@ennisel They are a group that originally formed in the 80s, and they have been going ever since, changing members as needed. You can learn more about them on Wikipedia, and they also have a website... Acappella . org
They are singing to the God of ALL people. They are the absolute best and if you don't know about their long reaching ministry, you should go to their site and read about them. What a blessing they are.
A Happy thought: If freedom is like an un-cracked liberty bell...then when they ask "for whom the bell tolls (toils?)" then you can happily say "She toils for me...." Is this a happy thought Internet community?

what is the name of this group? They can sing! I like this version of lift every voice. I wish I could sing it like them...they sound good and make me proud to be a Black American.
My only criticism would be that the one white guy with the high pitched voice, when he did his solo, they never put the camera on him whatsoever... they just cut to the choir - they didn't do that to any of the other guys when they were solo-ing. Hmmmm...
The white guy never did a solo...it was a combination of 2 singing groups...Acappella and AVB, who had white and black people in both groups. They chose to feature all of the black singers on this particular song, including a wife of one of the members. This song is also known as the "black national anthem", so they thought it fitting to be this way. The white singers are on the vid as backup singers...
Are u 100% sure? At :08 of the song, you hear and see the white guy sing "of every nation". Isn't the singing at 2:33 - 2:55 sung by that white guy, coz i'm a 99.9% sure that it wasn't one of the pictured choir members that sung that part, coz 4 sure it is a guy's falsetto. "Facing the rising sun... ... 'till victory is won." The falsetto part sounds quite like the white guy at the start. Idk?
Thanks for filling in the details. I remember either seeing that on the album cover at the time, or hearing it from some of the other members of group. That was a long time ago! Great arrangement.
Really? I thought it was Gary Moyers who sang at the beginning of the song the text..."all over the nation..." I thought that's what the poster was referring to...
I could be wrong though...I wouldn't be the first time...
Oh ok. Cool. I was just watching the video thinking that whoever's lips were sync'd to the voice that was currently singing WAS the actual person singing that part. (apparently not). What part did Duane sing, or he was just backround vocals? And thanks for clearing up my misconceptions!
Sorry, I'm trying not to sound all racist n shit coz i'm not about that dumb shit!!! I was also wondering when they originally made the song, was it dubbed as the "black national anthem" or was that what it has come to be known as? In my eyes, I don't really think of it as the Black National Anthem, coz that statement alone sounds kind of racist when you pair it with the song. The Star Spangled Banner isn't the "white national anthem", it is for all who reside in the U.S.,... continued...
... continued... no matter what color, race, etc. From personal experience, I figure when you put labels on things, it brings expectations, which in turn brings complications, etc. The fact is, that this is a kickass song, one of which stands out more than most others because of the alluring and glorious message it sends to all of its' listeners, no matter what color/race you are. The song could be applied to numerous overcome struggles of many, race, etc. irrelevant. That's just my thoughts.
It was simply labeled BY SOME at a later time if I recall correctly. I'm not going that deep into it to be honest with you...it can apply to everyone who seeks freedom or who has been gracious to experience it. It doesn't have to become yet another racial debate on youtube just because I mentioned that the sone is known by some to be that other title...Bottom line, it's a great song with a great message, and I think it's a great arrangement. Peace to you...
Yes, I know Wayburn, he is my Brother and a he is a very good guy. I hate to see people using this as a forum for a racial debate. This song served a purpose. We all hope and pray that one day all black people will be judged by the content of their character, We are all one in God's eyesight whether we are red, green, black or white.
I share that dream. You are most certainly right. May we see others as God see us...very true. I happen to be a black man but more importantly a child of God. It seems like nearly every video with the title "Lift Every Voice" has those who want to stir it up. Acappella (and AVB for that matter) spread the good news in song in a powerful way, but also demonstrated in a tangible way that people of other colors can show the love of Christ...together. Be encouraged!
to eveshr6- you said more than you may have realized. white folks should not have any say on my self identity. whatever we are in god/dess' eyes, i dont want my life and feeling of well-being to depend on their tolerance. i am sure the hell not Hoping and praying to be "judged" by white people for any reason. i am hoping and praying black people will have the social, mental, economic power to be unemcumbered at any level by how whites see them, good or bad. thats the real equality.
This song was written to depict the suffering and struggles that americam blacks has endured over the years. It may not be as appropriate now as it was in the sixties. Wayburn chose this song and rearranged it for their "America" album back in the 90's. You have to understand why the song was written and at the time it was written. Google it.
aussiechic06 says "not to sound all racist" and proceeds to do what whites have always done, ie bogart our culture to their needs and comfort. so the word "black" in title bothers you, so what? what you are going to start insisting on changing the lyrics too? "hmm...i dont like the term 'bitter the chasning rod', could you take it out?" no, "miss aussie", wont be changing the name if race is really irrelevant to you as you claim, and song is universal, why would the title bother you?
One of my best experiences were to watch the first singer "teach" at our place of worship. He taught members of our singing group at the time. He was kind, thoughtful, a family man and very humble. His voice was very strong, vibrant and controlled and just as beautiful as you hear on the video. I loved watching the group in person too. I feel blessed to have met them. God bless them always~~~ Hi
wow they are so amazing and talented to be able to become instruments by just using their voices so beautifully sung and this is such a strong and inspirational song i love it
Thanks for this great rendition of the song LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING. It's not just a Black national anthem anymore. It's a soul lifting song for everyone.

They make the sound effects with their own voices , ive seen them(the group from 5 years ago) in concert 5 years ago...wish i still had their CD from that year. Amazing music.
Yeah, Wayburn, George and Jay Green attended SWCC. This was the best Acappella Group ever. I don't know if they will ever achieve this status again. Not only was these Guys great but they also had Duane Adams the most talented bass ever, he could do any run in a bass voice.
I remember singing this once at Pensacola Naval Air Station Port Side Recreation. I thaught that i was the only one that knew this song at the time but one by one guys and girls got up and joined me and a few of my other singers aing this on the stage there. Good times and great memories.
I'm white but i think blacks have been blessed with amazing voices but in Christ we are 1 no black or white but credit should be given where its deserved
Um, no George isn't Teddy's son. lol I'm a HUGE Acappella fan, my faves are Wayburn Dean, George Pendergrass and John K Green (aka Jay Green) Pure, crisp and beautiful!

Yeah, Wayburn, George and Jay Green attended SWCC. This was the best Acappella Group ever. I don't know if they will ever achieve this status again. Not only was these Guys great but they also had Duane Adams the most talented bass ever, he could do any run in a bass voice.
