This rendition of the song doesn't do justice to the song's original meaning. Rufus clearly didn't understand the meaning behind the words. This song is supposed to be blissful, not melancholy. It has to do with Hindu philosophy. I understand that he may have taken a little artistic liberty with the song, and I do like the video a lot, but it just doesn't gel with the true meaning.

I disagree. This is Hindu, but it's also very Romantic-based. The song is predominately based on the interpretation of human condition through the senses, so in order to understand Rufus's artistic differences, pay attention to light. It's all on the girl- childhood innocence? The red balloon: again, same purpose of simplicity alluding to the famous French film. Just cause there are dark figures present doesn't necessarily entail a negative connotation. The chorus emphasizes this.

I remember being disappointed when I bought Rufus' version of the song after seeing the video, and then, some time later, realizing this is a "remix" of his own version, this one featuring strings. The strings really make it, I think.
