I was there a few years ago in "winter". It is a beautiful, peaceful area now. There is a lot of history there the predates the troubles of the 20th century. The people there are very friendly. A project of His Majesty the King of Thailand took over a mountain where opium was grown in the 1980s. He built a retreat for his late mother there that took 20,000 acres of land out of opium production by. It has been a model that the Afghan government has also implemented.

yes, the Chinese leased the whole town for 60 years. The casino is owned and operated by the Chinese. No jobs for Laos as the employees all speak Mandarin. Looks like the government gave away Lao land to line their own pockets.
