what the hell ur talking about!!!!

  • yeah you all about fills, it ain't bout fills it about pocket presence

  • he changed snares.

  • this guy is sick dude

  • O cara é bom manoww !!!

  • Calvin Napper Vs. Calvin Rodgers

  • Napper's good but no match for Calvin Rodgers!

  • See you get wat im sayin!! Rodgers would eat Napper alive=)

  • what. i think there even. seriously. but look up. brent easton tell me what u think

  • You are a faggot

  • You're a faggot. Napper is the coldest Calvin in gospel music

  • UH just cuz you think calvin rodgers has an attitude problem dont mean he aint the hottest out there. He has played on more albums than anybody so take ur beef and give it to somebody else. Napper still is good dont get me wrong but calvin is that new hotness.

  • @ocbfdog dude are you honestly serious

  • brent easton

  • Both of you are faggots. Napper is funkier and more seasoned than Rogers. Rogers has great moments, Napper makes good records.

  • WTF I cant understand that count beyond 2 measures, on the beginning of the second song!! he somehow starts the song perfectly. IMPECABLE TIMING! I listen to it like 15 times strait and it confuses me every time. I'M usually good @ decoding odd time. DAM IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's 3/4... gotta catch the count as soon as the guitar comes in... I'm almost positive

  • right dude! i know the time is but when i try to tap the time wit a pen to see what he doin, by the time the music kick it IM off timing! and i have good timing lol...that solo was STUPID SICK!!!

  • my heart just dropped when i heard that ride.

  • Yea! that Sabian HH raw bell is amazing! I like HH medium heavy 20" too!

  • can some one tell me what that wood thing is on his snare

  • It's for ur rim shots. I gives u more sound than just hitting a the rim.

  • its called a groove wedge.

  • He's Tight!! Loving the pocket

  • i wanna know wut kind of heads r those?...

  • They look like Remo Emperors

  • oh he is killin! as usual! who did those tracks for him???

  • Honestly I need to start manipulating time like this....This awesome!

  • You thinks it is easy?

  • It's not and I know that. Nothing comes easy in drumming but with a lot of good practice and time, nothing is impossible.

  • Very well spoken! Very true... Nothing is impossible!!

  • Both of them use the Steve Jordan joint.

  • he makes ghost note on the hihat instead..

  • yeah doc!

  • i like the way u played with the time

  • lexuspimpin, YOU SAID THAT!

  • great technique

  • This is my dream at night! i LOVE this!

  • this dude is all about timing. nice to see that once in a while instead of all chopping which i also dont mind.

  • My sentiments exactly. Don't mind it, but it's nice to know there's more than that.

  • I have seen some comments on his other vids that he is not that good------uh right.

Incredible timing. He just doesn't ghost note on the snare constantly or over-play.

  • Dude's timing is crazy. He starts his songs with no click.

  • @Demetriwalker Actually I'm sure he has a click in his ears when he recorded this and when they finished recording this they took out the click and put the non click version in the video.

  • Has anyone noticed that if you highlight a comment with your cursor, the whole box, not just the lines of text, and hold the button, that the background still turns blue but the words are black instead of white? And if you keep holding the button and pass over the words they turn white? What the heck is that all about?

  • I guess no one noticed.

  • perfect timing! he hits every single lick.. he reminds me of Dave weckl

  • Yeah, there's a definite Weckl influence in there. That's the first thing I thought too.

I have my picture with Weckl and a pair of his sticks he played. Jealous???

  • coon

  • its not just his timing which is so amazing, its his understanding of the time and rhythm hes playing, which enables him to do what he does while the rest of us mortals try to copy and fail

  • Yea that 1st fill is crazy

  • Somebody tell me how he is counting the first fill the he does in his studio session cause I'm getting lost every time. That fill is out this world.

  • Start counting 9/8 when he starts.

  • that's crazy. how did you figure that out?

  • The solo part didn't give it away at first - like he could've just been sick with phrasing in 4/4, but then the backing groove came in and you can obviously hear that it's odd, so then it's just a matter of counting.

  • very good

  • I love that snare.....Koon gets rid of the sterotype that gospel based drummers plays with high pitched or torqued out snares

  • is that the steve jordan snare?

  • Yessir! With a groove wedge!

  • that's almost a 500.00 Snare that Yamaha makes

  • Yeah because Steve Jordan's snare is made out maple of that is harvested from forests that are replanted so that the resource is replenished so it can be environmentally friendly.

  • great drumming love the pocket thats how i play

  • Oh he got the GHOST down, don't he?

  • do your thing bro......love it!!!

  • i like the way u played with the time

  • Calvin Napper is the best drummer out there.

  • God those GHOST NOTES, I LOVE THEM!

  • Soo locked, didnt really know his name, but knows the music to a T....

  • Cool.

  • Coon is my favorite drummer. His pocket and grooves are flawless.

  • Brilliant! Got 2 get it! lol. Thanks Calvin Napper.

  • Love it..You da man..His pocket is waayy tight. If you get a chance to see him Live..GO..real nice guy..The pic on his website homepage was take at my church, when

Donald Lawrence came a few months ago..Donald was great and the band ripped it..

  • He is the beast example for pocket drumming nobody should ever sleep on him.

  • BLIING~FKN~BLIIING! This is one the most bestest-est! vidjos Ieva did c of Napper

  • Whoa! FATEFUL! Fancy meeting u here. If my MEMORY serve me correct, Mr. Napper's ur reason for drummin? or NO~? Anyway, I'm glad ur back on keys now. That wedding shedding is pretty professional at the beginning and end.

  • I'm investing Zildjian Ks! Some1 one help me, Lord! Where's the best place to invest in some! Thank God CalviNapper by the way!

  • Yeah man!! That's what's up! Love it and sir you are the BUSINESS!!

  • That's my boy Calvin! Chea!
