id have to say les is one of if not my favorite bassist, but gosh people ur arguing over whos the 'best; n not one person mentions Pastorius? ........c'mon.....
@SuperAaronturner theres plenty just they all have there own thing going on look at tal wilkenfield , victor wooten, and hell in billy sheehan don't get wrong les is of the best and great innovator
@SuperAaronturner At the high level all of these bassists play at, you cannot say one is "better". I personally would take Victor Wooten over Claypool, but that does not diminish Claypool. You may like Claypools style and playing better. But at this high level of skill and playing and creativity that all these greats show, it is childish to claim one is the best. I am trying to listen to a lot of different styles and playing techniques on bass to increase my knowledge and also that of my son
@CoolKodiak I still think Wooten is better, John Entwistle is alot better also. Les is highly overrated. Once again dont get me wrong I like all of Les's projects, Bucket of Bernie Brains blew my mind the first time I heard them.
This is the Piccolo Carl Thompson 4 string. The Rainbow Bass is a 6 string, fret less Carl Thompson. Both are exclusively Les Claypool's bass, some CT's are similar, no two alike though.
The one he used in Bill and Teds Bogus Journey was made by Tune. You can see it in the Roskilde '91 Jerry video here somewhere on youtube. It was the fretless 6 string he used before he received the Rainbow Bass.
The original rainbow Bass was the one on Jerry was a race car driver. Actually, Les asked Carl to add a scroll as the balance was off. Search, "Life Beyond the 3rd Fret" if you don't believe me. From Carl himself.
its a CT bass he used with the bell sawed off. The balance was way messed up so les sawed off the bell and used it a little before shipping it back to CT
Yes, his music is ugly, we know it but you can see his awsome and unique solos and his representation of his madness. I think this is the essence of his shows. If I ever hear about claypool concert I will not have any doubt for go.
i have to say i love seeing primus live, but at the same time claypool on his own is amazing... either way i have to get my bass fix one way or anther les or primus i will be at any show he is putting on in my area...... primus sucks
when it comes down to it, claypool is probably the best technical bassist in rock, flea, geddy lee, burton come close but ive never seen them do some of the shit this guy does. amazing!
victor wooten all the way. dont get me wrong i love claypool. but i think talent wise wooten comes before him. look up... Victor Wooten Classical Thump. amazing
Les Claypool is an amazing bassist, however not an amazing singer. Personally, i think he should stick to bass but I guess his singing makes Les Claypool who he is.
Claypools new album really combines funk with a clear sound of jazz in it. and of course, were all glad cus hes still wierd as fuck, which is why we love him.
Yeah, you can find out about all les' CTs at ctbasses dot com. That one is his main bass, it's a 4 string fretted picolo (tuned 1 octave higher than a normal bass).
One of his newer CTs is gorgeous, it's a 4 string fretless, you can see him playing it in the "Les Claypool Intro Jam" video.
Headcrabb:actually he played a 6 string before he got the rainbow (the guitar in this video)
...He's not playing a six-string in this video. He's had the 4 string bass in this video ever since he started to play bass. ...And the his fretted six string is before the Rainbow bass, but that's not the bass he's using in this video.
well, im not convinced with them. im only one opinion i know, and no doubt hes an amazing bassist, like one of the all time best...but he sings thru his nose, and his music sometimes is a little too off beat for its own good. amaze the audience (which he does), but dont lose them (which he also does). primus with toned down musical arrangement/composition would be legendary. please dont flame me like you do the other guys, im stating one opinion only. thanks :D
ok i am not going to give you shit. but first you need to realize that is his voice makes him different from the rest. also it is there sound the makes the different from the rest. also you need to understand that it is mood music. but for hardcore fans like myself and the others he is the best. also it is black and white for people either you love them or you hate them and all i can say is this "PRIMUS SUCKS"
