The champ isn't a suitable plane for outdoor flight IMO. Its just too small and too easily effected by the wind. Its great for indoor flight though.
I think most people will be happier with a hawk sky types, considering its essentially in the same price range. The hawk sky, sky surfer, bixler are all easy to repair.
The best "glider"/ beginner I have seen that is both good on performance and great on price is the Banana Hobby Sky Surfer. I t is pretty much a hawk sky...
First plane i flew was a Zagi many years ago which was awesome. Fisrt powered was hobbyzone champ and im in the minority here but personally i thought it sucked, slightest breeze and you couldnt do anything with it. Sold it and got an axn floater jet which is amazing!!! It can handle a breeze, glides really well and you can fly it reasonably slow and also has some speed if you want to zip it around the field
i bought this plane and about 10 extra batterys cause i wana hurry up and learn to fly rc because i dont want to wreck my Airfield 1400mm P-40, P-51 Mustang, and Durafly Spitfire!!! stupid learning curve!!
Okay RcSuperPowers my dad got me for Christmas Remote Control Plane, He got me a ElectraFun 2.4G it is 4 channel 2.4GHz Radio Installed and It looks Like the Hawk Sky Except the Motor isn't sticking out of the roof. I tested it out today (27/12/11 AUS So it is DD/MM/YY) it is SUPER Good to Crash it won't wreck the wing much and if you do dent the wing you can use your fingers to put it back into place. I highly Recommend this for any Beginner! Plus you might want to do a review about it
My hero. He is right about everything. Love the corse. I bought it and I have been flying for years. Another great trainer is the apprentice because parts are in local hobby shops. But too much money. The supper cub is good also but no ailerons. Gets boring fast. Adding ailerons is not hard.
hobbyking bixler is better and cheaper and it only cost me $88 all up with post but i got the one with no tx and rx but its bigger to and able to take more wind then the hawk sky
can you make a trainer out of dollar tree foam board with dowel rods and if possible landing gear i have tried to learn how to fly with the wrong plans and have the electronics but mot enough money to by a arf rxr or rtf plane kit and like this for cheapness and easy to repair and you can build the PERFECT trainer plane but you can build more wings to make sportier or a slow flyer
I bought an airplane for about $100 including shipping. It is the I CAN FLY by Dynam, it is a very good airplane for a beginner. Considering this was my first 'real' rc airplane, I fly it pretty good! I've crashed it many times and broke lots of things, including the engine mount, (it's a pulling prop) but it still flies good as new! Well worth the money! Also, it is a high wing, so its very stable!!! Great Airplane!!!
Hi Dave, You are right!! this plane is awesome. I use it for FPV as well, because it almost flies itself - if the COG is correct ;-) Marc from germany
Hi Dave,I havnt flown any models like this, only built up models back in the 70s.I want to get back into flying, the AXN Floater looks very good on the videos(especially on the 'xjet' site)carriage very expensive to the UK though, but the Clouds Fly version looks identical and is available from the only UK dealer I could find who stock it 'brchobbies' Its on my Christmas wish list. Happy Christmas to you all, keep up the good work in 2012.I really enjoy your videos.Derek.Somerset UK.
I learned on a 3ch slow stick then moved up to a T28 and up from there. I would also add to upgrading radio systems before getting a new plane. Meaning get the rtf hawksky or cub then getting a dx6i or dx8 after one has learned to fly and learning all the functions with the trainer they know how to fly. I find it is easier than the jump of new plane and transmitter at the same time.
GWS Pico Tigermoth, the easiest flying plane I've ever flown. The hardest part is putting it together. You can fly it slower than you can run and do so in a 50ft circle. Check my earlier vids for footage of that, I love it!
I did all the beginner stuff on the simulator, flew and crash for a couple months on the simulator and got the Parkzone micro p-51. I had it for months now and the only crash was when the battery fell out of the plane after i did a loop.
@RCFlyer132 You aren't the only one that has that problem with simulators. I wreck planes in the sim all the time, but I've only ever incurred minor damage with my plane (PZ UMT-28). Nice thing about those little birds is most fixes are pretty easy, and if that's no good, replacing whatever part is pretty cheap.
Park Zone T-28 or E-Flite Apprentice because they have strong landing gear, powerful brushless motor, lipo, battery and balance charger, 4 channels and a spektrum radio
SLOWSTICK FTW!!!. My first plane was the big yellow glider rc powers had. Forgot the name the big yellow plane. That sounds a bit wrong. Mine might been a dud. It didn`t have enough power so it crashed and killed it self. I probably failed too.
idk if its just me or not but this channel has seriously lost my interest lately. there hasn't been as much "new" and "exciting" content in any of the videos. I miss the good ol RCPowers days when Dave was experimenting with the X-36 and the F-35 VTOL and you never knew what you were gonna see each week. Innovation in the world of R/C was what we expected each week. And Dave don't get me wrong, I have great respect for you and I have really been entertained by your videos in the past. but now...
Most of us old suckers learned how to fly on planes we built ourselves and often had no clue how to fly. After repairing many times and going through 2-3 planes only the persistent learned to fly.
Im prob gonna try to get the wild hawk from santa... Altho my math teacher recomended the hobby zone super cub last year but i saw more on the wild hawk from you guys :)
i started out many moons ago flying a zagi, motor is in the back, i wrecked it alot and it didnt break to the point of no return, its really stable on the roll and it has tons of lift so it floats a little when needed, just my opinion

