  • i enjoyed this vid

  • this makes no sense to me, but i like it

  • if u want one of these u better start learning programming bc they come just as they look..good luck!

  • Kuwait's right! Beautiful:) * Thanks

  • David Phipps, the genius behind STS9.

  • @superjay42 They're all geniuses in their own right, but I agree to an extent, Phipps is the backbone of the group.

  • @SecludedMemory Each member is certainly talented, sure. We could probably split hairs over which guy is the 'most' talented or 'the' genius, but there's not much to be gained from that. Suffice to say that Phipps has a bit of the unsung hero IMO - it's easy to see where Murph or Hunter or Zach contribute, but I think Phipps gets overlooked sometimes.

  • Sickest device out their!

  • anyone that knows about a internet site where i can buy this? i know it costs alot, but im still going to buy it;) please? anyone?

  • @zipproductionz Most of these are made custom by people, but your best bet with this is not online, or doing it cheaply, it's speaking to someone in a studio, try somewhere local, like asking the manager of a music shop if he knows anyone or anywhere selling one or with info on where to get one from

  • @zipproductionz Novation Launchpad

  • @Jaffsickle I cant find it there:O Anyways, do you know if it works for FL studio?=)

  • @zipproductionz Your comment is old but even still, your best bet is Monome dot org. that is where the majority of these are purchased and traded; between monome users who are either upgrading to larger sizes or just for other reasons. All of which (I would say) are very honest, helpful people. I bought mine through the community forums there.

  • Or you could just use a DAW and then save your song after you make it...

  • HOW DOES THIS THING WORK? do you previously make sounds, beats etc. and assign them certain keys? an explanation would be appreciated

  • @cassedy It isn't as complicated as it looks. It does however require some homework before use. It is not a plug-and-play type of device. What you said is correct, but its not limited to that. You can program your monome to do whatever you want it to. The code is open source and most people just program it themselves, there are however programs on the website which people have shared. Go to monome dot org and look around the forums for info. There is a beginners guide.

  • @cassedy Short answer: it's a controller. Yes, you make everything (beats, synth lines, etc.) before hand. In this case, he's able to control where the sample starts looping from based on where he presses a button.

That's just one function of the monome though; as others have said, the beauty of it is in its versatility. It could be used just to play loops. Or to play Tetris. Or as a piano keyboard (ish). Or anything else. Only limit is what you're willing to try & do with it. And your budget.

  • Leaky air at 2:10 haha wtf.

  • ive watched this video several times. and i still only somewhat understand this thing.

i don't own one and ive never messed around with one, so to me, this thing makes almost no sense lol

  • where do you get the sounds for it? or do you just make your own???

  • i can play with mine for hours.

  • what the fuck is this!?

  • Хороший девайз!!! Оч нужная вещичка!!! +1

  • I love the monome awesome tune just wish they would produce a few more at a time!

  • haha. salad fingers samples! :D coool dude

  • I want to buy a Monome, learn how to play it, get "Best New Artist" and take over the world. :)

  • what applications/plugins are you using on your monome?

  • dig

  • yeah murph has cancer hes not on heroine

  • Cool

  • where are my tissues again?

  • Pro! These things are what made Strobe - Deadmau5 happen!

  • Soo.. does this thing plug into Fruity Loops/ Ableton? and you just bind the sounds from the computer onto the Monome? Like a beat pad.

  • @joerover22 It's a little more complicated than that. The Monome uses OSC, which must be run through another program and turned into MIDI commands if you want to use it in Ableton.

  • @forgottencitizen deadmau5 had that same problem apprently

  • ... Ummm could you be my monome teacher!?

  • i need one of those. how much?

  • it reminds me of a tenori-on

  • HOT

  • wow its sound so much like some random Donkey Kong Coutry series soundtrack

  • sound tribe SUCKS ASS... BUNCH OF SELL OUTS .

You people would know what I mean if you knew where I'm coming from

  • @agrav19 Where exactly? A three week molly binge?

  • @sduffey40 Deadmau5 makes that shit rock!

  • @sduffey40 i take molly, well, my ex stacy, on dates almost everyday now

  • @vaughn8D way to kill your seratonin levels longterm scarlet brohansen

  • @agrav19 Yeah, where the fuck are you coming from? Have you even seen the Tribe?

  • @agrav19

they arent sell outs, the music they create has matured alongside them. some of the shit they release might not be the best, but the shows they put on are frequently top notch. very few bands will ever match them composition wise. minus peaceblaster. that shit sucked.

  • @kylekillsit im pretty sure they run $700-$800

    w w w (dot) monome (dot) O R G

  • @kylekillsit They stopped doing two set shows, their songs stopped peaking, and have you seen Murph develop over the past 6 years? He looks like he's doing heroin. They may not have sold out, but they seriously have lost touch with their music. Sound Tribe makes me depressed, they used to be the awesome band and now it's lie they don't even care.

