Ok, I got the recipe off a site and tried it out yesterday. Someone comments below that after 20 hours it was firm. After 20 hours mine is rock hard. Warm weather perhaps? I don't know. I'll let you know howthe fizz is...
Can I get root beer extract at the store? And another thing, can I use vanilla extract cuze I tried it with vanilla and it looked like cream soda and smelled kinda wired, is that normal?
I have a quick question: about 20 hours into the process of the yeast producing carbon dioxide, I tested the firmness of the bottle. It is very firm, especially compared to when I started. Is this normal, or should I be wary of stuff exploding?
That is normal, and you should be wary of stuff exploding. :-)
My advice: If it's very firm, go ahead and open it. Worse thing is that you'll have mildly carbonated root beer. Carbonation under these conditions is more art than science.
Yep. You can use pretty much whatever you want as flavoring. You may need to make several batches, each with different amounts of flavoring, to find how much is right for you.
Have you ever tried making root beer without the carbonation? My grandmother used to make it without carbonation, but I havent found a recipie that works for it yet.
Wow that's really cool. Have you been here before? Your relative came here with not much in his pocket but ended up making some great choices when he go so much land out here. He was quite a guy to start a place like this so long ago. This was in the 1800's. You must know your genealogy.
Hay, this was a great video. I bought the makings for root beer about a year ago but never gave it a shot yet. Thanks for the push. It's easy enough it looks like. have you experimented making any interesting blends yet?

Hmmmm. You should be able to just add root beer extract to good, clean water.

Thanks!
I've tried orange soda, but it didn't carbonate. The orange extract I bought has a lot of alcohol, which I think retarded the carbonation process.
One should be able to make ginger ale with 2 tsp ground ginger and 2 tsp lemon juice.
