Did you see the thousands of tapes in those racks? That magnetic tape would be about 35 to 38 years old by now. Media life expectancy for magnetic tape us universally considered to be about thirty years. To preserve the information, they would have had to budget archival conservators to take all those reels (and I'm sure there are warehouses more of that stuff) and transfer it to new technology over and over as technologies come and go. The data didn't stop with Apollo. It grows exponentially.

NASA didn't lose all the original footage. They only misplaced some of A11. 5 other missions are completely intact. Quit being so gullible believing everything on Friggin Google. SHEESH! THIIIIINK! It's even less than that. The ground stations recorded the raw received signal (voice+telemetry+video) on a wideband instrumentation recorder as a BACKUP in case the TV scan converter failed. It didn't fail, so the tapes were surplus. It would have been nice to keep them because we can do a better conversion job now, but the information certainly isn't lost.

The complete transcripts are openly available, and a LOT of the telemetry data is plotted and analyzed in the mission reports. Read them.