@alonsoflight Nexstar is a good fun plane to learn on, and i still own one..If you go this route you will be fine and enjoy..However my first gas plane was actually the hangar9 p51mustang rtf..Which i thought the deal was better because you get a progamable radio "DX6i"- not to mention a really sweet looking plane. And if you turn off the "ACT"=auto crash technology on the Nexstar you will find both are equally as easy to fly .But simulators save 1000's
i started with a hobbyzone super cub (the brushed one). Never had problems with it. never broke a propeller. Hit every tree in my park with it, it still flies good as new. Highly recommend it :)
Not quite begginner level , but i had alot of fun with Yardbird 22, i dont know if you guys are familiar with this product very similiar to some things you guys do with yours tho.
I started with the AXN Floater Jet. I learnt to fly on it and now have one that I fly for fun all the time. Costs less than $40 for the ARF version or you can get the PNP version for about $65. The AXN flies great, bounces when I crash and is fun to fly.
I have flown mine in 25 knots of wind and rain with no problems. It will even thermal. See the XJET channel for great flying video of this model.
Dave, I have an experimental plane challenge for YOU.... GEV...Ground Effect Vehicle looks pretty cool but in need motors and controls....channel HavenMade
@RiderBackBomber That's what Dave or some of you other guys should figure out... and make a PDF of it, add motors, servos, see what you can get it to do, and add that RCPowers custom touch to it, TO MAKE IT FIRST, and make it cool!!!
@MrRockoutLoud I bought the skyfly MAX and is a good model, is very easy to fly is an aerobatic model, I had been making loops with the plane I get started with that plane
This is a good plane to begin with I experienced. Has 5 channels (bomb bay+hatch).
Has a high wing desing, easy to fly, and land, although you should put on some bigger wheels (200%) because otherwise take-off and landing are somewhat hard.
My first "successful" plane was the aerobird swift, it was light and very fast if wanted it had a and b control rates, great plane. I just wanted to say that the act or "anti crash technology is a good theory but only works if you are flying above the horizon. Which most beginners will not be doing so it is a bogus technology
when i first started out, i was flying a firebird POS. then i moved up to an aerobird challenger i think (not a bad pick at all). now i'm flying a blade msr and realflight g3 on my laptop because the planes got trashed.
In my case, it's the Nine Eagles Sky Runner, looks and flys just like the wild hawlk, just smaller and has 2.4 ghz radio, aswell the range is very good. Just last August I took it up to about 800 ft from about 150 ft and glided it for about 45 mins and the battery is a very very small 7.4 volt 2 cell and that alown will make the plane fly for about 20 mins. The wing span is 70 cm (27.4 inchs) and it has dihedral, I would recomend it to anyone.
My first plane was the Supercub LP. fantastic plane. the ACT (Anti Crash Technology) works well for a beginner but eventually it gets annoying but you can easily turn it off with a switch. The only problem is if you want to upgrade or put your own radio in it you have to take out all the electronics except the motor. But still it is a very stable beginner plane and you can get every part spare for it.
Hey man, I'm looking for a plane for good hd aerial photography for in movies. But is it possible with this plane? Because I know I need two gyro's (longitudinal and lateral axis) for stabilization plus the hd cam (about 200 gram). Isn't this too heavy for the plain? Or do you have any other suggestions? And I try to keep the costs down because I'm sixteen. Thanks
I started on a dopy 2 channel (thrust and rudder) HobbyZone thing (The now firebird commander?). It was awesome to say the least, almost impossible to break and replacement parts were cheap and easy to come by. I liked the Swift (discontinued name, but has a sibling plane) with THREE channels (throttle roll and up/down) but that was sadly extremely under powered and very fragile. I got these planes maybe 3-4 years ago and only recently did i can them due to age.
I honestly loved the Hobby Zone super cub! That was my step up on 3 ch many years ago and I love the way it flies. Even as a pro now doing FPV, 3D and everything in between, ill still take the cub out and fly
I never had a beginner plane, i started the hobby with a 4 chanal 3D plane, it was hella fast, had lot of throw on the conrols... it was really hard to control it, but after a couple of repairs, i learned how to fly rc...
@daleyb93 , From simsdarryle, Im the instructor pilot at our field and ive seen it all come through here, easystars, 182's slow sticks, you name it and ive flown it, (Electric) and right out of the box for a newbee pilot who wants a 4ch setup with good power, and a good size model that handel's well in the wind and a pretty good sport flyer, I recommend the Apprentice. You need to take one up and try it, trust me, she's alot of fun!!! :)
