  • I am really not too sure about how I feel about Taize. It kinda seems more like a conversion tool to get protestants comfortable with Catholic-y things, rather than be truly ecumenical; almost like how you would de-program ex-cult members. But anyway...from their website they are very strict on how their music should be played. I don't think they'd want the lyrics being changed to be even more ecumenical. The bible itself is not very ecumenical, which is why it was rewritten by protestants.

  • @morganhiver Taizé is not like that at all. The founder of Taizé's, frère Roger, biggest wish was to create unite all Christians and til today everything is done in Taizé and abroad to establish this in all honesty.

  • There's something odd here. I gather the original chant, of which this is clearly an adaptation, is not a Taize chant even though it is written in that style. I am trying to track down its author. The version I know goes: "There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; there is one god who is Father of all". It's a quotation from the letter of Paul to the Church in Ephesus 4 verse 5 and part of verse 6. "Misericordias Domini" is a different chant with a similar tune.

  • The original lyrics are:

    "Misericordias Domini, in aeternum cantabo."

Which is latin and means something like:

"The mercy is of the Lord, I will sing for eternity."

  • Sad how they changed to words to avoid truth.

There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism and one God and Father of all, over all, through all and within all. On each one of us God's favor has been bestowed in whatever way Christ allotted it. That is why it says: He went up to the heights, took captives, he gave gifts to humanity. When it says, 'he went up', it must mean that he had gone down to the deepest levels of the earth. The one who went down is none other than... Read Ephesians 4:5-13

  • Dont miss that this is a Christian minister singing in Synagogue. This was a great event where people from many different churches agreed that Peace is one of the most important values across all religions. Psychos who use religions to separate rather than unite stayed home. So did you.

  • Why did they choose to sing this particular song if they were offended by its lyrics? Why not choose another song that reflects their universal beliefs? I find it fascinating how people feel the need to "adjust" the creative works of others in order to fulfill their political or religious agenda. Maybe we should just change the words to "There are people, who live, and believe things". That way surely no one would be offended. We could also go back to putting fig leaves on Michelangelo's David.

  • I'm not sure what makes you think they were offended by those lyrics?? I also find it fascinating that people choose to waste time by getting offended.. If I understand correctly, they changed the lyrics to accommodate their believe system. well that seems to be a quality of all religions this adjusting reality to believe system. All that means to me is that no religion can truly grasp the truth, although they all believe they do.

  • Anyhow it was truly exciting event to put folks from so many different churches together and let them try to practice their principles under those circumstances

  • @KatrinkaYobotz Don't flatter yourself by appropriating truth for everyone like you. Many individuals have found truth in many different religious faiths. To say that the way you were raised is the right one when I highly doubt you know anything in-depth about other religions is not only the height of ignorance, but the height of hatred as well. I wish mainstream Christianity involved more thinking. The most educated Christians I know respect people of all faiths.
