My grandfather purchased new a 1950 New Yorker that was only slightly smaller than this beauty. My mother frequently borrowed, and then owned, the car. That is not likely to be a manual transmission. It is a form of automatic. Put the car in 3rd gear using the clutch, and then drive away. Lift off the gas to shift automatically. It can be shifted through the gears, but not necessary. I drove the car around the yard and often pulled out the 6-volt battery and lugged it into the basement to charge
Doesn't look so bad for it's age, but five grand does seem a bit too much to me, but I'm European, so I have no idea what the market prices are. Apparently it is cheap over there. I would have staked 3000 straight up never the less.
How does this compare in size to a big school bus? lol, it is really nice, but I would have ut a modern GM engine in it, but kept and restored the old engine for keeps.
@kendrickevans301 I can, Chrysler introduced it in 1932 or so, they called it "Knee Action" suspension, by 1950 all car makers had it, the last to introduce it was Ford in 1949.
This car goes back to a time when chrysler and the other american manufacturers built the most good looking, the fastest and overall the best cars. Too bad chrysler nowadays makes shit cars, except maybe the 300c
Now we're talking. I'd sell a kidney to own a car like this. Shame you couldn't start it but maybe next time. I'd have loved to see what worked and heard the engine.
@saabkyle04. I had two of these back in the 50's. One was a '49 Highlander the other a '50 New Yorker. The transmission has what is called "Fluid Drive".
You can go and stop without using the clutch just like an automatic, or you could shift it just like a 3 speed if you want. There was no A/C in those cars. What you were looking at were the standard heater and defroster controls. I know they are very antique looking, but yes they are the controls for the heater.
This is such a cool car. Whenever I see old cars like this, I love thinking about the history behind them. This car (and almost any old car) shows the values, beliefs, and feelings of the people 60 years ago who drove them. While some people like studying ancient, world, or U.S. History, I like studying automotive history.
My uncle once owned a car almost exactly like this, though his was fully restored and in better condition. I regret not appreciating it more when he had it.
I like historical finds like these.. really make you take a little trip back in time. I'm really curious about that name plate under the radio, says James H Jones. Maybe he was the chauffeur way back when!
This is just a restoration waiting to happen any day now. Sometimes I wonder how you find all these different vehicles from trucks - everyday cars - classics like these. lol
Damn, interior looks a bit claustrophobic, you'd expect enough room inside this car to play tennis, but it looks kinda cramped in the front, or is it just the video.
@saabkyle04 Cash for clunkers was suppose to help the american companies but the most cars that were bought were the imports. CFC should have been american brands only. It would of helped more. Dont you think so?
