  • Seattle's ABC affiliate KOMO was first in world to go HD in 1999, followed by KING (NBC) and KIRO (CBS). The switch was almost immediately after the FCC decision to embark on an HDTV format. Here's the catch, KING only had one HD studio camera untill around 2007.

  • They quickly fell behind-they broadcast in 480 now, not 720 or 1080. Bummer.

  • @jakeroot1 huh? i watch king 5 news in 1080p every night. they are definitely still in HD.

  • @buzzbarber925 You replied to me back when I had that old account. I watch it in HD every night as well, I just think it's so cool how much technology they had back even in 2001.

  • @jstensl Not quite the first in the world. Dallas-based WFAA-TV started broadcasting its newscasts in HD on February 28, 1997.

  • Holy shit they had HD then? Damn, Seattle is advanced.

  • What date was this recorded?

  • Novocom did these graphics. They were also used on KREM, KTVB, WHAS and KHNL, and a variation was used on Hong Kong Cable News.

  • KCRA's slogan? They got KCRA's star anchor from the 1980s, Margaret Pelley (Larson)!

  • Atleast they still use the 1999 music theme on some of their bumpers today.

  • Does anyone have an HD tuner (DID anyone have an HD tuner) back then?

  • KING and KOMO were in an HD war at the time. Seattle area home Microsoft, has alot of techies

  • Do you have anything from KIRO and KOMO from around this time? I notice this is from 2001, which is why I'm asking.

  • I should have something on VHS. I have been looking for the tapes... if I can find them, I plan to post those videos too.

  • I think they just had one HD camera back then, which was in Studio A. In 2007, they did their HD upgrade for the Queen Anne TowerCam, the rest of the studio cameras, and their graphics. I think that is when they also started taping their field reports in 16:9 format to give the illusion of HD. That is why they made such a big deal about HD last year.