  • @Getoutofmyroom1

    Murph has cancer.

  • This song would be very good for an trailer.

For example: A person in a forest running and than fighting scenes in which heavy artillery is being moved.

  • man dude where can i get one of those? that looks like a bunch of fun to play around with and just make music

  • so...like... where can i download this song?

  • sounds....so.......(i died)

  • what is the monone app you used here? if it's mlr, it seems a bit different then the one I use

  • thank for this music

  • the matrix

  • @DJPeteJames the track is be nice by sts9, its a different version a more simple one but look up be nice and you can get the track

  • how do you use it... looks complicated...

  • @DJPeteJames sound tribe sector nine

  • sound tribe sector nine

    dope shit...

  • Sigh... 500 dollars for a 6x6 one :(

  • @Cursesxx That's not even close to what you'd pay for a high-end guitar or keyboard.

  • @vitanovagypsy they are amazing live, period, they are the best, of all.

  • dude, I had this guys brother as a teacher for AP environmental science in 11th grade. ps. this instrument is nutz

  • STS9 is the band, be nice is the track

  • STS9 wrote this song homie, i'm drawing a blank on the track name

  • @DJPeteJames its by the band hes in STS9 its called be-nice (read the description)

  • @DJPeteJames "Be Nice" by Sound Tribe Sector 9

  • @DJPeteJames "Be Nice" by Sound Tribe Sector 9

  • "Be Nice" by Sound Tribe Sector 9

  • so i looked it up and this does nothing, so u were to make it do do something what could it do ?

  • Fake. The sequencer sounds good, but the keyboard has nothing to do with it.

  • @verymaddog keyboard? clarify please. What exactly is fake?

  • @verymaddog are you saying this is pre-recorded? cause if so you've got some homework to do before we talk about how epic the monome is.

  • You could walk on water with shit like this.

  • @V19torrent ...David Phipps and the whole STS9 crew already do.

  • no matter how many times i read stuff and watch videos on this, i dont really get what it is. but i saw deadmau5 use it live and (im gonna take a guess here) is it kinda like cue point buttons for the song(s)? or am i way off? sorry.

  • @RollyU It can be anything you want it to be really. Just a midi controller. Phipps is using it as a sequencer but you can use it to trigger stuff, use it as a synth, manipulate, sample, literally the possibilities are endless with this thing. I love it!

  • @RollyU well you're actually pretty close. it's basically whatever you want it to be. ya see, when you receive your monome, it's just a box with buttons and a usb cable. it comes with NO SOFTWARE! there is however open source software available. basically, you program it to be whatever you want it to be. each button could be a sequence, a sample or even a single note. possibilities... the monome has them

  • @DJPeteJames sound tribe sector 9

  • phipps should totally use that shit for live performances!, i wonder if he does any of that for their pa sets....

  • can you imagine this hooked to a pacemaker, then to a mac OS X with a harmon cardon stereo, and bose surround sound, "pinch myself"

  • @DJPeteJames

    STS9

  • its by sts9, the guy who made this is a member of that band, he just divided the song into samples and played it back on this

  • @DJPeteJames STS9 (Sound tribe sector 9) check them out they are one of my favorites.

  • Its the intro to "Be Nice" by STS9. STS9 is a band that you should explore thoroughly if you like that sounds of this :-) You will not regret it! I guess Phipps, STS9's keyboard player, built this lovely little contraption :-). I know this is 7 months later haha, but i hope it helps.

  • So this is for people that make music and it sets beats and what not? Just makin sure....

  • there are some many buttons to press.how o they noe which sound is which?.

  • Do a version of the rabble!

  • STS9!!! ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!

  • so basically you would have to memorize what each button is mapped for? i dont know alot about monome's and such so anything useful would be great

  • @jackpisom monomes dont do anything specific you personally map out as many or as few of the buttons as you want to do whatever you want, sample, sequence, ect. brilliant in its simplicity, elegant in its complexity.

  • @DJPeteJames the track is sound tribe sector nine...they are quite the band.

  • @DJPeteJames STS9 - Be Nice

  • i want one of these!

  • @DJPeteJames "be nice" by STS9

  • Wow... how on earth does this work? awesome. =)

  • @Crazee108 rows are samples. You can 'jump' into a position in the sample by pressing a button inside that row. Pretty easy, but hard to make somehing sound good (i know, haha)

  • what software is it controlling????

  • @supadupa555 Usually Max/Msp.

  • Hey does anyone know of a vst version of this kinda thing?

  • i want this!

  • does he us this in their "Live PA" shows?

  • I really enjoyed this. Thanks. What software is it controlling?

  • @junglehead99 Ussually Max/Msp.

  • what program does it run on

  • what is this?

  • how do you remember all the loops and sounds on each button? seems like a lot of memory work to me. Is this like a larger scale of the MPC?

