What's the argument lol? All the drummers mentioned are great drummers, have nice resumes. Their drumming style fits who they play for, I couldn't imagine any other drummer playing Giants like how napper did
i have played with alot of major gospel artist why ? because of my ability to keep a pocket. ask yourself this question why is it today with all these gifted drummers out there alot of them don't have gigs? answer, all flash and no pocket!!!! when you guys get a resume like calvin napper than you guys can talk other wise listen and learn peace.
to all you new jack drummers first let me say that i think that all of the up and comming drummers are missing the point . all the chops and licks are good don't get me wrong but in there place. the bottomline is our job is to keep time and the only way you can keep good time is to develop a consistant pocket period!!! i an 44yrsold and i have over 30yrs in the gospel drumming arena and still holding it down
BigDaddyFoote50 ... you basically wrapped it up for me there ... lol . Plus ... all drummers that have great pocket ... have AMAZING chops. Maybe I'll check you out because you on the right rode right now. Thank you for breaking it down for those people at that level. Interesting Thing: Did you know that most of the best gospel drummers use Yamaha? Its kind of crazy, but it's cool
That goes for all genres as well.....if you can't hold a pocket with the correct dynamics you're not gonna get any work...PERIOD.....because playing pocket is one thing but playing with volume based on where your venue is located is another thing. :)
I agree with you THETHEORYLIVES!!!! Its not about licks or hotness!! There are MANY great gospel drummers in the industry!! Its foolish to try to compare these guys!!
One correction....jmf80916....Calvin has done MANY great records but no one has done more gospel records on drums than Terry Baker! Learn you Gospel History before you speak out next time!!! All of the guys mentioned are great musicians but bigger than that...they are great minstrels!!! Blessings to all!!!
Guys, don't get stuck on who'd be considered the gr8est, the freshest, or the most abstract. Every musician must share the common goal of "motive", and that's what TRUE MUSICIANS DO! Put each one of these drummers in the room2gether, and here's what YOU, as well as they, would learn: "THERE'S STILL MORE TO LEARN AND APPLY." There's none gr8er on this earth. Every1 of you who commented: Don't get caught up who YOU consider the best. MUSIC IS TOO UNIVERSAL FOR A STATUS. Be blessed!
@THETHEORYLIVES You just wrapped up in a nutshell. There are MANY great musicians, but none will EVER be the GREATEST. No matter what anyone's opinion may be, truthfully there's no one who is the GREATEST, and no matter our skill level as musicians, there's ALWAYS more to LEARN AND APPLY. TRUE MUSICIANS don't consider any one person "better" than the other. We learn from each other. No one is the BEST. As musicians, we're always STUDENTS because there's always more to be learned.
so u sayin this nigga is better than eric moore...go fuck urself...u must be sorry as hell...this nigga aint shit on him...and have u heard him play for a gig
UH just cuz you think calvin rodgers has an attitude problem dont mean he aint the hottest out there. He has played on more albums than anybody so take ur beef and give it to somebody else. Napper still is good dont get me wrong but calvin is that new hotness.
WTF I cant understand that count beyond 2 measures, on the beginning of the second song!! he somehow starts the song perfectly. IMPECABLE TIMING! I listen to it like 15 times strait and it confuses me every time. I'M usually good @ decoding odd time. DAM IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
right dude! i know the time is but when i try to tap the time wit a pen to see what he doin, by the time the music kick it IM off timing! and i have good timing lol...that solo was STUPID SICK!!!
@Demetriwalker Actually I'm sure he has a click in his ears when he recorded this and when they finished recording this they took out the click and put the non click version in the video.
Has anyone noticed that if you highlight a comment with your cursor, the whole box, not just the lines of text, and hold the button, that the background still turns blue but the words are black instead of white? And if you keep holding the button and pass over the words they turn white? What the heck is that all about?
its not just his timing which is so amazing, its his understanding of the time and rhythm hes playing, which enables him to do what he does while the rest of us mortals try to copy and fail
The solo part didn't give it away at first - like he could've just been sick with phrasing in 4/4, but then the backing groove came in and you can obviously hear that it's odd, so then it's just a matter of counting.
Yeah because Steve Jordan's snare is made out maple of that is harvested from forests that are replanted so that the resource is replenished so it can be environmentally friendly.
Love it..You da man..His pocket is waayy tight. If you get a chance to see him Live..GO..real nice guy..The pic on his website homepage was take at my church, when
Donald Lawrence came a few months ago..Donald was great and the band ripped it..
Whoa! FATEFUL! Fancy meeting u here. If my MEMORY serve me correct, Mr. Napper's ur reason for drummin? or NO~? Anyway, I'm glad ur back on keys now. That wedding shedding is pretty professional at the beginning and end.
Yea!! I love Calvin Napper. He is my inspiration when it comes to drums...at least! And that good offbeat drummer at around 2:53 or so into 3. Lovin' this!
what was the name of the second song he played?

zaorulesmetal 3 years ago
I have seen some comments on his other vids that he is not that good------uh right.
Incredible timing. He just doesn't ghost note on the snare constantly or over-play.
VAP956 3 years ago