My first real r/c plane was a "Grupner R/C Uhu" with motor it´s made out of Balsa. flys realy god and it´s for a beginner plane a little bit fast witch is grate if you get better.
I startet with a Cessna 182 EPO 141. To havy, to shiny, and to scared to crash it... Ended up learning to fly with the "Clouds fly" aka. "axn floater jet". I just LOVE it! I am about to order one more today. Its the best beginner airplane out there! Crash it, tape it up again, smash it, tape it up again and so on. Just remember to do the basic chechlist before flying. My latest crash was a simple "checklist-error". Forgot to check the control surfice, and flying with only up elevator...
The MULITPLEX EASY STAR was the first of this generation? flys ok nicad and brushed if you want, though limited to calmer weather (so is a begginer). mine is now 6 channel (spoilerons/flaps) brushless/lipo. plenty of utube extreme versions. bought for 'non field' flying - forced the rudder only version into rolls, outside loop/inverted. thermals well! install servo cable in the spar slot for later & slit in carbon spars extending beyond the wing servo position. pricier though you can get spares.
I am just going to ask is have you looked at parkzone micro? I have a parkzone j3, vapor ,and a p-51. I would recomend the parkzone vapor as a beginer airplane.
The E-Flite Apprentice was my first plane and I have no regrets. It is easy to fly, easy to land, very powerful and is capable of all kinds of basic tricks once you learn how to fly. $300 with a transmitter, charger and battery. Hard to beat it. And parts are readily available.
A 3 ch plane is best for beginners I think, as you can learn how to actually fly that thing, without worrying about the roll so you can first get the main 2 controll such as up-down-left-right :) Then when you feel safe and experienced enough, move on to a 4 channel and (cheaper one) then build some hours and of course break it 2-3 times, then you are ready for a nice 4ch pro RC, but of course, thats what I think
It has all the above specification and it flies better, smoother and faster than the hawk sky. (I own the HS as a first plane) The Skysurfer/bixler is more SILENT than a pusher plane with 6x4E prop mod and you can mod it for FLAPS not FLAPERONS. It's also a great plane for leisure flying, not only a trainer plane.
Easy Star is great but you need to make a few mods which is probably not so good for beginners. The rudder is a bit small and it has no ailerons, once I added them and enlarged the rudder it was just great. Why don´t Multiplex do that?
Easystar is good. I also think Hobby King's Bixler might be a better choice even though I haven't flown one yet. The EasyStar lacks ailerons and a large enough rudder, so modifications are a must. The Bixler is basically an EasyStar clone with these modifications already done.
Totally agree on the ANX Floater Jet. It works, period. I have a mate who smashed his AXN nose-first at full throttle almost everything survived. Fuselage and other foam pieces were taped with masking tape like a mummy and it continued to fly for the rest of the day! No Hot Glue, not Duct Tape, not CA. Crashed or Smashed, the ANX Floater Jet is just pure fun in every way!
@simsdarryle Not from personal experience but working in a hobby shop I have seen it and the box contents etc, looks VERY heavy and breakable to my eyes for a first time flyer. But then again I wouldn't know, haven't flown one.
@RCOZZEE thats my favorite plane yet, and I've been flying for a year and half, its a great mix between fast plane and glider, easy to fly slowly and plenty fast when you hit the throttle
@DangerousDan666 I Know ITS AWESOME and I fly all sorts of stuff from scale to jets to helis, but I love the AXN :) When you cant fly anything you can still fly that and so cheap to replace if you lawn dart it :)
Maybe one of you guys can help me out. I got the hawk sky as my beginner plane only to find that the rudder servo doesn't work. Is there a way to replace it without having to split the plane down the middle? I don't think I'm quite ready for that. Thanks for any help you might be able to give.
USE A FLIGHT SIM FIRST! #1 rule. Even if it's a buddy's sim. Borrow it for a week and you are set. I used a flight sim (Real Flight G5) for a month before I got a chance to buddy box for my first time. My instructor took off for me, but I was able to land on my first buddy box session. The video is on my channel too :D best day of my life.
mt altime favorite is the e-flite apprentice and i highly recomend it. once your bord of flying around you can even do aerobatics but the best reason to buy this plane s the stabillity. it's size doesn't let wind push it around and it just fly's great i might buy a diamond2500 or maybe an airfield 140mm zero.
AXN Clouds Fly from hobby king is great, that was my first non scratch built plane, its still one on my favorits, it has a good speed envelope, docile flight characteristics, can handle a bit of wind, made from durable and repairable EPO foam, and its brushless stock, oh did i mention DIRT CHEAP, the XJET youtube channel has a lot of videos on the plane
I started with the Calmato 40 Trainer GP, but that´s because I´m naturally good at flying..