  • nah not like an mpc this right here is more of an arranging um trigger. lets you decided what parts of a song to play (at least when using it like this) the left to right flashes are step sequencer notes. it's not to difficult if you understand what your looking at.

  • used in conjuction with custom programs or daws and sometimes both. More like a daw controller, a really modular and awesome clip launcher of sorts

  • so its a slicer?

  • cool seeing it done like that, you really can't compare to a live show though. Their live recordings are generally way better than studio and seeing it with their light show and what not is insanity

  • I think the beginning sounds really really good. The beat could use a little work though.

  • so basically, the monome is a bit like a step sequencer, but you can interfer with the steps like in ableton with clips set on follow up....am i right about that?

  • @zab666 @flux302 Monome can be whatever you want. It does not not do anything interesting itself. Everything is in software which is usually Max/Msp and you can load any patch or create your own patches. monome is just a box with buttons and leds. :)

  • this is f*cking brilliant. a great machine and a truly great track. well done and then some

  • how does one make these pieces of equip.?

  • i like APC40 much more...

    APC40 4 Life

  • nice gerät...

  • i buy it.>!

  • Soo sick love that song... So when STS9 plays this live do they not play the guitar at all is it all electronic?

  • Nah they're a five piece electro-jam band: bass, guitar, keys (David Phipps), drums and then also a percussion/bongo player. they have synths that they play but that's for electronic sounds. What sounds instrumental is played live. Look up their New Years Eve runs or shows at the Red Rocks. I love them

  • Yeaa i'd hope it would make their shows ten times better.. They do have alot of electronic in their music though. I'm seein them for first time in a couple months though.. One of few bands i havent seen that i listen too often

  • Oh sweet man! You'll have an amazing time i'm sure

  • @tjc5152 They are amazing, all of what you hear in their studio recordings is played live on stage, with huge ornamentation. Tribe shows are an experience to be had.

  • Yea i never listen to their studio recordings just download shows off archive... Jam bands studio dont give justice.. What I like bout sound tribe is it gives me a spirtual, spacey vibe often can't wait to see them.

  • anyone know any good monomers?

  • you mean ppl that play the Monome? If so, do a youtube search for "daedelus halloween"

  • no, they only use the monome for the electronic sounds. they play the guitar, drums, and other instruments with it.

  • @rcsfeaau all of them

  • awesome !!!!!!!!1

  • WTF???????

  • this just changed my perspective on how they created music. awesome. just awesome

  • Amazing

  • sound tribe ftw

  • nice :)

  • I love it too! @broken = ass

  • This track is sooooooooooooo dope. Love it. God I wish I had the money for one of these!

  • David Phipps, he plays keyboards for STS9. track is Be Nice

    glad you dig it !

  • fkn mad thingamagiggo

  • your a crap person...that song is fuckin so dope

  • hey nobhead i dont you you makin the kinda money sts9 does. keep your unwanted comments to yourself anways

  • why dont you wait till you can speak some normal english before you start leaving your comments- anyway, its obvious you just want to suck sts9`s cock

  • how much does that thing cost? the 8X16 monome.

  • $1400 plus shipping (northamerica $26, international $110)

  • I can hear the future!!!!

  • I can hear it tooo!

  • I've seen Jesus's instrument and .......... I WANT IT

  • phipps is the shitt....be nice is fucking dirty

  • fucking amazing!! be nice is a great song too

  • transition at 1:55 is so dope

  • is this device digital or analogue?

  • The device by itself does almost nothing... it's basically just a large series of buttons. The things it's hooked up to are what produce the sound.

  • a car a lump of metal without petrol

  • moreeeeee more moere moreeeeee

    5*****

  • fucking crucial.

  • i miss saxton already.

  • you're the man phipps, bring back sax, seriously...

  • phipps is so sick with. RAGE ON SECTOR 9!!!! BRING BACK SAX

  • that is so cool!! and nice beat

  • you just like blew my mind dude!!!!!

  • good job

  • that's awesome. :D

  • i dont understand these things, people do amazing things with them, but how do you use them? i know you can plug in the vst to ableton or something... but do yohave to pre-program every button for a different sound? its so confusing lol

  • Ya its crazy you take a loop, say it is 16 beats long, so each beat gets a blink and you chop it up and set ableton to scroll through the 16 clips which make up one drum beat.. then you do it for all your clips and you have that basic loop that scrolls by

  • lets just leave it at awesome.

  • This is just amazing to me. I just saw sts9 and pretty lights at Rothbury and i have no clue how any of this works but the sound is unmistakeable

  • P H A T

  • So does Phipps just play this at live shows or what?

  • no he does a lot with keyboards

  • never.

  • hmmm lovley but expensive might build a 128 with arduino

  • this is sick!!!!!

  • Nice sound!

Does Tangerine Dream use this machine?

  • Awesome. Thanks for the post!

  • awesome =)