i started with a hobbyzone super cub (the brushed one). Never had problems with it. never broke a propeller. Hit every tree in my park with it, it still flies good as new. Highly recommend it :)

@maxjosephwheeler that just looks like a plane without pitch control
RiderBackBomber 3 months ago
@RiderBackBomber That's what Dave or some of you other guys should figure out... and make a PDF of it, add motors, servos, see what you can get it to do, and add that RCPowers custom touch to it, TO MAKE IT FIRST, and make it cool!!!

I have the skyfly MAX now in christmas I will buy the Nexstar from Hobbico

My beginner's plane was PDF-one form MikeyRC on Youtube, SportTrainer!
Two-peace flat-foamy plane despite the fact prop was in front, it was the best choise I could have! So easy to repair/modify and fly!!
Only draw-back: prop in front, but with ruber bants it's okey after all! :)

the flyzone skyfly (the original one) was what i started with. and i think the skyfly MAX might be good

Hype U Can Fly// Flyzone Sensei (same plane).

MrTimmyv93 3 months ago
when i first started out, i was flying a firebird POS. then i moved up to an aerobird challenger i think (not a bad pick at all). now i'm flying a blade msr and realflight g3 on my laptop because the planes got trashed.

The wing span is 70 cm (27.4 inchs) and it has dihedral, I would recomend it to anyone.
planeops123 3 months ago
My first plane was the Supercub LP. fantastic plane. the ACT (Anti Crash Technology) works well for a beginner but eventually it gets annoying but you can easily turn it off with a switch. The only problem is if you want to upgrade or put your own radio in it you have to take out all the electronics except the motor. But still it is a very stable beginner plane and you can get every part spare for it.

I realy like the wing dragon. My first ''real'' plane was a wing dragon sportster. It can take alot of crash. Its 4ch and got propp at the back.

Thanks
bp97borispolsek 3 months ago
I started on a dopy 2 channel (thrust and rudder) HobbyZone thing (The now firebird commander?). It was awesome to say the least, almost impossible to break and replacement parts were cheap and easy to come by. I liked the Swift (discontinued name, but has a sibling plane) with THREE channels (throttle roll and up/down) but that was sadly extremely under powered and very fragile. I got these planes maybe 3-4 years ago and only recently did i can them due to age.

The Fenix powered gliders are by far the best beginner planes. They cost under $100!
DistructiveRC 3 months ago
The E-Flite Apprentice was my first plane and I have no regrets. It is easy to fly, easy to land, very powerful and is capable of all kinds of basic tricks once you learn how to fly. $300 with a transmitter, charger and battery. Hard to beat it. And parts are readily available.

A 3 ch plane is best for beginners I think, as you can learn how to actually fly that thing, without worrying about the roll so you can first get the main 2 controll such as up-down-left-right :) Then when you feel safe and experienced enough, move on to a 4 channel and (cheaper one) then build some hours and of course break it 2-3 times, then you are ready for a nice 4ch pro RC, but of course, thats what I think
batahan 3 months ago
1. EPO Foam construction
2. Glides
3. Motor at the back (Pusher)
4. Brushless setup ESC+Motor
5. LiPo battery
6. Sky Surfer/Bixler and here is why.

MrPopracing 3 months ago
Easy Star is great but you need to make a few mods which is probably not so good for beginners. The rudder is a bit small and it has no ailerons, once I added them and enlarged the rudder it was just great. Why don´t Multiplex do that?
24262748 3 months ago
p.s. the Bixler, Hawk Sky etc. etc are all really a clone of the Easystar, really any of those would be a winner.(motor at the back).
GPEART1 3 months ago
Easystar==Awesome.Once you learn to fly it,you can then "hot rod" it (bigger, faster motor), and its a screamer, really a lot of fun!
GPEART1 3 months ago
AXN is a good plane because it is a great plane from beginner to advanced pilot and it is not that expensive from Hobbyking .

i would not recommend the rear engine planes, they just dont fly like real planes and they are ALOT more tempermental
javelinthrower1 3 months ago
easyglider or easystar
45Cuber 3 months ago
